Romans 2
1 Therefore you are without excuse, O man, whoever you are who judge. For in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself. For you who judge practice the same things.
C'est pourquoi tu es inexcusable, ô homme, qui que tu sois, qui t'ériges en juge, car en jugeant les autres tu te condamnes toi-même; puisque toi qui juges, tu fais les mêmes choses.
2 We know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.
Or nous savons que le jugement de Dieu atteint infailliblement ceux qui commettent de telles choses.
3 Do you think this, O man who judges those who practice such things, and do the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?
Mais penses-tu, ô homme, toi qui juges ceux qui commettent de telles choses et qui toi-même les pratiques, que tu échapperas pour ton compte au jugement de Dieu?
4 Or do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
Ou bien méprises-tu la richesse de Sa bonté, et Sa patience, et Sa longanimité, ignorant que la bonté de Dieu te pousse à la repentance?
5 But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath, revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God,
Mais, avec ton endurcissement et ton cœur impénitent, tu t'amasses une provision de colère pour le jour de la colère et de la révélation du juste jugement de Dieu,
6 who “will pay back to everyone according to their works:”
qui rendra à chacun selon ses œuvres:
7 to those who by perseverance in well-doing seek for glory, honor, and incorruptibility, eternal life; (aiōnios g166)
d'un côté, la vie éternelle, à ceux qui cherchent, en persévérant dans les bonnes œuvres, la gloire, l'honneur et l'incorruptibilité; (aiōnios g166)
8 but to those who are self-seeking and don’t obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, will be wrath, indignation,
mais pour les hommes d'intrigue, et qui, désobéissant à la vérité, obéissent à l'injustice, la colère et le courroux.
9 oppression, and anguish on every soul of man who does evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Angoisse et tribulation pour l'âme de tout homme qui perpètre le mal, du Juif premièrement, puis du Grec!
10 But glory, honor, and peace go to every man who does good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Mais gloire, honneur et paix pour quiconque accomplit le bien, pour le Juif d'abord, puis pour le Grec!
11 For there is no partiality with God.
Car il n'y a pas devant Dieu d'acception de personnes.
12 For as many as have sinned without the law will also perish without the law. As many as have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.
En effet, tous ceux qui ont péché sans la loi, périront aussi sans la loi, et tous ceux qui ont péché sous la loi, seront jugés par la loi.
13 For it isn’t the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified
Car ce ne sont pas ceux qui écoutent la loi qui sont justes devant Dieu, mais ce sont ceux qui pratiquent la loi qui seront justifiés.
14 (for when Gentiles who don’t have the law do by nature the things of the law, these, not having the law, are a law to themselves,
En effet, quand les Gentils, qui n'ont pas la loi, font naturellement ce que prescrit la loi, ces hommes-là qui n'ont pas la loi se servent de loi à eux-mêmes,
15 in that they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying with them, and their thoughts among themselves accusing or else excusing them)
et montrent ainsi que l'œuvre de la loi est écrite dans leurs cœurs; leur propre conscience joignant son témoignage, et leurs pensées les accusant ou les excusant aussi tour à tour,
16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my Good News, by Jesus Christ.
dans la journée où, selon mon évangile, Dieu doit juger par Christ-Jésus ce que cachent les hommes.
17 Indeed you bear the name of a Jew, rest on the law, glory in God,
Mais si toi, tu portes le nom de Juif; si tu te reposes sur la loi; si tu t'enorgueillis de Dieu;
18 know his will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law,
si tu connais Sa volonté; si, instruit par la loi, tu approuves ce qui est excellent;
19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide of the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,
si tu as la confiance d'être le guide des aveugles, la lumière de ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres,
20 a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babies, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth.
l'instituteur des insensés, le docteur des ignorants, possédant dans la loi le type de la science et de la vérité…
21 You therefore who teach another, don’t you teach yourself? You who preach that a man shouldn’t steal, do you steal?
toi donc qui instruis les autres, comment ne t'instruis-tu pas toi-même? Toi qui prêches qu'on ne doit pas dérober, tu dérobes!
22 You who say a man shouldn’t commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
Toi qui dis qu'on ne doit pas commettre d'adultère, tu commets l'adultère! Toi qui as en abomination les idoles, tu pilles les temples!
23 You who glory in the law, do you dishonor God by disobeying the law?
Toi qui t'enorgueillis de la loi, tu déshonores Dieu par la transgression de la loi!
24 For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written.
Car « le nom de Dieu est blasphémé à cause de vous parmi les Gentils, » comme il est écrit.
25 For circumcision indeed profits, if you are a doer of the law, but if you are a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
En effet, si la circoncision est utile dans le cas où tu pratiques la loi, au contraire quand tu transgresses la loi, ta circoncision devient incirconcision.
26 If therefore the uncircumcised keep the ordinances of the law, won’t his uncircumcision be accounted as circumcision?
Si donc l'incirconcis observe les décrets de la loi, son incirconcision ne sera-t-elle pas comptée comme circoncision?
27 Won’t those who are physically uncircumcised, but fulfill the law, judge you, who with the letter and circumcision are a transgressor of the law?
Et l'incirconcision naturelle qui accomplit la loi ne te jugera-t-elle pas, toi qui, tout en possédant la lettre et la circoncision, transgresses la loi?
28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh;
Car ce n'est pas celui qui se montre tel extérieurement, qui est Juif, et ce n'est pas non plus la circoncision extérieure dans la chair, qui est la circoncision;
29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men, but from God.
mais c'est celui qui l'est intérieurement, qui est Juif, et la circoncision du cœur se fait par l'esprit et non selon la lettre; ce qui mérite une louange qui ne vient pas des hommes, mais de Dieu.
