Nehemiah 13

1 On that day there was read in the book of Moses, in the ears of the people, and it hath been found written in it that an Ammonite and Moabite doth not come into the assembly of God — unto the age,

Ce jour-là, on lut dans le livre de Moïse, aux oreilles du peuple, et il s’y trouva écrit que l’Ammonite et le Moabite n’entreraient pas dans la congrégation de Dieu, à jamais,

2 because they have not come before the sons of Israel with bread and with water, and hire against them Balaam to revile them, and our God turneth the reviling into a blessing.

parce qu’ils n’étaient pas venus à la rencontre des fils d’Israël avec du pain et de l’eau, et qu’ils avaient loué contre eux [à prix d’argent] Balaam pour les maudire (mais notre Dieu changea la malédiction en bénédiction).

3 And it cometh to pass, at their hearing the law, that they separate all the mixed people from Israel.

Et il arriva que, lorsqu’ils eurent entendu la loi, ils séparèrent d’Israël tout le peuple mélangé.

4 And before this Eliashib the priest, appointed over chambers of the house of our God, [is] a relation of Tobiah,

Et avant cela, Éliashib, le sacrificateur, établi sur les chambres de la maison de notre Dieu, allié de Tobija,

5 and he maketh for him a great chamber, and there they were formerly putting the present, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithe of the corn, the new wine, and the oil — the commanded thing of the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers — and the heave-offering of the priests.

lui avait préparé une grande chambre; et précédemment on y mettait les offrandes de gâteau, l’encens, et les ustensiles, et les dîmes du blé, du moût et de l’huile, ce qui était ordonné pour les lévites et pour les chantres et les portiers, ainsi que l’offrande élevée des sacrificateurs.

6 And during all this I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty and second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon did I come unto the king, and at the end of days I have asked of the king,

Et pendant tout cela je n’étais pas à Jérusalem; car, la trente-deuxième année d’Artaxerxès, roi de Babylone, j’étais allé vers le roi; et au bout de quelque temps j’avais demandé au roi la permission de m’en aller.

7 and I come in to Jerusalem, and understand concerning the evil that Eliashib hath done for Tobiah, to make to him a chamber in the courts of the house of God,

Et je vins à Jérusalem, et je m’aperçus du mal qu’Éliashib avait fait en faveur de Tobija, en lui préparant une chambre dans les parvis de la maison de Dieu.

8 and it is very displeasing to me, and I cast all the vessels of the house of Tobiah without, out of the chamber,

Et je trouvai cela fort mauvais, et je jetai dehors, hors de la chambre, tous les effets de la maison de Tobija.

9 and I speak, and they cleanse the chambers, and I bring back thither the vessels of the house of God with the present and the frankincense.

Et je commandai qu’on purifie les chambres, et j’y fis rapporter les ustensiles de la maison de Dieu, l’offrande de gâteau et l’encens.

10 And I know that the portions of the Levites have not been given, and they flee each to his field — the Levites and the singers, doing the work.

Et j’appris que les portions des lévites ne leur avaient pas été données, et que les lévites et les chantres qui faisaient le service avaient fui chacun à son champ.

11 And I strive with the prefects, and say, 'Wherefore hath the house of God been forsaken?' and I gather them, and set them on their station;

Et je querellai les chefs, et je dis: Pourquoi la maison de Dieu est-elle abandonnée? Et je les rassemblai, et je les fis demeurer à leur poste.

12 and all Judah have brought in the tithe of the corn, and of the new wine, and of the oil, to the treasuries.

Et tout Juda apporta dans les magasins la dîme du blé, et du moût, et de l’huile.

13 And I appoint treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites; and by their hand [is] Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for stedfast they have been reckoned, and on them [it is] to give a portion to their brethren.

Et j’établis sur les magasins Shélémia, le sacrificateur, et Tsadok, le scribe, et Pedaïa, d’entre les lévites, et à côté d’eux, Hanan, fils de Zaccur, fils de Matthania, car ils étaient estimés fidèles, et c’était à eux de faire les répartitions à leurs frères.

14 Be mindful of me, O my God, for this, and do not blot out my kind acts that I have done, for the house of my God, and for its charges.

Souviens-toi de moi, ô mon Dieu, à cause de ceci, et n’efface pas les bonnes actions que j’ai faites à l’égard de la maison de mon Dieu et de ce qu’il y avait à y observer.

15 In those days I have seen in Judah those treading wine-vats on sabbath, and bringing in the sheaves, and lading on the asses, and also, wine, grapes, and figs, and every burden, yea, they are bringing in to Jerusalem on the sabbath-day, and I testify in the day of their selling provision.

Dans ces jours-là, je vis en Juda des gens qui foulaient aux pressoirs, le [jour du] sabbat, et qui rentraient des gerbes et les chargeaient sur des ânes, et aussi du vin, des raisins et des figues, et toutes sortes de fardeaux, et qui les amenaient à Jérusalem le jour du sabbat; et je protestai, le jour où ils vendaient des denrées.

16 And the Tyrians have dwelt in it, bringing in fish, and every ware, and selling on sabbath to the sons of Judah and in Jerusalem.

