< Mark 3 >

1 He entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there whose hand was withered.
Jesus went to the synagogue again. A man was there who had a crippled hand.
2 They watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day, that they might accuse him.
Some of those there were watching Jesus to see if he would heal the man on the Sabbath, because they were looking for a reason to accuse him of breaking the law.
3 He said to the man whose hand was withered, “Stand up.”
Jesus told the man with the crippled hand, “Come and stand here in front of everyone.”
4 He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good or to do harm? To save a life or to kill?” But they were silent.
“Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath, or to do evil? Should you save life, or should you kill?” he asked them. But they didn't say a word.
5 When he had looked around at them with anger, being grieved at the hardening of their hearts, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored as healthy as the other.
He looked around at them in exasperation, very upset by their hard-hearted attitude. Then he told the man, “Hold out your hand.” The man held out his hand, and it was healed.
6 The Pharisees went out, and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.
The Pharisees left, and immediately began plotting with Herod's party as to how they might kill Jesus.
7 Jesus withdrew to the sea with his disciples; and a great multitude followed him from Galilee, from Judea,
Meanwhile Jesus returned to the Sea, and a large crowd followed him. They were from Galilee, Judea,
8 from Jerusalem, from Idumaea, beyond the Jordan, and those from around Tyre and Sidon. A great multitude, hearing what great things he did, came to him.
Jerusalem, Idumea, Transjordan, and from the regions of Tyre and Sidon. So many people came to see him because they'd heard all he was doing.
9 He spoke to his disciples that a little boat should stay near him because of the crowd, so that they wouldn’t press on him.
Jesus told his disciples to have a small boat ready in case the crowd crushed him,
10 For he had healed many, so that as many as had diseases pressed on him that they might touch him.
because he had healed so many that all the sick people kept on pressing towards him so they could touch him.
11 The unclean spirits, whenever they saw him, fell down before him and cried, “You are the Son of God!”
Whenever the evil spirits saw him they would fall down in front of him and shout out, “You are the Son of God!”
12 He sternly warned them that they should not make him known.
But he commanded them not to reveal who he was.
13 He went up into the mountain and called to himself those whom he wanted, and they went to him.
Then Jesus went away to the hill country. He called those he wanted to be with him, and they came to him.
14 He appointed twelve, that they might be with him, and that he might send them out to preach
He chose twelve to be with him, and called them apostles. They were to be with him, and he would send them out to announce the good news,
15 and to have authority to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons:
and with the authority to drive out demons.
16 Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter);
These are the twelve he chose: Simon (whom he called Peter),
17 James the son of Zebedee; and John, the brother of James, (whom he called Boanerges, which means, Sons of Thunder);
James the son of Zebedee and his brother John (who he called Boanerges, meaning “sons of thunder”),
18 Andrew; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot;
Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Revolutionary,
19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. Then he came into a house.
and Judas Iscariot (who betrayed him).
20 The multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
Jesus went home, but such a large crowd gathered again that he and his disciples didn't even have time to eat.
21 When his friends heard it, they went out to seize him; for they said, “He is insane.”
When Jesus' family heard about it, they came to take him away, saying, “He's lost his senses!”
22 The scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul,” and, “By the prince of the demons he casts out the demons.”
But the religious leaders from Jerusalem said, “He's possessed by Beelzebub! It's by the ruler of demons that he's driving out demons!”
23 He summoned them and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?
But Jesus called them over to him. Using illustrations he asked them, “How can Satan throw out Satan?
24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
A kingdom fighting itself can't continue.
25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
A household that's divided is doomed.
26 If Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he can’t stand, but has an end.
If Satan is divided and fights against himself, he won't last long—he'll soon come to an end.
27 But no one can enter into the house of the strong man to plunder unless he first binds the strong man; then he will plunder his house.
Clearly, if someone breaks into the house of a strong man and tries to take his things, he won't get far in his theft unless he ties up the strong man first.”
28 “Most certainly I tell you, all sins of the descendants of man will be forgiven, including their blasphemies with which they may blaspheme;
“I tell you the truth: all sins and blasphemies can be forgiven,
29 but whoever may blaspheme against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation.” (aiōn g165, aiōnios g166)
but if people blaspheme by rejecting the Holy Spirit they can never be forgiven, because they are guilty of an eternal sin.” (aiōn g165, aiōnios g166)
30 —because they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
(Jesus said this because they said, “He has an evil spirit.”)
31 His mother and his brothers came, and standing outside, they sent to him, calling him.
Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived. They waited outside and sent him a message, asking him to come out.
32 A multitude was sitting around him, and they told him, “Behold, your mother, your brothers, and your sisters are outside looking for you.”
The crowd that was sitting around him told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside asking for you.”
33 He answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?”
“Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” he responded.
34 Looking around at those who sat around him, he said, “Behold, my mother and my brothers!
Looking around at all those sitting there in a circle, he said, “Here is my mother! Here are my brothers!
35 For whoever does the will of God is my brother, my sister, and mother.”
Whoever does what God wants, they are my brother, and sister, and mother.”
