1 Or Achab avait soixante-dix fils à Samarie. Jéhu écrivit des lettres et les envoya à Samarie, aux chefs de Jizreel, aux anciens, et à ceux qui avaient élevé les fils d'Achab, en disant:
Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the rulers of Jezreel, even the elders, and unto them that brought up [the sons of] Ahab, saying,
2 « Maintenant, dès que cette lettre vous parviendra, puisque les fils de votre maître sont avec vous, et que vous avez des chars et des chevaux, une ville fortifiée et des armes,
And now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your master’s sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, a fortified city also, and armor;
3 choisissez le meilleur et le plus apte des fils de votre maître, mettez-le sur le trône de son père, et combattez pour la maison de votre maître. »
look ye out the best and meetest of your master’s sons, and set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.
4 Mais ils eurent très peur et dirent: « Voici, les deux rois ne se sont pas tenus devant lui! Comment allons-nous donc nous tenir debout? »
But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, Behold, the two kings stood not before him: how then shall we stand?
5 Celui qui était à la tête de la maison, celui qui était à la tête de la ville, les anciens aussi, et ceux qui élevaient les enfants, envoyèrent dire à Jéhu: « Nous sommes tes serviteurs, et nous ferons tout ce que tu nous demanderas. Nous ne ferons pas de roi un autre homme. Fais ce qui est bon à tes yeux. »
And he that was over the household, and he that was over the city, the elders also, and they that brought up [the children], sent to Jehu, saying, We are thy servants, and will do all that thou shalt bid us; we will not make any man king: do thou that which is good in thine eyes.
6 Puis il leur écrivit une seconde fois une lettre dans laquelle il disait: « Si vous êtes de mon côté, et si vous écoutez ma voix, prenez les têtes des hommes qui sont les fils de vos maîtres, et venez me voir à Jizreel demain à cette heure-ci. » Or les fils du roi, au nombre de soixante-dix personnes, étaient avec les grands de la ville, qui les firent monter.
Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be on my side, and if ye will hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master’s sons, and come to me to Jezreel by to-morrow this time. Now the king’s sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who brought them up.
7 Lorsque la lettre leur parvint, ils prirent les fils du roi, les tuèrent, soit soixante-dix personnes, mirent leurs têtes dans des paniers, et les envoyèrent à Jizreel.
And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king’s sons, and slew them, even seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them unto him to Jezreel.
8 Un messager vint lui dire: « On a apporté les têtes des fils du roi. » Il dit: « Disposez-les en deux tas à l'entrée de la porte jusqu'au matin. »
And there came a messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king’s sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning.
9 Au matin, il sortit, se tint debout, et dit à tout le peuple: « Vous êtes justes. Voici, j'ai conspiré contre mon maître et je l'ai tué, mais qui a tué tous ceux-là?
And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye are righteous: behold, I conspired against my master, and slew him; but who smote all these?
10 Sachez maintenant que rien ne tombera à terre de la parole de l'Éternel, que l'Éternel a prononcée sur la maison d'Achab. Car Yahvé a accompli ce qu'il avait annoncé par son serviteur Élie. »
Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of Jehovah, which Jehovah spake concerning the house of Ahab: for Jehovah hath done that which he spake by his servant Elijah.
11 Et Jéhu frappa tout ce qui restait de la maison d'Achab à Jizreel, avec tous ses grands, ses familiers et ses prêtres, jusqu'à ce qu'il ne lui restât plus personne.
So Jehu smote all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his familiar friends, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.
12 Il se leva, partit, et se rendit à Samarie. Comme il se trouvait en chemin dans la bergerie des bergers,
And he arose and departed, and went to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing-house of the shepherds in the way,
13 Jéhu rencontra les frères d'Achazia, roi de Juda, et dit: « Qui êtes-vous? » Ils répondirent: « Nous sommes les frères d'Achazia. Nous descendons saluer les enfants du roi et les enfants de la reine. »
Jehu met with the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of Ahaziah: and we go down to salute the children of the king and the children of the queen.
14 Il a dit: « Prenez-les vivants! » Ils les prirent vivants, et les tuèrent à la fosse de la tondeuse, même quarante-deux hommes. Il n'en a laissé aucun.
And he said, Take them alive. And they took them alive, and slew them at the pit of the shearing-house, even two and forty men; neither left he any of them.
15 Comme il était parti de là, il rencontra Jehonadab, fils de Rechab, qui venait à sa rencontre. Il le salua, et lui dit: « Ton cœur est-il droit, comme mon cœur est avec ton cœur? » Jehonadab a répondu: « C'est vrai. » « Si c'est le cas, donne-moi ta main. » Il lui donna sa main, et il le fit monter vers lui dans le char.
And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him; and he saluted him, and said to him, Is thy heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thy hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot.
16 Il dit: « Viens avec moi, et vois mon zèle pour Yahvé. » Et ils le firent monter dans son char.
And he said, Come with me, and see my zeal for Jehovah. So they made him ride in his chariot.