Et les Tyriens y demeuraient, [et] ils apportaient du poisson et toutes sortes de marchandises, et les vendaient le [jour du] sabbat aux fils de Juda et dans Jérusalem.

17 And I strive with the freemen of Judah, and say to them, 'What [is] this evil thing that ye are doing, and polluting the sabbath-day?

Et je querellai les nobles de Juda, et je leur dis: Qu’est-ce que cette chose mauvaise que vous faites, profanant le jour du sabbat?

18 Thus did not your fathers do? and our God bringeth in on us all this evil, and on this city, and ye are adding fierceness on Israel, to pollute the sabbath.'

N’est-ce pas ainsi qu’ont fait vos pères, de sorte que notre Dieu a fait venir tout ce malheur sur nous et sur cette ville? et vous voulez ajouter à la colère contre Israël en profanant le sabbat!

19 And it cometh to pass, when the gates of Jerusalem have been dark before the sabbath, that I speak, and the doors are shut, and I say, that they do not open them till after the sabbath; and of my servants I have stationed at the gates; there doth not come in a burden on the sabbath-day.

Et il arriva que, lorsque les portes de Jérusalem commencèrent à être dans l’ombre, avant le sabbat, je commandai qu’on ferme les portes. Et je commandai qu’on ne les ouvre point jusqu’après le sabbat; et je plaçai de mes jeunes hommes aux portes, afin qu’aucun fardeau ne soit introduit le jour du sabbat.

20 And they lodge — the merchants and sellers of all ware — at the outside of Jerusalem, once or twice,

Et les marchands et les vendeurs de toutes sortes de marchandises passèrent la nuit hors de Jérusalem, une et deux fois;

21 and I testify against them, and say unto them, 'Wherefore are ye lodging over-against the wall? if ye repeat [it], a hand I put forth upon you;' from that time they have not come in on the sabbath.

et je les admonestai, et leur dis: Pourquoi passez-vous la nuit devant la muraille? Si vous le faites encore, je mettrai la main sur vous. Depuis ce temps-là, ils ne sont pas venus le [jour du] sabbat.

22 And I say to the Levites, that they be cleansed, and, coming in, keeping the gates, to sanctify the sabbath-day. Also, this, remember for me, O my God, and have pity on me, according to the abundance of Thy kindness.

Et je dis aux lévites qu’ils aient à se purifier et à venir garder les portes pour sanctifier le jour du sabbat. Souviens-toi de cela aussi en ma faveur, ô mon Dieu, et aie compassion de moi selon la grandeur de ta bonté.

23 Also, in those days, I have seen the Jews [who] have settled women of Ashdod, of Ammon, of Moab.

En ces jours-là aussi, je vis des Juifs qui avaient pris des femmes asdodiennes, ammonites, [et] moabites;

24 And of their sons, half are speaking Ashdoditish — and are not knowing to speak Jewish — and according to the language of people and people.

et leurs fils parlaient à moitié l’asdodien et ne savaient pas parler le juif, mais selon la langue de l’un ou de l’autre peuple.

25 And I strive with them, and declare them vile, and smite certain of them, and pluck off their hair, and cause them to swear by God, 'Ye do not give your daughters to their sons, nor do ye take of their daughters to your sons, and to yourselves.

Et je les querellai, et je les maudis, et je battis quelques hommes d’entre eux et leur arrachai les cheveux, et je les fis jurer par Dieu, [en disant]: Vous ne donnerez pas vos filles à leurs fils, et vous ne prendrez pas de leurs filles pour vos fils, ni pour vous-mêmes!

26 'By these did not Solomon king of Israel sin? and among the many nations there was no king like him, and beloved by his God he was, and God maketh him king over all Israel — even him did the strange women cause to sin.

Salomon, roi d’Israël, n’a-t-il pas péché en cela? Or, parmi la multitude des nations, il n’y avait point de roi comme lui, et il était aimé de son Dieu, et Dieu le fit roi sur tout Israël: lui aussi, les femmes étrangères l’ont fait pécher!

27 And to you do we hearken to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God, to settle strange women?'

Et vous écouterions-nous pour faire tout ce grand mal, pour être infidèles à notre Dieu en prenant des femmes étrangères?

28 And [one] of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest, [is] son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, and I cause him to flee from off me.

Et l’un des fils de Joïada, fils d’Éliashib, le grand sacrificateur, était gendre de Sanballat, le Horonite, et je le chassai d’auprès de moi.

29 Be mindful of them, O my God, for the redeemed of the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

Souviens-toi d’eux, ô mon Dieu, car ce sont des profanateurs de la sacrificature, et de l’alliance de la sacrificature et des lévites.

30 And I have cleansed them from every stranger, and appoint charges to priests and to Levites, each in his work,

Et je les purifiai de tout étranger, et je fixai les fonctions des sacrificateurs et des lévites, chacun dans son service,

31 and for the wood-offering at appointed times, and for first-fruits. Be mindful of me, O my God, for good.

et ce qui concernait l’offrande du bois à des époques fixes, et les premiers fruits. Souviens-toi de moi en bien, ô mon Dieu!
