Judges 9
1 and Abimelech son of Jerubbaal goeth to Shechem, unto his mother's brethren, and speaketh unto them, and unto all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,
Und Abimelech, der Sohn Jerub-Baals, ging nach Sichem zu den Brüdern seiner Mutter; und er redete zu ihnen und zu dem ganzen Geschlecht des Hauses des Vaters seiner Mutter und sprach:
2 'Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, Which [is] good for you — the ruling over you of seventy men (all the sons of Jerubbaal), or the ruling over you of one man? — and ye have remembered that I [am] your bone and your flesh.'
Redet doch vor den Ohren aller Bürger von Sichem: Was ist besser für euch, daß siebzig Männer über euch herrschen, alle Söhne Jerub-Baals, oder daß ein Mann über euch herrsche? und bedenket, daß ich euer Gebein und euer Fleisch bin.
3 And his mother's brethren speak concerning him, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, all these words, and their heart inclineth after Abimelech, for they said, 'He [is] our brother;'
Und die Brüder seiner Mutter redeten von ihm vor den Ohren aller Bürger von Sichem alle diese Worte. Und ihr Herz neigte sich Abimelech nach; denn sie sprachen: Er ist unser Bruder.
4 and they give to him seventy silverings out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hireth with them men, vain and unstable, and they go after him;
Und sie gaben ihm siebzig Sekel Silber aus dem Hause Baal-Berith; und Abimelech dingte damit lose und übermütige Männer, und sie folgten ihm nach.
5 and he goeth into the house of his father at Ophrah, and slayeth his brethren, sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone; and Jotham, youngest son of Jerubbaal, is left, for he was hidden.
Und er kam in das Haus seines Vaters, nach Ophra, und ermordete seine Brüder, die Söhne Jerub-Baals, siebzig Mann auf einem Steine; aber Jotham, der jüngste Sohn Jerub-Baals, blieb übrig, denn er hatte sich versteckt.
6 And all the masters of Shechem are gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and come and cause Abimelech to reign for king at the oak of the camp which [is] in Shechem;
Und alle Bürger von Sichem und das ganze Haus Millo [Wall, Burg] versammelten sich und gingen hin und machten Abimelech zum König bei der Terebinthe des Denkmals, die zu Sichem ist. [S. Jos. 24,26]
7 and they declare [it] to Jotham, and he goeth and standeth on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifteth up his voice, and calleth, and saith to them, 'Hearken unto me, O masters of Shechem, and God doth hearken unto you:
Und man berichtete es Jotham. Da ging er hin und stellte sich auf den Gipfel des Berges Gerisim, und er erhob seine Stimme und rief und sprach zu ihnen: Höret auf mich, Bürger von Sichem, so wird Gott auf euch hören!
8 'The trees have diligently gone to anoint over them a king, and they say to the olive, Reign thou over us.
Einst gingen die Bäume hin, einen König über sich zu salben; und sie sprachen zum Olivenbaum: Sei König über uns!
9 And the olive saith to them, Have I ceased from my fatness, by which they honour gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?
Und der Olivenbaum sprach zu ihnen: Sollte ich meine Fettigkeit aufgeben, welche Götter und Menschen an mir preisen, [And.: womit man Götter und Menschen durch mich ehrt] und sollte hingehen, zu schweben über den Bäumen?
10 And the trees say to the fig, Come thou, reign over us.
Da sprachen die Bäume zum Feigenbaum: Komm du, sei König über uns!
11 And the fig saith to them, Have I ceased from my sweetness, and my good increase, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?
Und der Feigenbaum sprach zu ihnen: Sollte ich meine Süßigkeit aufgeben und meine gute Frucht, und sollte hingehen, zu schweben über den Bäumen?
12 'And the trees say to the vine, Come thou, reign over us.
Da sprachen die Bäume zum Weinstock: Komm du, sei König über uns!
13 And the vine saith to them, Have I ceased from my new wine, which is rejoicing gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?
Und der Weinstock sprach zu ihnen: Sollte ich meinen Most aufgeben, der Götter und Menschen erfreut, und sollte hingehen, zu schweben über den Bäumen?
14 And all the trees say unto the bramble, Come thou, reign over us.
Da sprachen alle Bäume zum Dornstrauch: Komm du, sei König über uns!
15 And the bramble saith unto the trees, If in truth ye are anointing me for king over you, come, take refuge in my shadow; and if not — fire cometh out from the bramble, and devoureth the cedars of Lebanon.