17 Lorsqu'il arriva à Samarie, il frappa tous ceux qui restaient à Achab à Samarie, jusqu'à ce qu'il les eût détruits, selon la parole de l'Éternel qu'il avait adressée à Élie.
And when he came to Samaria, he smote all that remained unto Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed him, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake to Elijah.
18 Jéhu rassembla tout le peuple et leur dit: « Achab a un peu servi Baal, mais Jéhu le servira beaucoup.
And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu will serve him much.
19 Maintenant, appelez-moi tous les prophètes de Baal, tous ses adorateurs et tous ses prêtres. Que personne ne soit absent, car j'ai un grand sacrifice à offrir à Baal. Celui qui sera absent ne vivra pas. » Mais Jéhu agit de manière trompeuse, avec l'intention de détruire les adorateurs de Baal.
Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshippers, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice [to do] to Baal; whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtlety, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal.
20 Jéhu a dit: « Sanctifiez une assemblée solennelle pour Baal! » Et ils le proclamèrent.
And Jehu said, Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed it.
21 Jéhu envoya par tout Israël; et tous les adorateurs de Baal vinrent, de sorte qu'il ne resta pas un homme qui ne vint pas. Ils entrèrent dans la maison de Baal, et la maison de Baal fut remplie d'un bout à l'autre.
And Jehu sent through all Israel: and all the worshippers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left that came not. And they came into the house of Baal; and the house of Baal was filled from one end to another.
22 Il dit à celui qui gardait l'armoire: « Sortez des robes pour tous les adorateurs de Baal! ». Il leur apporta donc des robes.
And he said unto him that was over the vestry, Bring forth vestments for all the worshippers of Baal. And he brought them forth vestments.
23 Jéhu entra avec Jéhonadab, fils de Réchab, dans la maison de Baal. Il dit alors aux adorateurs de Baal: « Cherchez, et voyez qu'il n'y a ici avec vous aucun des serviteurs de Yahvé, mais seulement les adorateurs de Baal. »
And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal; and he said unto the worshippers of Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of Jehovah, but the worshippers of Baal only.
24 Et ils entrèrent pour offrir des sacrifices et des holocaustes. Or Jéhu s'était désigné quatre-vingts hommes à l'extérieur, et il avait dit: « Si l'un des hommes que je livre entre tes mains s'échappe, celui qui le laissera partir en aura pour sa vie. »
And they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt-offerings. Now Jehu had appointed him fourscore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I bring into your hands escape, [he that letteth him go], his life shall be for the life of him.
25 Dès qu'il eut fini d'offrir l'holocauste, Jéhu dit à la garde et aux chefs: « Entrez et tuez-les! Que personne n'échappe. » Ils les frappèrent donc du tranchant de l'épée. La garde et les chefs jetèrent les cadavres dehors et allèrent dans le sanctuaire intérieur de la maison de Baal.
And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt-offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal.
26 Ils sortirent les colonnes qui étaient dans la maison de Baal et les brûlèrent.
And they brought forth the pillars that were in the house of Baal, and burned them.
27 Ils démolirent la colonne de Baal, ils démolirent la maison de Baal, et ils en firent une latrine, jusqu'à ce jour.
And they brake down the pillar of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught-house, unto this day.
28 Ainsi Jéhu détruisit Baal hors d'Israël.
Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.
29 Cependant, Jéhu ne se détourna pas des péchés de Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, par lesquels il avait fait pécher Israël, à savoir les veaux d'or qui étaient à Béthel et ceux qui étaient à Dan.
Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, [to wit], the golden calves that were in Beth-el, and that were in Dan.
30 Yahvé dit à Jéhu: « Parce que tu as bien exécuté ce qui est juste à mes yeux, et que tu as fait à la maison d'Achab tout ce qui était dans mon cœur, tes descendants s'assiéront sur le trône d'Israël jusqu'à la quatrième génération. »
And Jehovah said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, [and] hast done unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, thy sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.
31 Mais Jéhu ne prit pas garde de marcher de tout son cœur dans la loi de Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël. Il ne s'est pas détourné des péchés de Jéroboam, par lesquels il avait fait pécher Israël.
But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of Jehovah, the God of Israel, with all his heart: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, wherewith he made Israel to sin.
32 En ces jours-là, l'Éternel commença à retrancher des parties d'Israël, et Hazaël les frappa dans tout le territoire d'Israël
In those days Jehovah began to cut off from Israel: and Hazael smote them in all the borders of Israel;
33 depuis le Jourdain vers l'orient, tout le pays de Galaad, les Gadites, les Rubénites et les Manassites, depuis Aroër, qui est près du torrent de l'Arnon, jusqu'à Galaad et Basan.
from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the valley of the Arnon, even Gilead and Bashan.
34 Et le reste des actes de Jéhu, et tout ce qu'il a fait, et toute sa puissance, n'est-ce pas écrit dans le livre des chroniques des rois d'Israël?
Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
35 Jéhu se coucha avec ses pères, et on l'enterra à Samarie. Joachaz, son fils, régna à sa place.
And Jehu slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead.
36 Le temps que Jéhu régna sur Israël à Samarie fut de vingt-huit ans.
And the time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty and eight years.
