1 Samuel 27

1 David disait en son cœur: « Je vais maintenant périr un jour par la main de Saül. Il n'y a rien de mieux pour moi que de m'échapper dans le pays des Philistins; et Saül désespérera de moi, pour me chercher encore dans tout le territoire d'Israël. Je m'échapperai donc de sa main. »

And David said in his heart: 'I shall now be swept away one day by the hand of Saul; there is nothing better for me than that I should escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me any more in all the borders of Israel; so shall I escape out of his hand.'

2 David se leva et passa, lui et les six cents hommes qui étaient avec lui, chez Akish, fils de Maoch, roi de Gath.

And David arose, and passed over, he and the six hundred men that were with him, unto Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

3 David habitait avec Akish à Gath, lui et ses hommes, chacun avec sa maison, même David avec ses deux femmes, Ahinoam la Jizreelite et Abigaïl la Carmélite, femme de Nabal.

And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal's wife.

4 Saül apprit que David s'était enfui à Gath, et il cessa de le chercher.

And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath; and he sought no more again for him.

5 David dit à Akish: « Si maintenant j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, qu'on me donne une place dans une des villes du pays, pour que j'y demeure. Car pourquoi ton serviteur devrait-il habiter avec toi dans la ville royale? »

And David said unto Achish: 'If now I have found favour in thine eyes, let them give me a place in one of the cities in the country, that I may dwell there; for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?'

6 Et Akish lui donna Ziklag ce jour-là: c'est pourquoi Ziklag appartient aux rois de Juda jusqu'à ce jour.

Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day; wherefore Ziklag belongeth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.

7 Le nombre de jours que David vécut dans le pays des Philistins fut d'une année entière et de quatre mois.

And the number of the days that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.

8 David et ses hommes montèrent et attaquèrent les Gueshuriens, les Girziens et les Amalécites, car c'étaient les habitants du pays d'autrefois, sur le chemin de Shur, jusqu'au pays d'Égypte.

And David and his men went up, and made a raid upon the Geshurites, and the Gizrites, and the Amalekites; for those were the inhabitants of the land, who were of old, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.

9 David frappa le pays, ne sauva ni homme ni femme en vie, et prit les brebis, les bœufs, les ânes, les chameaux et les vêtements. Il s'en retourna, et arriva chez Akish.

And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel. And he returned, and came to Achish.

10 Akish dit: « Contre qui as-tu fait un raid aujourd'hui? » David répondit: « Contre le midi de Juda, contre le midi des Jerahmeelites, et contre le midi des Kenites. »

And Achish said: 'Whither have ye made a raid to-day?' And David said: 'Against the South of Judah, and against the South of the Jerahmeelites, and against the South of the Kenites.'

11 David ne sauva ni homme ni femme en vie pour les amener à Gath, en disant: « De peur qu'on ne raconte à notre sujet: « David a fait cela, et c'est ainsi qu'il a agi tout le temps qu'il a vécu au pays des Philistins ». »

And David left neither man nor woman alive, to bring them to Gath, saying: 'Lest they should tell on us, saying: So did David, and so hath been his manner all the while he hath dwelt in the country of the Philistines.'

12 Akish crut David, en disant: « Il a rendu son peuple d'Israël complètement odieux. C'est pourquoi il sera mon serviteur pour toujours. »

And Achish believed David, saying: 'He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.'