Und der Dornstrauch sprach zu den Bäumen: Wenn ihr mich in Wahrheit zum König über euch salben wollt, so kommet, vertrauet euch meinem Schatten an; [O. suchet Zuflucht in [oder unter] meinem Schatten] wenn aber nicht, so soll Feuer von dem Dornstrauch ausgehen und die Cedern des Libanon verzehren. -
16 'And, now, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted, when ye make Abimelech king; and if ye have done good with Jerubbaal, and with his house; and if according to the deed of his hands ye have done to him —
Und nun, wenn ihr in Wahrheit und in Redlichkeit gehandelt habt, daß ihr Abimelech zum König gemacht, und wenn ihr Gutes getan habt an Jerub-Baal und an seinem Hause, und wenn ihr ihm getan habt nach dem Tun seiner Hände, -
17 because my father hath fought for you, and doth cast away his life from [him], and deliver you from the hand of Midian;
denn mein Vater hat für euch gestritten und sein Leben dahingeworfen und euch aus der Hand Midians errettet;
18 and ye have risen against the house of my father to-day, and slay his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and cause Abimelech son of his handmaid to reign over the masters of Shechem, because he [is] your brother —
ihr aber habt euch heute wider das Haus meines Vaters erhoben und seine Söhne ermordet, siebzig Mann auf einem Steine, und habt Abimelech, den Sohn seiner Magd, zum König gemacht über die Bürger von Sichem, weil er euer Bruder ist-
19 yea, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, rejoice ye in Abimelech, and he doth rejoice — even he — in you;
wenn ihr also an diesem Tage in Wahrheit und in Redlichkeit an Jerub-Baal und an seinem Hause gehandelt habt, so freuet euch Abimelechs, und auch er möge sich euer freuen!
20 and if not — fire cometh out from Abimelech and devoureth the masters of Shechem and the house of Millo, and fire cometh out from the masters of Shechem and from the house of Millo, and devoureth Abimelech.'
Wenn aber nicht, so gehe Feuer von Abimelech aus und verzehre die Bürger von Sichem und das Haus Millo; und es gehe ein Feuer aus von den Bürgern von Sichem und von dem Hause Millo und verzehre Abimelech!
21 And Jotham hasteth, and fleeth, and goeth to Beer, and dwelleth there, from the face of Abimelech his brother.
Und Jotham floh und entwich und ging nach Beer; und er blieb daselbst wegen seines [O. aus Furcht vor seinem] Bruders Abimelech.
22 And Abimelech is prince over Israel three years,
Und Abimelech herrschte über Israel drei Jahre.
23 and God sendeth an evil spirit between Abimelech and the masters of Shechem, and the masters of Shechem deal treacherously with Abimelech,
Und Gott sandte einen bösen Geist zwischen Abimelech und die Bürger von Sichem; und die Bürger von Sichem handelten treulos gegen Abimelech,
24 for the coming in of the violence [to] the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, and of their blood to place [it] on Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and on the masters of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.
damit die Gewalttat an den siebzig Söhnen Jerub-Baals über ihn käme, und ihr Blut gelegt würde auf ihren Bruder Abimelech, der sie ermordet, und auf die Bürger von Sichem, die seine Hände gestärkt hatten, seine Brüder zu ermorden.
25 And the masters of Shechem set for him ambushes on the top of the hills, and rob every one who passeth over by them in the way, and it is declared to Abimelech.
Und die Bürger von Sichem legten einen Hinterhalt [Eig. Nachsteller] wider ihn auf die Gipfel der Berge, und sie [d. h. der Hinterhalt, die Nachsteller] beraubten jeden, der des Weges bei ihnen vorüberzog. Und es wurde dem Abimelech berichtet.
26 And Gaal son of Ebed cometh — also his brethren — and they pass over into Shechem, and the masters of Shechem trust in him,
Und Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, kam mit seinen Brüdern, und sie zogen durch Sichem; und die Bürger von Sichem vertrauten ihm.
27 and go out into the field, and gather their vineyards, and tread, and make praises, and go into the house of their god, and eat and drink, and revile Abimelech.
Und sie gingen aufs Feld hinaus und lasen ihre Weinberge und kelterten; und sie hielten ein Dankfest und gingen in das Haus ihres Gottes und aßen und tranken und fluchten dem Abimelech.
28 And Gaal son of Ebed saith, 'Who [is] Abimelech, and who [is] Shechem, that we serve him? is [he] not son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his commander? Serve ye the men of Hamor father of Shechem, and wherefore do we serve him — we?
Und Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, sprach: Wer ist Abimelech und wer Sichem, daß wir ihm dienen sollten? Ist er nicht der Sohn Jerub-Baals, und Sebul sein Statthalter? Dienet den Männern Hemors, des Vaters von Sichem! denn warum sollten wir ihm dienen?
29 and oh that this people were in my hand — then I turn Abimelech aside;' and he saith to Abimelech, 'Increase thy host, and come out.'
