Romans 4
1 What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?
Quel avantage pouvons-nous dire que notre premier père Abraham a obtenu par lui-même?
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.
Si ce sont ses oeuvres qui l'ont justifié, il peut être orgueilleux; mais il ne le peut pas devant Dieu.
3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
Que dit l'Écriture: «Abraham eut foi en Dieu, et cela lui fut compté pour justice»
4 Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.
Or le salaire de celui qui a fait de bonnes oeuvres n'est pas considéré comme une grâce, mais comme une dette.
5 But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
Quant à celui qui n'a pas fait de bonnes oeuvres, mais qui a foi en Celui qui justifie le pécheur, sa foi lui «est comptée pour justice».
6 Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
David aussi parle du bonheur de celui que Dieu considère comme juste indépendamment de ses oeuvres:
7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
«Heureux ceux dont les fautes sont pardonnées Et dont les péchés sont effacés.
8 Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.”
Heureux celui dont le Seigneur ne porte pas en compte le péché.»
9 Is this blessing then pronounced only on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.
Cette béatitude ne s'adresse-t-elle qu'aux circoncis? ne s'applique-t-elle pas aussi aux incirconcis? Quand nous disons pour Abraham que «sa foi lui fut comptée pour justice, »
10 How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
comment lui fut-elle comptée? avant ou après sa circoncision? Ce n'est pas après, c'est avant sa circoncision!
11 He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.
Et il a reçu le signe de la circoncision comme le sceau de la justice que sa foi lui avait obtenue quand il n'était pas circoncis; c'était pour qu'il fût le père de tous les incirconcis qui auraient la foi, et qu'elle leur fût comptée pour justice.
12 He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.
Il devait être aussi le père des circoncis qui non seulement le seraient, mais qui marcheraient sur ses traces, en ayant la foi qu'il avait, lui, notre père Abraham, avant sa circoncision.
13 For the promise to Abraham and to his offspring that he would be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
En effet, ce n'est pas une Loi qui a assuré à Abraham et à ses descendants la possession du monde, c'est la justice que procure la foi.
14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.
Si c'est une Loi qui assure cette possession, alors la foi est inutile et la promesse est annulée.
15 For the law produces wrath; for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.
(La Loi ne produit que la colère, et là où il n'y a pas de Loi, il n'y a pas non plus de violation.)
16 For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the offspring, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.
Voici pourquoi la possession vient par la foi: c'est pour qu'elle soit l'effet d'une grâce, et que la promesse soit assurée à tous les descendants, non pas seulement à ceux qui ont reçu la Loi, mais à ceux qui ont eu la foi d'Abraham; il est notre père à tous
17 As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.
(ainsi que cela est écrit: «Je t'ai rendu père de plusieurs peuples»), il l'est devant le Dieu en qui il a cru, qui rend la vie aux morts et qui appelle à l'existence ce qui n'existe pas.
18 Against hope, Abraham in hope believed, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your offspring be.”
Contre toute espérance, il a été plein d'espérance, il a cru et il est devenu «le père de plusieurs peuples» (selon cette parole: «Telle sera ta postérité»).
19 Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.
Sa foi n'a pas faibli; il n'a pas fait attention à son extrême vieillesse (il était presque centenaire) ni à l'âge trop avancé de Sarra.
20 Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,
Il ne douta pas de la promesse de Dieu; il ne fut pas incrédule; au contraire, fortifié par sa foi, il donna gloire à Dieu,
21 and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.
convaincu que Celui qui a promis est assez puissant pour remplir sa promesse.
22 Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”
Voilà pourquoi «elle lui fut comptée pour justice».
23 Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,
Or ce n'est pas pour lui seul que ce mot est écrit: «cela lui fut compté»,
24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
c'est aussi pour nous; cela doit nous être «compté» également à nous qui croyons en celui qui a ressuscité des morts notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ,
25 who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.
lui qui «a été livré à cause de nos péchés» et a été ressuscité à cause de notre justification.
