Jeremiah 38

1 And Shephatiah son of Mattan, and Gedaliah son of Pashhur, and Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchiah, hear the words that Jeremiah is speaking unto all the people, saying,

Da vernahmen Saphatja, der Sohn Mathans, und Gedalja, der Sohn Pashurs, und Juchal, der Sohn Selemjas, und Pashur, der Sohn Malkijas, die Worte, die Jeremia zum gesamten Volke redete, indem er sprach:

2 'Thus said Jehovah: He who is remaining in this city dieth, by sword, by famine, and by pestilence, and he who is going forth unto the Chaldeans liveth, and his soul hath been to him for a prey, and he liveth.

So spricht Jahwe: Wer in dieser Stadt bleibt, der wird durch das Schwert, durch den Hunger und durch die Pest umkommen; wer sich aber den Chaldäern ergiebt, der wird am Leben bleiben und wird sein Leben zur Beute haben und leben.

3 Thus said Jehovah: This city is certainly given into the hand of the force of the king of Babylon, and he hath captured it.'

So spricht Jahwe: Diese Stadt wird gewiß der Gewalt des Heeres des Königs von Babel überliefert werden, und er wird sie einnehmen!

4 And the heads say unto the king, 'Let, we pray thee, this man be put to death, because that he is making feeble the hands of the men of war, who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking unto them according to these words, for this man is not seeking for the peace of this people, but for its evil.'

Da sprachen die obersten Beamten zum Könige: Laß doch diesen Mann töten! Er macht ja doch nur die Kriegsleute, die in dieser Stadt noch übrig geblieben sind, und das ganze Volk mutlos, indem er derartige Reden gegen sie führt; denn dieser Mann ist nicht auf Heil für dieses Volk bedacht, sondern auf Unheil!

5 And the king Zedekiah saith, 'Lo, he [is] in your hand: for the king is not able for you [in] anything.'

Der König Zedekia aber antwortete: So nehmt ihn hin! denn der König kann nichts wider euch ausrichten.

6 And they take Jeremiah, and cast him into the pit of Malchiah son of the king, that [is] in the court of the prison, and they send down Jeremiah with cords; and in the pit there is no water, but mire, and Jeremiah sinketh in the mire.

Da nahmen sie Jeremia und warfen ihn in die Cisterne des Prinzen Malkija, die sich im Wachthofe befand, und zwar ließen sie Jeremia mit Stricken hinab, - in der Cisterne indes war kein Wasser, sondern nur Schlamm, - und Jeremia sank in den Schlamm hinein.

7 And Ebed-Melech the Cushite, a eunuch who [is] in the king's house, heareth that they have put Jeremiah into the pit; and the king is sitting at the gate of Benjamin,

Als nun Ebed-Melech, der Äthiope, ein Hämling, der im Palaste des Königs in Diensten war, vernahm, daß man Jeremia in die Cisterne gethan hatte, - der König aber weilte unterdes im Benjaminthore -,

8 and Ebed-Melech goeth forth from the king's house, and speaketh unto the king, saying,

da verließ Ebed-Melech den königlichen Palast und redete den König also an:

9 'My lord, O king, these men have done evil [in] all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the pit, and he dieth in his place because of the famine, for there is no more bread in the city.'

Mein Herr und König! Jene Männer haben übel gehandelt mit alledem, was sie dem Propheten Jeremia angethan haben, daß sie ihn in die Cisterne geworfen haben, so daß er ebendort Hungers sterben muß, weil kein Brot mehr in der Stadt ist.

10 And the king commandeth Ebed-Melech the Cushite, saying, 'Take with thee from this thirty men, and thou hast brought up Jeremiah the prophet from the pit, before he dieth.'

Da befahl der König dem Äthiopen Ebed-Melech: Nimm von hier drei Männer mit dir und hole den Propheten Jeremia aus der Cisterne herauf, ehe er stirbt!

11 And Ebed-Melech taketh the men with him, and entereth the house of the king, unto the place of the treasury, and taketh thence worn-out clouts, and worn-out rags, and sendeth them unto Jeremiah unto the pit by cords.

und Ebed-Melech nahm die Männer mit sich, begab sich in den königlichen Palast in den Raum unter der Schatzkammer und holte von dort Lumpen von zerrissenen und Lumpen von zerriebenen Zeugen und ließ sie an Stricken zu Jeremia in die Cisterne hinab.

12 And Ebed-Melech the Cushite saith unto Jeremiah, 'Put, I pray thee, the worn-out clouts and rags under thine arm-holes, at the place of the cords,' and Jeremiah doth so,

Sodann rief der Äthiope Ebed-Melech Jeremia zu: Lege doch die Lumpen von den zerrissenen und zerriebenen Zeugen unter die Gelenke deiner Arme unter die Stricke! und Jeremia that so.

13 and they draw out Jeremiah with cords, and bring him up out of the pit, and Jeremiah dwelleth in the court of the prison.

Hierauf zogen sie Jeremia an den Stricken aus der Cisterne herauf, und Jeremia blieb nun im Wachthofe.

14 And the king Zedekiah sendeth, and taketh Jeremiah the prophet unto him, unto the third entrance that [is] in the house of Jehovah, and the king saith unto Jeremiah, 'I am asking thee a thing, do not hide from me anything.'

Der König Zedekia aber ließ den Propheten Jeremia zu sich in den dritten Eingang am Tempel Jahwes holen und der König sprach zu Jeremia: Ich will dich etwas fragen, - verhehle mir nichts!

15 And Jeremiah saith unto Zedekiah, 'When I declare to thee, dost thou not surely put me to death? and when I counsel thee, thou dost not hearken unto me.'