Hätte ich nur dieses Volk unter meiner Hand, so wollte ich Abimelech wegschaffen! Und er sprach von Abimelech: Mehre nur dein Heer und ziehe aus!
30 And Zebul, prince of the city, heareth the words of Gaal son of Ebed, and his anger burneth,
Und Sebul, der Oberste der Stadt, hörte die Worte Gaals, des Sohnes Ebeds, und sein Zorn entbrannte;
31 and he sendeth messengers unto Abimelech deceitfully, saying, 'Lo, Gaal son of Ebed and his brethren are coming into Shechem, and lo, they are fortifying the city against thee;
und er sandte Boten an Abimelech mit List und sprach: Siehe, Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, und seine Brüder sind nach Sichem gekommen, und siehe, sie wiegeln die Stadt wider dich auf. [O. verschließen, versperren die Stadt wider dich]
32 and, now, rise by night, thou and the people who [are] with thee, and lay wait in the field,
Und nun, mache dich in der Nacht auf, du und das Volk, das bei dir ist, und lege dich in Hinterhalt auf dem Felde.
33 and it hath been, in the morning, about the rising of the sun, thou dost rise early, and hast pushed against the city; and lo, he and the people who [are] with him are going out unto thee — and thou hast done to him as thy hand doth find.'
Und es geschehe am Morgen, wenn die Sonne aufgeht, so mache dich früh auf und überfalle die Stadt; und siehe, wenn er und das Volk, das bei ihm ist, gegen dich hinausziehen, so tue ihm, wie deine Hand es finden wird.
34 And Abimelech riseth, and all the people who [are] with him, by night, and they lay wait against Shechem — four detachments;
Und Abimelech und alles Volk, das mit ihm war, machten sich in der Nacht auf, und sie legten sich in vier Haufen gegen Sichem in Hinterhalt.
35 and Gaal son of Ebed goeth out, and standeth at the opening of the gate of the city, and Abimelech riseth — also the people who [are] with him — from the ambush,
Und Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, ging hinaus und trat an den Eingang des Stadttores. Da machten sich Abimelech und das Volk, das bei ihm war, aus dem Hinterhalt auf.
36 and Gaal seeth the people, and saith unto Zebul, 'Lo, people are coming down from the top of the hills;' and Zebul saith unto him, 'The shadow of the hills thou art seeing like men.'
Und Gaal sah das Volk und sprach zu Sebul: Siehe, Volk kommt von den Gipfeln der Berge herab. Und Sebul sprach zu ihm: Den Schatten der Berge siehst du für Männer an.
37 And Gaal addeth yet to speak, and saith, 'Lo, people are coming down from the high part of the land, and another detachment is coming by the way of the oak of Meonenim.'
Und Gaal redete wiederum und sprach: Siehe, Volk kommt von der Höhe des Landes herab, und ein Haufe kommt des Weges nach Elon-Meonenim. [Terebinthe der Zauberer]
38 And Zebul saith unto him, 'Where [is] now thy mouth, in that thou sayest, Who [is] Abimelech that we serve him? is not this the people against which thou hast kicked? go out, I pray thee now, and fight against it.'
Da sprach Sebul zu ihm: Wo ist nun dein Maul, da du sprachest: Wer ist Abimelech, daß wir ihm dienen sollten? Ist das nicht das Volk, welches du verachtet hast? Ziehe doch jetzt aus und streite wider ihn!
39 And Gaal goeth out before the masters of Shechem, and fighteth against Abimelech,
Und Gaal zog aus vor den Bürgern von Sichem und stritt wider Abimelech.
40 and Abimelech pursueth him, and he fleeth from his presence, and many fall wounded — unto the opening of the gate.
Und Abimelech jagte ihm nach, und er floh vor ihm; und es fielen viele Erschlagene bis an den Eingang des Tores.
41 And Abimelech abideth in Arumah, and Zebul casteth out Gaal and his brethren from dwelling in Shechem.
Und Abimelech blieb zu Aruma; und Sebul vertrieb Gaal und seine Brüder, so daß sie nicht mehr in Sichem blieben.
42 And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that the people go out to the field, and they declare [it] to Abimelech,
Und es geschah am anderen Tage, da ging das Volk aufs Feld hinaus; und man berichtete es dem Abimelech.
43 and he taketh the people, and divideth them into three detachments, and layeth wait in a field, and looketh, and lo, the people are coming out from the city, and he riseth against them, and smiteth them.
Und er nahm das Volk und teilte es in drei Haufen und legte sich in Hinterhalt auf dem Felde. Und er sah, und siehe, das Volk kam aus der Stadt heraus; und er erhob sich wider sie und schlug sie.
