John 3
1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
さて，ユダヤ人の支配者で，ニコデモという名のファリサイ人に属する人がいた。
2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”
この人が，夜，彼のもとに来て，彼に言った。「ラビ，わたしたちはあなたが神のもとから来た教師だということを知っています。神が共におられなければ，あなたのなさるこのようなしるしを行なうことはだれにもできないからです」。
3 Jesus answered him, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom.”
イエスは彼に答えた，「本当にはっきりとあなたに告げる。人は再び生まれなければ，神の王国を見ることはできない」 。
4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
ニコデモはイエスに言った，「人は年老いてから，どうして生まれることができるのですか。自分の母の胎にもう一度入って生まれることなどできないではありませんか」。
5 Jesus answered, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and Spirit, he can’t enter into God’s Kingdom.
イエスは答えた，「本当にはっきりとあなたに告げる。人は水と霊から生まれなければ，神の王国に入ることはできない。
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
肉から生まれた物は肉だが，霊から生まれた物は霊だ。
7 Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’
『あなた方はみな再び生まれなければならない』と言ったことで，驚き怪しんではいけない。
8 The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
風はその望むところに吹く。あなたはその音は聞こえるが，それがどこから来てどこへ行くのかを知らない。霊から生まれる者もみな，そのようだ」 。
9 Nicodemus answered him, “How can these things be?”
ニコデモはイエスに答えた，「どうしてそのようなことがあり得るのでしょうか」。
10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things?
イエスは彼に答えた，「あなたはイスラエルの教師でありながら，こうしたことが理解できないのか。
11 Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness.
本当にはっきりとあなたに告げる。わたしたちは自分たちが知っていることを話し，自分が見たことを証言する。だが，あなた方はわたしたちの証言を受け入れない。
12 If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
わたしが地上の事柄を告げてもあなた方は信じない。わたしが天上の事柄について言うならば，あなた方はどうして信じるだろうか。
13 No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.
天から下ってきた者，すなわち天にいる人の子のほかには，だれも天に上った者はいない。
14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
ちょうどモーセが荒野で蛇を挙げたように，人の子も挙げられなければならない。
それは，彼を信じる者がみな滅びることなく，永遠の命を持つためだ。 (aiōnios g166)
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
神はご自分のひとり子を与えるほどに世を愛されたからだ。それは，彼を信じる者がみな滅びることなく，永遠の命を持つためだ。 (aiōnios g166)
17 For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.
神がご自分の子を世に遣わしたのは，世を裁くためではなく，世が彼を通して救われるためだからだ。
18 He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only born Son of God.
彼を信じる者は裁かれない。彼を信じない者はすでに裁かれている。神のひとり子の名を信じていないからだ。
19 This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil.
光が世に来ているのに，その業が悪いために，人々が光より闇を愛したことがその裁きだ。
20 For everyone who does evil hates the light and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed.
悪を行なう者はみな，光を憎んで，光の方に来ないからだ。その業が明るみに出ないようにするためだ。
21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.”
しかし，真実を行なう者は光の方へ来る。神にあってなされて来たその業が示されるためだ」 。
22 After these things, Jesus came with his disciples into the land of Judea. He stayed there with them and baptized.
こうした事ののち，イエスは弟子たちと共にユダヤの地へ行き，そこで彼らと共に滞在し，バプテスマを施していた。
23 John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came and were baptized;
ヨハネもサリムの近くのイノンでバプテスマを施していた。そこには水が多かったからである。人々は来て，バプテスマを受けていた。
24 for John was not yet thrown into prison.
ヨハネはまだ投獄されていなかったからである。
25 Therefore a dispute arose on the part of John’s disciples with some Jews about purification.
そこで，ヨハネの弟子たちの一部と何人かのユダヤ人たちとの間で，清めに関する論争が起こった。
26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, he baptizes, and everyone is coming to him.”
彼らは，ヨハネのところに来て，彼に言った。「ラビ，ヨルダンの向こうであなたと共にいた人，あなたが証言なさった人が，見てください，その人がバプテスマを施していて，みんなが彼のもとに来ています」。
27 John answered, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven.
ヨハネは答えた，「人は，天から与えられているのでなければ，何も受けることはできない。
28 You yourselves testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’
『わたしはキリストではない』が『わたしはその方より先に遣わされた』とわたしが言ったことを，あなた方自身が証言できる。
29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore my joy is made full.
花嫁を持つ者は花婿だ。立って彼の声を聞く花婿の友人は，彼の声のために大いに喜ぶ。だから，わたしの喜びは満たされている。
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
あの方は増し加わり，わたしは減らなければならない。
31 “He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.
上から来る方はすべての者の上におられる。地からの者は地に属し，地のことを話す。天から来る方はすべての者の上におられる。
32 What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness.
その方は自分が見聞きしたことを証言されるが，だれもその証言を受け入れない。
33 He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true.
その証言を受け入れた者は，神が真実な方だということに自分の証印を押したのだ。
34 For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure.
神が遣わされた方は神の言葉を話されるからであり，神は霊を量って与えたりはされないからだ。
35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.
父はみ子を愛しておられ，その方の手にすべての物を与えられた。
