Romans 4
1 What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?
Was wollen wir denn sagen von unserem Vater Abraham, daß er dem Fleische nach erlangt habe?
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.
Denn wenn Abraham durch Werke gerechtfertigt ward, so hatte er Ruhm, aber nicht bei Gott.
3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
Denn was sagt die Schrift? Abraham glaubte Gott, und es ward ihm zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet.
4 Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.
Dem aber, der Werke tut, wird der Lohn nicht aus Gnade zugerechnet, sondern aus Schuldigkeit.
5 But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
Dem aber, der nicht Werke tut, aber an Den glaubt, Der den Gottlosen gerecht macht, wird sein Glaube zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet.
6 Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
Wie denn auch David den Menschen selig preist, dem Gott Gerechtigkeit zurechnet ohne Werke:
7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
Selig sind die, denen die Missetaten vergeben und deren Sünden bedeckt sind.
8 Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.”
Selig ist der Mann, dem der Herr die Sünde nicht zurechnet.
9 Is this blessing then pronounced only on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.
Geht nun dieses Seligpreisen auf die Beschneidung oder auch auf die Vorhaut? Denn wir sagen, daß dem Abraham der Glaube zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet ward.
10 How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
Wie ward er ihm nun angerechnet? In der Beschneidung, oder in der Vorhaut? nicht in der Beschneidung, sondern in der Vorhaut.
11 He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.
Und das Zeichen der Beschneidung empfing er als Siegel der Gerechtigkeit des Glaubens in der Vorhaut, auf daß er Vater würde aller derer, die da glauben in der Vorhaut, auf daß auch ihnen die Gerechtigkeit zugerechnet werde;
12 He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.
Und auch Vater der Beschneidung denen, die nicht nur in der Beschneidung sind, sondern auch in die Fußstapfen ihres Vaters Abraham treten, da dieser noch in der Vorhaut Glauben bewies.
13 For the promise to Abraham and to his offspring that he would be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Denn nicht durch das Gesetz ist dem Abraham oder seinem Samen die Verheißung geworden, daß er Erbe der Welt werden sollte, sondern durch die Gerechtigkeit des Glaubens.
14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.
Denn wenn die, welche das Gesetz haben, Erben sind, so ist der Glaube zunichte gemacht und die Verheißung aufgehoben,
15 For the law produces wrath; for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.
Weil das Gesetz Zorn bewirkt; wo aber kein Gesetz ist, da ist auch keine Übertretung,
16 For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the offspring, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.
Darum ward sie gegeben wegen des Glaubens, auf daß die Verheißung aus Gnade allem Samen gesichert wäre, nicht allein dem, der unter dem Gesetz ist, sondern auch dem, der den Glauben Abrahams hat, der unser aller Vater ist,
17 As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.
Wie denn geschrieben steht: Ich habe dich zum Vater vieler Völker gemacht; vor dem Gott, Dem er Glauben schenkte, Der die Toten lebendig macht, und das, was nicht ist, ins Dasein ruft.
18 Against hope, Abraham in hope believed, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your offspring be.”
Der gegen Hoffnung auf Hoffnung glaubte, daß er Vater vieler Völker werden würde.
19 Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.
Und weil er nicht nachließ im Glauben und nicht in Betracht nahm seinen bereits abgestorbenen Leib, weil er schon hundert Jahre alt war, und auf den abgestorbenen Mutterleib der Sarah,
20 Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,
Zweifelte er nicht ungläubig an der Verheißung Gottes, sondern blieb stark im Glauben, und gab Gott die Ehre;
21 and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.
Und war voll überzeugt, daß Er, was Er verheißen, auch zu erfüllen die Macht hat.
22 Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”
Darum ward es ihm auch zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet;
23 Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,
Aber es ward nicht allein um seinetwillen geschrieben, daß es ihm zugerechnet wurde, sondern auch um unsertwillen, denn es wird zugerechnet werden,
24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
So wir an Den glauben, Der unseren Herrn Jesus von den Toten auferweckt hat,
25 who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.
Der um unserer Übertretungen willen hingegeben ward, und um unserer Rechtfertigung willen auferweckt worden ist.