44 And Abimelech and the detachments who [are] with him have pushed on, and stand at the opening of the gate of the city, and the two detachments have pushed against all who are in the field, and smite them,
Und Abimelech und die Haufen, die mit ihm waren, brachen hervor und stellten sich an den Eingang des Stadttores; und zwei der Haufen fielen über alle her, die auf dem Felde waren, und erschlugen sie.
45 and Abimelech hath fought against the city all that day, and captureth the city, and the people who [are] in it he hath slain, and he breaketh down the city, and soweth it [with] salt.
Und Abimelech stritt wider die Stadt jenen ganzen Tag; und er nahm die Stadt ein, und das Volk, das darin war, tötete er; und er riß die Stadt nieder und bestreute sie mit Salz. [als Zeichen bleibender Verwüstung]
46 And all the masters of the tower of Shechem hear, and go in unto the high place of the house of the god Berith,
Und alle Bewohner [O. Bürger] des Turmes von Sichem hörten es, und sie gingen in die Burg [Viell. ein unterirdischer Raum; die Bedeutung des hebr. Wortes ist ungewiß] des Hauses des Gottes [El] Berith. [O. des Bundesgottes. Vergl. Kap. 8,33]
47 and it is declared to Abimelech that all the masters of the tower of Shechem have gathered themselves together,
Und es wurde dem Abimelech berichtet, daß alle Bewohner des Turmes von Sichem sich versammelt hätten.
48 and Abimelech goeth up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people who [are] with him, and Abimelech taketh the great axe in his hand, and cutteth off a bough of the trees, and lifteth it up, and setteth [it] on his shoulder, and saith unto the people who [are] with him, 'What ye have seen I have done — haste, do ye like it.'
Da stieg Abimelech auf den Berg Zalmon, er und alles Volk, das bei ihm war; und Abimelech nahm eine Axt in seine Hand und hieb einen Baumast ab und hob ihn auf und legte ihn auf seine Schulter, und er sprach zu dem Volke, das mit ihm war: Was ihr gesehen habt, das ich getan habe, das tut eilends wie ich.
49 And all the people also cut down each one his bough, and go after Abimelech, and set [them] at the high place, and burn by these the high place with fire, and also all the men of the tower of Shechem die, about a thousand men and women.
Da hieb auch das ganze Volk ein jeder seinen Ast ab, und sie folgten Abimelech nach und legten sie an die Burg und zündeten die Burg über ihnen mit Feuer an. Und so starben auch alle Leute des Turmes von Sichem, bei tausend Männer und Weiber.
50 And Abimelech goeth unto Thebez, and encampeth against Thebez, and captureth it,
Und Abimelech zog nach Tebez, und er belagerte Tebez und nahm es ein.
51 and a strong tower hath been in the midst of the city, and thither flee do all the men and the women, and all the masters of the city, and they shut [it] behind them, and go up on the roof of the tower.
Es war aber ein starker Turm mitten in der Stadt, und dahin flohen alle Männer und Weiber, alle Bürger der Stadt; und sie schlossen hinter sich zu und stiegen auf das Dach des Turmes.
52 And Abimelech cometh unto the tower, and fighteth against it, and draweth nigh unto the opening of the tower to burn it with fire,
Und Abimelech kam an den Turm und stritt wider ihn; und er nahte zum Eingang des Turmes, um ihn mit Feuer zu verbrennen.
53 and a certain woman doth cast a piece of a rider on the head of Abimelech, and breaketh his skull,
Da warf ein Weib den oberen Stein einer Handmühle auf den Kopf Abimelechs und zerschmetterte ihm den Schädel.
54 and he calleth hastily unto the young man bearing his weapons, and saith to him, 'Draw thy sword, and thou hast put me to death, lest they say of me — A woman slew him;' and his young man pierced him through, and he dieth.
Und er rief eilends den Knaben, der seine Waffen trug, und sprach zu ihm: Ziehe dein Schwert und töte mich, daß man nicht von mir sage: Ein Weib hat ihn umgebracht! Und sein Knabe durchstach ihn, und er starb.
55 And the men of Israel see that Abimelech [is] dead, and go each one to his place;
Und als die Männer von Israel sahen, daß Abimelech tot war, da gingen sie ein jeder an seinen Ort.
56 and God turneth back the evil of Abimelech which he did to his father to slay his seventy brethren;
Und so brachte Gott die Bosheit Abimelechs, die er an seinem Vater verübt hatte, indem er seine siebzig Brüder ermordete, auf ihn zurück.
57 and all the evil of the men of Shechem hath God turned back on their head, and come unto them doth the cursing of Jotham son of Jerubbaal.
Und die ganze Bosheit der Männer von Sichem brachte Gott auf ihren Kopf zurück, und es kam über sie der Fluch Jothams, des Sohnes Jerub-Baals.
