Romans 4
1 What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?
Que dirons-nous donc qu'Abraham, notre ancêtre, a trouvé selon la chair?
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.
En effet, si Abraham a été justifié par les œuvres, il a de quoi se glorifier, mais pas devant Dieu.
3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
Car que dit l'Écriture? « Abraham a cru à Dieu, et cela lui a été imputé à justice. »
4 Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.
Or, pour celui qui travaille, la récompense n'est pas considérée comme une grâce, mais comme un dû.
5 But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
Mais à celui qui ne travaille pas, mais qui croit en celui qui justifie les impies, sa foi est imputée à la justice.
6 Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
De même, David prononce la bénédiction sur l'homme à qui Dieu compte la justice sans les œuvres:
7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
« Heureux ceux dont les fautes sont pardonnées, dont les péchés sont couverts.
8 Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.”
Heureux l'homme que le Seigneur ne chargera pas de péché. »
9 Is this blessing then pronounced only on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.
Cette bénédiction est-elle donc prononcée seulement sur les circoncis, ou aussi sur les incirconcis? Car nous disons que la foi a été imputée à Abraham comme une justice.
10 How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
Comment donc lui a-t-elle été imputée? Quand il était circoncis, ou quand il était incirconcis? Non pas dans la circoncision, mais dans l`incirconcision.
11 He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.
Il a reçu le signe de la circoncision, sceau de la justice de la foi qu'il avait dans l'incirconcision, afin d'être le père de tous ceux qui croient, malgré leur incirconcision, pour que la justice leur soit aussi imputée.
12 He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.
Il est le père de la circoncision pour ceux qui non seulement sont de la circoncision, mais qui marchent aussi sur les traces de la foi de notre père Abraham, qu'il avait dans l'incirconcision.
13 For the promise to Abraham and to his offspring that he would be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
En effet, la promesse faite à Abraham et à sa descendance d'être héritier du monde n'a pas été faite par la loi, mais par la justice de la foi.
14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.
Car si ceux qui sont de la loi sont héritiers, la foi est nulle, et la promesse est sans effet.
15 For the law produces wrath; for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.
Car la loi produit la colère; là où il n'y a pas de loi, il n'y a pas non plus de désobéissance.
16 For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the offspring, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.
C'est pourquoi il s'agit de la foi, afin que ce soit selon la grâce, pour que la promesse soit assurée à toute la descendance, non seulement à celle qui vient de la loi, mais aussi à celle qui vient de la foi d'Abraham, qui est notre père à tous.
17 As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.
Ainsi qu'il est écrit: « Je t'ai établi père d'une multitude de nations. » Ceci en présence de celui en qui il a cru: Dieu, qui donne la vie aux morts, et qui appelle les choses qui ne sont pas, comme si elles étaient.
18 Against hope, Abraham in hope believed, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your offspring be.”
Contre l'espérance, Abraham a cru dans l'espérance, afin d'être père d'un grand nombre de nations, selon ce qui avait été dit: « Ta descendance sera ainsi. »
19 Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.
Sans être affaibli dans la foi, il ne considéra pas son propre corps, déjà usé, (il avait environ cent ans), et la mort du sein de Sara.
20 Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,
Mais, regardant à la promesse de Dieu, il ne chancela pas par incrédulité, mais il se fortifia par la foi, rendant gloire à Dieu,
21 and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.
et étant pleinement assuré que ce qu'il avait promis, il pouvait aussi l'accomplir.
22 Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”
C'est pourquoi cela lui a été crédité à juste titre.
23 Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,
Or, il n'a pas été écrit que cela lui a été imputé à cause de lui seul,
24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
mais à cause de nous aussi, à qui cela sera imputé, à nous qui croyons en celui qui a ressuscité d'entre les morts Jésus notre Seigneur,
25 who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.
lequel a été livré à cause de nos fautes et est ressuscité pour notre justification.
