1 Minä olen se mies, joka olen kurjuutta nähnyt hänen vihastuksensa vitsan alla.
ALEPH. I am the man that sees poverty, through the rod of his wrath upon me.
2 Minut hän on johdattanut ja kuljettanut pimeyteen eikä valkeuteen.
He has taken me, and led me away into darkness, and not [into] light.
3 Juuri minua vastaan hän kääntää kätensä, yhäti, kaiken päivää.
Nay, against me has he turned his hand all the day.
4 Hän on kalvanut minun lihani ja nahkani, musertanut minun luuni.
He has made old my flesh and my skin; he has broken my bones.
5 Hän on rakentanut varustukset minua vastaan ja piirittänyt minut myrkyllä ja vaivalla.
BETH. He has built against me, and compassed my head, and brought travail [upon me].
6 Hän on pannut minut asumaan pimeydessä niinkuin ikiaikojen kuolleet.
He has set me in dark places, as them that have long been dead.
7 Hän on tehnyt muurin minun ympärilleni, niin etten pääse ulos, on pannut minut raskaisiin vaskikahleisiin.
He has builded against me, and I can’t come forth: he has made my brazen [chain] heavy.
8 Vaikka minä huudan ja parun, hän vaientaa minun rukoukseni.
GIMEL. Yes, [though] I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayer.
9 Hakatuista kivistä hän on tehnyt minun teilleni muurin, on mutkistanut minun polkuni.
DALETH. He has built up my ways, he has hedged my paths;
10 Vaaniva karhu on hän minulle, piilossa väijyvä leijona.
he has troubled me, [as] a she-bear lying in wait: he is to me [as] a lion in secret places.
11 Hän on vienyt harhaan minun tieni ja repinyt minut kappaleiksi, hän on minut autioksi tehnyt.
He pursued [me] after I departed, and brought me to a stand: he has utterly ruined me.
12 Hän on jännittänyt jousensa ja asettanut minut nuoltensa maalitauluksi.
HE. He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
13 Hän on ampunut munuaisiini nuolet, viinensä lapset.
He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
14 Minä olen joutunut koko kansani nauruksi, heidän jokapäiväiseksi pilkkalauluksensa.
I became a laughing stock to all my people; and their song all the day.
15 Hän on ravinnut minua katkeruudella, juottanut minua koiruoholla.
VAU. He has filled me with bitterness, he has drenched me with gall.
16 Hän on purettanut minulla hampaat rikki soraan, painanut minut alas tomuun.
And he has dashed out my teeth with gravel, he has fed me with ashes.
17 Sinä olet syössyt minun sieluni ulos, rauhasta pois, minä olen unhottanut onnen.
He has also removed my soul from peace: I forgot prosperity.
18 Ja minä sanon: mennyt on minulta kunnia ja Herran odotus.
Therefore my success has perished, and my hope from the Lord.
19 Muista minun kurjuuttani ja kodittomuuttani, koiruohoa ja myrkkyä.
ZAIN. I remembered by reason of my poverty, and because of persecution my bitterness and gall shall be remembered;
20 Sinä kyllä muistat sen, että minun sieluni on alaspainettu.
and my soul shall meditate with me.
21 Tämän minä painan sydämeeni, sentähden minä toivon.
This will I lay up in my heart, therefore I will endure.
22 Herran armoa on, ettemme ole aivan hävinneet, sillä hänen laupeutensa ei ole loppunut:
HETH. [It is] the mercies of the Lord, that he has not failed me, because his compassions are not exhausted. Pity [us], O Lord, early [every] month: for we are not brought to an end, because his compassions are not exhausted.
23 se on joka aamu uusi, ja suuri on hänen uskollisuutensa.
[They are] new every morning: great is your faithfulness.
24 Minun osani on Herra, sanoo minun sieluni; sentähden minä panen toivoni häneen.
The Lord is my portion, says my soul; therefore will I wait for him.
25 Hyvä on Herra häntä odottaville, sille sielulle, joka häntä etsii.
TETH. The Lord is good to them that wait for him: the soul which shall seek him
26 Hyvä on hiljaisuudessa toivoa Herran apua.
[is] good, and shall wait for, and quietly expect salvation of the Lord.
27 Hyvä on miehelle, että hän kantaa iestä nuoruudessaan.
TETH. [It is] good for a man when he bears a yoke in his youth.
28 Istukoon hän yksin ja hiljaa, kun Herra on sen hänen päällensä pannut.
He will sit alone, and be silent, because he has borne [it] upon him.
29 Laskekoon suunsa tomuun-ehkä on vielä toivoa.
30 Ojentakoon hän posken sille, joka häntä lyö, saakoon kyllälti häväistystä.
JOD. He will give [his] cheek to him that smites him: he will be filled full with reproaches.
31 Sillä ei Herra hylkää iankaikkisesti;
For the Lord will not reject for ever.
32 vaan jos hän on murheelliseksi saattanut, hän osoittaa laupeutta suuressa armossansa.
CHAPH. For he that has brought down will pity, and [that] according to the abundance of his mercy.
33 Sillä ei hän sydämensä halusta vaivaa eikä murehduta ihmislapsia.
He has not answered [in anger] from his heart, though he has brought low the children of a man.
