John 3
1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
さて、パリサイ人の中にニコデモという人がいた。ユダヤ人の指導者であった。
2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”
この人が、夜、イエスのもとに来て言った。「先生。私たちは、あなたが神のもとから来られた教師であることを知っています。神がともにおられるのでなければ、あなたがなさるこのようなしるしは、だれも行なうことができません。」
3 Jesus answered him, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom.”
イエスは答えて言われた。「まことに、まことに、あなたに告げます。人は、新しく生まれなければ、神の国を見ることはできません。」
4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
ニコデモは言った。「人は、老年になっていて、どのようにして生まれることができるのですか。もう一度、母の胎にはいって生まれることができましょうか。」
5 Jesus answered, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and Spirit, he can’t enter into God’s Kingdom.
イエスは答えられた。「まことに、まことに、あなたに告げます。人は、水と御霊によって生まれなければ、神の国にはいることができません。
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
肉によって生まれた者は肉です。御霊によって生まれた者は霊です。
7 Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’
あなたがたは新しく生まれなければならない、とわたしが言ったことを不思議に思ってはなりません。
8 The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
風はその思いのままに吹き、あなたはその音を聞くが、それがどこから来てどこへ行くかを知らない。御霊によって生まれる者もみな、そのとおりです。」
9 Nicodemus answered him, “How can these things be?”
ニコデモは答えて言った。「どうして、そのようなことがありうるのでしょう。」
10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things?
イエスは答えて言われた。「あなたはイスラエルの教師でありながら、こういうことがわからないのですか。
11 Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness.
まことに、まことに、あなたに告げます。わたしたちは、知っていることを話し、見たことをあかししているのに、あなたがたは、わたしたちのあかしを受け入れません。
12 If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
あなたがたは、わたしが地上のことを話したとき、信じないくらいなら、天上のことを話したとて、どうして信じるでしょう。
13 No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.
だれも天に上った者はいません。しかし天から下った者はいます。すなわち人の子です。
14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
モーセが荒野で蛇を上げたように、人の子もまた上げられなければなりません。
それは、信じる者がみな、人の子にあって永遠のいのちを持つためです。」 (aiōnios g166)
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
神は、実に、そのひとり子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。それは御子を信じる者が、ひとりとして滅びることなく、永遠のいのちを持つためである。 (aiōnios g166)
17 For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.
神が御子を世に遣わされたのは、世をさばくためではなく、御子によって世が救われるためである。
18 He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only born Son of God.
御子を信じる者はさばかれない。信じない者は神のひとり子の御名を信じなかったので、すでにさばかれている。
19 This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil.
そのさばきというのは、こうである。光が世に来ているのに、人々は光よりもやみを愛した。その行ないが悪かったからである。
20 For everyone who does evil hates the light and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed.
悪いことをする者は光を憎み、その行ないが明るみに出されることを恐れて、光のほうに来ない。
21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.”
しかし、真理を行なう者は、光のほうに来る。その行ないが神にあってなされたことが明らかにされるためである。
22 After these things, Jesus came with his disciples into the land of Judea. He stayed there with them and baptized.
その後、イエスは弟子たちと、ユダヤの地に行き、彼らとともにそこに滞在して、バプテスマを授けておられた。
23 John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came and were baptized;
一方ヨハネもサリムに近いアイノンでバプテスマを授けていた。そこには水が多かったからである。人々は次々にやって来て、バプテスマを受けていた。
24 for John was not yet thrown into prison.
――ヨハネは、まだ投獄されていなかったからである。――
25 Therefore a dispute arose on the part of John’s disciples with some Jews about purification.
それで、ヨハネの弟子たちが、あるユダヤ人ときよめについて論議した。
26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, he baptizes, and everyone is coming to him.”
彼らはヨハネのところに来て言った。「先生。見てください。ヨルダンの向こう岸であなたといっしょにいて、あなたが証言なさったあの方が、バプテスマを授けておられます。そして、みなあの方のほうへ行きます。」
27 John answered, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven.
ヨハネは答えて言った。「人は、天から与えられるのでなければ、何も受けることはできません。
28 You yourselves testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’
あなたがたこそ、『私はキリストではなく、その前に遣わされた者である。』と私が言ったことの証人です。
29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore my joy is made full.
花嫁を迎える者は花婿です。そこにいて、花婿のことばに耳を傾けているその友人は、花婿の声を聞いて大いに喜びます。それで、私もその喜びで満たされているのです。
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
あの方は盛んになり私は衰えなければなりません。」
31 “He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.
上から来る方は、すべてのものの上におられ、地から出る者は地に属し、地のことばを話す。天から来る方は、すべてのものの上におられる。
32 What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness.
この方は見たこと、また聞いたことをあかしされるが、だれもそのあかしを受け入れない。
33 He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true.
そのあかしを受け入れた者は、神は真実であるということに確認の印を押したのである。
34 For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure.
神がお遣わしになった方は、神のことばを話される。神が御霊を無限に与えられるからである。
35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.
父は御子を愛しておられ、万物を御子の手にお渡しになった。