Jeremia aber sprach zu Zedekia: Wenn ich es dir kundthue, - tötest du mich dann etwa nicht? und wenn ich dir rate, so hörst du doch nicht auf mich!

16 And the king Zedekiah sweareth unto Jeremiah in secret, saying, 'Jehovah liveth, He who made for us this soul, I do not put thee to death, nor give thee unto the hand of these men who are seeking thy soul.'

Da schwur der König Zedekia dem Jeremia insgeheim: So wahr Jahwe lebt, der uns dieses Leben geschaffen hat, - ich werde dich nicht töten, noch werde ich dich der Gewalt jener Männer, die dir nach dem Leben trachten, überliefern!

17 And Jeremiah saith unto Zedekiah, 'Thus said Jehovah, God of Hosts, God of Israel: If thou dost certainly go forth unto the heads of the king of Babylon, then hath thy soul lived, and this city is not burned with fire, yea, thou hast lived, thou and thy house.

Da sprach Jeremia zu Zedekia: So spricht Jahwe, der Gott der Heerscharen, der Gott Israels: Wenn du dich den Obersten des Königs von Babel ergiebst, so wird dein Leben ungefährdet sein, und diese Stadt wird nicht niedergebrannt werden, und du wirst samt deinem Hause am Leben bleiben.

18 And if thou dost not go forth unto the heads of the king of Babylon, then hath this city been given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they have burnt it with fire, and thou dost not escape from their hand.'

Ergiebst du dich aber den Obersten des Königs von Babel nicht, so wird diese Stadt der Gewalt der Chaldäer überliefert werden, und sie werden sie niederbrennen, und auch du wirst ihren Händen nicht entrinnen!

19 And the king Zedekiah saith unto Jeremiah, 'I am fearing the Jews who have fallen unto the Chaldeans, lest they give me into their hand, and they have insulted me.'

Da sprach der König Zedekia zu Jeremia: Ich habe Angst vor den Judäern, die bereits zu den Chaldäern übergelaufen sind, - man möchte mich ihnen preisgeben, daß sie ihren Spott mit mir treiben!

20 And Jeremiah saith, 'They do not give thee up; hearken, I pray thee, to the voice of Jehovah, to that which I am speaking unto thee, and it is well for thee, and thy soul doth live.

Jeremia aber sprach: Man wird dich ihnen nicht preisgeben! Höre doch auf das Gebot Jahwes in dem, was ich zu dir sage, so soll es dir wohl ergehen und du sollst am Leben bleiben!

21 'And if thou art refusing to go forth, this [is] the thing that Jehovah hath shewn me:

Weigerst du dich jedoch, dich zu ergeben, so ist's das, was mich Jahwe hat schauen lassen:

22 That, lo, all the women who have been left in the house of the king of Judah are brought forth unto the heads of the king of Babylon, and lo, they are saying: Persuaded thee, and prevailed against thee, Have thine allies, Sunk into mire have thy feet, They have been turned backward.

Fürwahr, alle Weiber, die im Palaste des Königs von Juda übrig sein werden, die sollen zu den Obersten des Königs von Babel hinausgebracht werden, während sie rufen: “Sie haben dich zu verleiten gesucht und haben dich übermocht, die Männer deines Vertrauens! Nun deine Füße im Sumpfe stecken, haben sie sich rückwärts verzogen!”

23 'And all thy wives, and thy sons, are brought forth unto the Chaldeans, and thou dost not escape from their hand, for by the hand of the king of Babylon thou art caught, and this city is burnt with fire.'

Alle deine Weiber aber samt deinen Kindern wird man zu den Chaldäern hinausbringen, und du selbst wirst ihren Händen auch nicht entrinnen, vielmehr du sollst ergriffen werden und in die Gewalt des Königs von Babel überliefert werden, und diese Stadt wird niedergebrannt werden.

24 And Zedekiah saith unto Jeremiah, 'Let no man know of these words, and thou dost not die;

Da sprach Zedekia zu Jeremia: Niemand darf von dieser Verhandlung erfahren, sonst mußt du sterben!

25 and when the heads hear that I have spoken with thee, and they have come in unto thee, and have said unto thee, Declare to us, we pray thee, what thou didst speak unto the king, do not hide [it] from us, and we do not put thee to death, and what the king spake unto thee,

Wenn aber die obersten Beamten erfahren, daß ich mit dir geredet habe, und zu dir kommen und zu dir sprechen: “Teile uns doch mit, was du zum Könige gesagt hast, - verhehle uns nichts davon, sonst töten wird dich! - und was der König zu dir gesagt hat”,

26 then thou hast said unto them, I am causing my supplication to fall before the king, not to cause me to return to the house of Jonathan, to die there.'

so sprich zu ihnen: Ich bat den König demütig, mich nicht wieder in das Haus Jonathans zurückkehren zu lassen, daß ich dort umkäme!

27 And all the heads come in unto Jeremiah, and ask him, and he declareth to them according to all these words that the king commanded, and they keep silent from him, for the matter was not heard;

Und es kamen alle obersten Beamten zu Jeremia und fragten ihn; er aber gab ihnen genau so Bescheid, wie der König befohlen hatte. Da ließen sie ihn in Ruhe, denn es hatte von dem Vorgange nichts weiter verlautet.

28 and Jeremiah dwelleth in the court of the prison till the day that Jerusalem hath been captured, and he was [there] when Jerusalem was captured.

Und so verblieb Jeremia im Wachthofe bis zu dem Tage, da Jerusalem eingenommen wurde.
