< Mark 5 >

1 They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
And they came to the other side of the Sea — the country of the Gerasenes;
2 When he had come out of the boat, immediately a man with an unclean spirit met him out of the tombs.
and, as soon as Jesus had got out of the boat, he met a man coming out of the tombs, who was under the power of a foul spirit,
3 He lived in the tombs. Nobody could bind him any more, not even with chains,
and who made his home in the tombs. No one had ever been able to secure him, even with a chain;
4 because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the fetters broken in pieces. Nobody had the strength to tame him.
for, though he had many times been left secured with fetters and chains, he had snapped the chains and broken the fetters to pieces, and no one could master him.
5 Always, night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones.
Night and day alike, he was continually shrieking in the tombs and among the hills, and cutting himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and bowed down to him,
Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed to the ground before him,
7 and crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, don’t torment me.”
shrieking out in a loud voice: “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? For God’s sake do not torment me!”
8 For he said to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
For Jesus had said: “Come out from the man, you foul spirit.”
9 He asked him, “What is your name?” He said to him, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”
And he asked him: “What is your name?” “My name,” he said, “is Legion, for there are many of us;”
10 He begged him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
and he begged Jesus again and again not to send them away out of that country.
11 Now on the mountainside there was a great herd of pigs feeding.
There was a large drove of pigs close by, feeding on the hillside.
12 All the demons begged him, saying, “Send us into the pigs, that we may enter into them.”
And the spirits begged Jesus: “Send us into the pigs, that we may take possession of them.”
13 At once Jesus gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs. The herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and they were drowned in the sea.
Jesus gave them leave. They came out, and entered into the pigs; and the drove — about two thousand in number — rushed down the steep slope into the Sea and were drowned in the Sea.
14 Those who fed the pigs fled, and told it in the city and in the country. The people came to see what it was that had happened.
On this the men who tended them ran away, and carried the news to the town, and to the country round; and the people went to see what had happened.
15 They came to Jesus, and saw him who had been possessed by demons sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, even him who had the legion; and they were afraid.
When they came to Jesus, they found the possessed man sitting there, clothed and in his right mind — the very man who had had the ‘Legion’ in him — and they were awe-struck.
16 Those who saw it declared to them what happened to him who was possessed by demons, and about the pigs.
Then those who had seen it related to them all that had happened to the possessed man, as well as about the pigs;
17 They began to beg him to depart from their region.
upon which they began to beg Jesus to leave their neighbourhood.
18 As he was entering into the boat, he who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him.
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the possessed man begged him to let him stay with him.
19 He didn’t allow him, but said to him, “Go to your house, to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you and how he had mercy on you.”
But Jesus refused. “Go back to your home, to your own people,” he said, “and tell them of all that the Lord has done for you, and how he took pity on you.”
20 He went his way, and began to proclaim in Decapolis how Jesus had done great things for him, and everyone marveled.
So the man went, and began to proclaim in the district of the Ten Towns all that Jesus had done for him; and every one was amazed.
21 When Jesus had crossed back over in the boat to the other side, a great multitude was gathered to him; and he was by the sea.
By the time Jesus had re-crossed in the boat to the opposite shore, a great number of people had gathered to meet him, and were standing by the Sea.
22 Behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, came; and seeing him, he fell at his feet
And one of the Presidents of the Synagogue, whose name was Jaeirus, came and, as soon as he saw Jesus, threw himself at his feet with repeated entreaties.
23 and begged him much, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay your hands on her, that she may be made healthy, and live.”
“My little daughter,” he said, “is at the point of death; I beg you to come and place your hands on her, that her life may be spared.”
24 He went with him, and a great multitude followed him, and they pressed upon him on all sides.
So Jesus went with him. A great number of People followed Jesus, and kept pressing round him.
25 A certain woman who had a discharge of blood for twelve years,
Meanwhile a woman who for twelve years had suffered from haemorrhage,
26 and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse,
and undergone much at the hands of many doctors, (spending all she had without obtaining any relief, but, on the contrary, growing worse),
27 having heard the things concerning Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothes.
heard about Jesus, came behind in the crowd, and touched his cloak.
28 For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be made well.”
“If I can only touch his clothes,” she said, “I shall get well!”
29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
At once the mischief was stopped, and she felt in herself that she was cured of her complaint.
30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
Jesus at once became aware of the power that had gone out from him, and, turning round in the crowd, he said: “Who touched my clothes?”
31 His disciples said to him, “You see the multitude pressing against you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
“You see the people pressing round you,” exclaimed his disciples, “and yet you say ‘Who touched me?’”
32 He looked around to see her who had done this thing.
But Jesus looked about to see who had done it.
33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
Then the woman, in fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and threw herself down before him, and told him the whole truth.
34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be cured of your disease.”
“Daughter,” he said, “your faith has delivered you. Go, and peace be with you; be free from your complaint.”
35 While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler’s house, saying, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher any more?”
Before he had finished speaking, some people from the house of the President of the Synagogue came and said: “Your daughter is dead! Why should you trouble the Teacher further?”
36 But Jesus, when he heard the message spoken, immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Don’t be afraid, only believe.”
But Jesus, overhearing what they were saying, said to the President of the Synagogue: “Do not be afraid; only have faith.”
37 He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
And he allowed no one to accompany him, except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.
38 He came to the synagogue ruler’s house, and he saw an uproar, weeping, and great wailing.
Presently they reached the President’s house, where Jesus saw a scene of confusion — people weeping and wailing incessantly.
39 When he had entered in, he said to them, “Why do you make an uproar and weep? The child is not dead, but is asleep.”
“Why this confusion and weeping?” he said on entering. “The little child is not dead; she is asleep.”
40 They ridiculed him. But he, having put them all out, took the father of the child, her mother, and those who were with him, and went in where the child was lying.
They began to laugh at him; but he sent them all out, and then, with the child’s father and mother and his companions, went into the room where she was lying.
41 Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, “Talitha cumi!” which means, being interpreted, “Girl, I tell you, get up!”
Taking her hand, Jesus said to her: “Taleitha, koum!” — which means ‘little girl, I am speaking to you — Rise!’
42 Immediately the girl rose up and walked, for she was twelve years old. They were amazed with great amazement.
The little girl stood up at once, and began to walk about; for she was twelve years old. And, as soon as they saw it, they were overwhelmed with amazement;
43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and commanded that something should be given to her to eat.
but Jesus repeatedly cautioned them not to let any one know of it, and told them to give her something to eat.
