1 Hiram, roi de Tyr, envoya ses serviteurs vers Salomon, car il avait appris qu'on l'avait oint comme roi à la place de son père, et Hiram avait toujours aimé David.
And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the place of his father; for Hiram always loved David.
2 Salomon envoya dire à Hiram:
And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,
3 « Tu sais que David, mon père, n'a pu bâtir une maison au nom de l'Éternel, son Dieu, à cause des guerres qui l'ont entouré de toutes parts, jusqu'à ce que l'Éternel ait mis ses ennemis sous la plante de ses pieds.
Thou knowest that David my father could not build a house unto the name of Jehovah his God, because of the wars which were about him on every side, until Jehovah put them under the soles of his feet.
4 Mais maintenant, l'Éternel, mon Dieu, m'a donné du repos de tous côtés. Il n'y a plus d'ennemi ni d'événement mauvais.
But now Jehovah my God has given me rest on every side: there is neither adversary nor evil event.
5 Voici, j'ai l'intention de bâtir une maison au nom de l'Éternel, mon Dieu, comme l'Éternel l'a dit à David, mon père: « Ton fils, que je mettrai à ta place sur ton trône, bâtira la maison de mon nom ».
And behold, I purpose to build a house unto the name of Jehovah my God, as Jehovah spoke to David my father saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy stead, he shall build a house unto my name.
6 Maintenant, ordonne que l'on coupe pour moi des cèdres du Liban. Mes serviteurs seront avec tes serviteurs, et je te donnerai un salaire pour tes serviteurs, selon tout ce que tu diras. Car vous savez qu'il n'y a personne parmi nous qui sache couper le bois comme les Sidoniens. »
And now command that they hew me cedar-trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants; and I will give thee hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt say; for thou knowest that there is not among us any that are experienced in cutting timber like to the Zidonians.
7 Lorsque Hiram entendit les paroles de Salomon, il se réjouit grandement et dit: « Béni soit aujourd'hui Yahvé, qui a donné à David un fils sage pour gouverner ce grand peuple. »
And it came to pass when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be Jehovah this day, who has given to David a wise son over this great people.
8 Hiram envoya dire à Salomon: « J'ai entendu le message que tu m'as envoyé. Je ferai tout ce que tu désires en ce qui concerne le bois de cèdre et le bois de cyprès.
And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have heard the things which thou sentest to me for: I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of cypress.
9 Mes serviteurs les feront descendre du Liban jusqu'à la mer. Je les transformerai en radeaux pour qu'ils aillent par mer jusqu'au lieu que tu m'auras indiqué, je les ferai briser là et tu les recevras. Tu accompliras mon désir, en donnant de la nourriture à ma famille. »
My servants shall bring [them] down from Lebanon to the sea; and I will convey them by sea [in] rafts to the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be broken up there, and thou shalt receive them. And thou shalt accomplish my desire in giving food for my household.
10 Hiram donna à Salomon du bois de cèdre et du bois de cyprès, selon tout son désir.
So Hiram gave Solomon cedar-trees and cypress-trees [according to] all his desire.
11 Salomon donna à Hiram vingt mille cors de blé pour la nourriture de sa maison, et vingt cors d'huile pure. Salomon donna cela à Hiram année par année.
And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat as food for his household, and twenty measures of beaten oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.
12 Yahvé donna à Salomon de la sagesse, comme il le lui avait promis. La paix régna entre Hiram et Salomon, et tous deux conclurent un traité ensemble.
And Jehovah gave Solomon wisdom as he promised him. And there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league.
13 Le roi Salomon leva une levée sur tout Israël, et la levée fut de trente mille hommes.
And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty thousand men.
14 Il les envoya au Liban, à raison de dix mille par mois par cours: un mois ils étaient au Liban, et deux mois à la maison; et Adoniram était à la tête des hommes soumis au travail forcé.
And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses; a month they were in Lebanon, two months at home; and Adoniram was over the levy.
15 Salomon avait soixante-dix mille personnes qui portaient des fardeaux, et quatre-vingt mille qui taillaient des pierres dans les montagnes,
And Solomon had seventy thousand that bore burdens, and eighty thousand stone-masons in the mountains;
16 sans compter les chefs de Salomon qui étaient chargés de l'ouvrage: trois mille trois cents qui dirigeaient le peuple qui travaillait à l'ouvrage.
besides the overseers whom Solomon had set over the work, three thousand three hundred, who ruled over the people that wrought in the work.
17 Le roi donna des ordres, et l'on tailla de grosses pierres, des pierres de prix, pour poser les fondements de la maison avec des pierres travaillées.
And the king commanded, and they brought great stones, costly stones, hewn stones, to lay the foundation of the house.
18 Les bâtisseursde Salomon, les bâtisseurs de Hiram et les Gébalites les taillèrent et préparèrent le bois et les pierres pour construire la maison.
And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders and the Giblites hewed them, and prepared timber and stones to build the house.