34 Kun jalkojen alle poljetaan kaikki vangit maassa,
LAMED. To bring down under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,
35 kun väännetään miehen oikeutta Korkeimman kasvojen edessä,
to turn aside the judgment of a man before the face of the Most High,
36 kun ihmiselle tehdään vääryyttä hänen riita-asiassaan-eikö Herra sitä näkisi?
to condemn a man [unjustly] in his judgment, the Lord has not given commandment.
37 Onko kukaan sanonut, ja se on tapahtunut, jos ei Herra ole käskenyt?
Who has thus spoken, and it has come to pass? the Lord has not commanded it.
38 Eikö lähde Korkeimman suusta paha ja hyvä?
Out of the mouth of the Most High there shall not come forth evil and good.
39 Miksi tuskittelee ihminen eläessään, mies syntiensä palkkaa?
MEM. Why should a living man complain, a man concerning his sin?
40 Koetelkaamme teitämme, tutkikaamme niitä ja palatkaamme Herran tykö.
NUN. Our way has been searched out and examined, and we will turn to the Lord.
41 Kohottakaamme sydämemme ynnä kätemme Jumalan puoleen, joka on taivaassa.
Let us lift up our hearts with [our] hand to the lofty One in heaven.
42 Me olemme luopuneet pois ja olleet kapinalliset; sinä et ole antanut anteeksi,
We have sinned, we have transgressed; and you have not pardoned.
43 olet peittänyt itsesi vihassasi, ajanut meitä takaa, surmannut säälimättä;
SAMECH. You has visited [us] in wrath, and driven us away: you has slain, you has not pitied.
44 olet peittänyt itsesi pilvellä, niin ettei rukous pääse lävitse.
You have veiled yourself with a cloud because of prayer, that I might be blind,
45 Tunkioksi ja hylyksi sinä olet meidät tehnyt kansojen seassa.
and be cast off. AIN. You have set us [alone] in the midst of the nations.
46 Suut ammollaan meitä vastaan ovat kaikki meidän vihamiehemme.
All our enemies have opened their mouth against us.
47 Osaksemme on tullut kauhu ja kuoppa, turmio ja sortuminen.
Fear and wrath are come upon us, suspense and destruction.
48 Vesipurot juoksevat minun silmistäni tyttären, minun kansani, sortumisen tähden.
Mine eye shall pour down torrents of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49 Minun silmäni vuotaa lakkaamatta, hellittämättä
PHE. Mine eye is drowned [with tears], and I will not be silent, so that there shall be no rest,
50 siihen asti, kunnes katsoo, kunnes näkee Herra taivaasta.
until the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.
51 Silmäni tuottaa tuskaa minun sielulleni kaikkien minun kaupunkini tyttärien tähden.
Mine eye shall prey upon my soul, because of all the daughters of the city.
52 Kiihkeästi pyydystivät minua kuin lintua ne, jotka syyttä ovat vihamiehiäni.
TSADE. The fowlers chased me as a sparrow, all mine enemies destroyed my life in a pit without cause,
53 He sulkivat kuoppaan minun elämäni ja heittivät päälleni kiviä.
and laid a stone upon me.
54 Vedet tulvivat minun pääni ylitse; minä sanoin: olen hukassa.
Water flowed over my head: I said, I am cut off.
55 Minä huusin sinun nimeäsi, Herra, kuopan syvyydestä.
KOPH. I called upon your name, O Lord, out of the lowest dungeon.
56 Sinä kuulit minun huutoni: "Älä peitä korvaasi minun avunhuudoltani, että saisin hengähtää".
You heard my voice: close not your ears to my supplication.
57 Sinä olit läsnä silloin, kun minä sinua huusin; sinä sanoit: "Älä pelkää".
You drew near to my help: in the day wherein I called upon you you said to me, Fear not.
58 Sinä, Herra, ajoit minun riita-asiani, lunastit minun henkeni.
RECHS. O Lord, you has pleaded the causes of my soul; you has redeemed my life.
59 Olethan nähnyt, Herra, minun kärsimäni sorron: hanki minulle oikeus.
You have seen, O Lord, my troubles: you have judged my cause.
60 Olethan nähnyt kaiken heidän kostonhimonsa, kaikki heidän juonensa minua vastaan.
You have seen all their vengeance, [you have looked] on all their devices against me.
61 Sinä olet kuullut heidän häväistyksensä, Herra, kaikki heidän juonensa minua vastaan.
CHSEN. You have heard their reproach [and] all their devices against me;
62 Minun vastustajaini huulet ja heidän aikeensa ovat minua vastaan kaiken päivää.
the lips of them that rose up against me, and their plots against me all the day;
63 Istuivatpa he tai nousivat, katso: minä olen heillä pilkkalauluna.
their sitting down and their rising up: look you upon their eyes.
64 Kosta heille, Herra, heidän kättensä teot.
You will render them a recompense, O Lord, according to the works of their hands.
65 Paaduta heidän sydämensä, kohdatkoon heitä sinun kirouksesi.
THAU. You will give them [as] a covering, the grief of my heart.
66 Aja heitä takaa vihassasi ja hävitä heidät Herran taivaan alta.
You will persecute them in anger, and will consume them from under the heaven, O Lord.
