John 11
1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.
Estaba entonces enfermo un hombre llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana.
2 It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
(Era María la que ungió al Señor con ungüento, y limpió sus pies con sus cabellos, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo.)
3 The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”
Enviaron pues sus hermanas a él, diciendo: Señor, he aquí, el que amas está enfermo.
4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”
Y oyéndo lo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino por gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
Y amaba Jesús a Marta, y a su hermana, y a Lázaro.
6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.
Como oyó, pues, que estaba enfermo, entonces a la verdad se quedó dos días en aquel lugar donde estaba.
7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”
Luego después de esto dijo a sus discípulos: Vamos a Judea otra vez.
8 The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”
Dícenle sus discípulos: Rabbi, ahora poco procuraban los Judíos apedrearte, ¿y vas otra vez allá?
9 Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
Respondió Jesús: ¿No tiene el día doce horas? El que anduviere de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo.
10 But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”
Mas el que anduviere de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él.
11 He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”
Dicho esto, díceles después: Lázaro nuestro amigo duerme; mas voy a despertarle del sueño.
12 The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
Dijéronle entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si duerme, bueno estará.
13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.
Mas esto decía Jesús de la muerte de él; y ellos pensaron que hablaba de dormir de sueño.
14 So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.
Entonces pues Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro es muerto;
15 I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”
Y huélgome por vosotros, que yo no haya estado allí, porque creáis; mas vamos a él.
16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, that we may die with him.”
Dijo entonces Tomás, el que se llama Dídimo, a sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él.
17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.
Vino pues Jesús, y hallólo, que había cuatro días que estaba en el sepulcro.
18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.
Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalem como quince estadios.
19 Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
Y muchos de los Judíos habían venido a Marta y a María, para consolarlas de su hermano.
20 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.
Entonces Marta, como oyó que Jesús venía, le salió a recibir; mas María estaba sentada en casa.
21 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.
Entonces Marta dijo a Jesús: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no hubiera muerto.
22 Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”
Mas sé que también ahora, todo lo que pidieres a Dios, te lo dará Dios.
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Dícele Jesús: Resucitará tu hermano.
24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
Marta le dice: Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección en el día postrero.
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.
Dícele Jesús: Yo soy la resurrección, y la vida: el que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá;
Y todo aquel que vive, y cree en mí no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto? (aiōn g165)
27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”
Ella le dice: Sí, Señor, yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que había de venir al mundo.
28 When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling you.”
Y esto dicho, se fue, y llamó en secreto a María su hermana, diciendo: El Maestro está aquí, y te llama.
29 When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him.
Ella, como lo oyó, se levanta prestamente, y viene a él.
30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.
(Porque aun no había llegado Jesús a la aldea, mas estaba en aquel lugar donde Marta le había salido a recibir.)
31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
Entonces los Judíos que estaban en casa con ella, y la consolaban, como vieron que María se había levantado prestamente, y había salido, la siguieron, diciendo: Va al sepulcro a llorar allí.
32 Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”
Mas María, como vino donde estaba Jesús, viéndole, derribóse a sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no hubiera muerto mi hermano.
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled,
Jesús entonces como la vio llorando, y a los Judíos que habían venido juntamente con ella llorando, gimió en espíritu, y se turbó,
34 and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
Y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Dícenle: Señor, ven, y lo verás.
35 Jesus wept.
Jesús lloraba.
36 The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”
Dijeron entonces los Judíos: ¡He aquí cómo le amaba!
37 Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”
Y algunos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste, que abrió los ojos del ciego, hacer que éste no muriera?
38 Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
Y Jesús, gimiendo otra vez en sí mismo, vino al sepulcro, que era una cueva, la cual tenía una piedra puesta encima.
39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
Dice Jesús: Quitád la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que había sido muerto, le dice: Señor, hiede ya; que es muerto de cuatro días.
40 Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”
Jesús le dice: ¿No te he dicho que si creyeres, verás la gloria de Dios?
41 So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.
Entonces quitaron la piedra de donde el muerto había sido puesto; y Jesús, alzando los ojos arriba, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy porque me has oído.
42 I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”
Y yo sabía que siempre me oyes; mas por causa del pueblo que está al rededor lo dije, para que crean que tú me has enviado.
43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, clamó a gran voz: Lázaro, ven fuera.
44 He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”
Entonces el que había sido muerto, salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas; y su rostro estaba envuelto en un sudario. Díceles Jesús: Desatádle, y dejádle ir.
45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him.
Entonces muchos de los Judíos que habían venido a María, y habían visto lo que había hecho Jesús, creyeron en él.
46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
Mas algunos de ellos fueron a los Fariseos, y les dijeron lo que Jesús había hecho.
47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.
Entonces los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los Fariseos juntaron concilio, y decían: ¿Qué hacemos? porque este hombre hace muchos milagros.
48 If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
Si le dejamos así, todos creerán en él; y vendrán los Romanos, y quitarán nuestro lugar y la nación.
49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,
Entonces Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo sacerdote de aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada,
50 nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”
Ni consideráis que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación se pierda.
51 Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
Mas esto no lo dijo de sí mismo; sino que, como era el sumo sacerdote de aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación;
52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
Y no solamente por aquella nación, mas también para que juntase en uno a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.
53 So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.
Así que desde aquel día consultaban juntos para matarle.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.
De manera que Jesús ya no andaba manifiestamente entre los Judíos; mas se fue de allí a la tierra que está junto al desierto, a una ciudad que se llama Efraím; y estábase allí con sus discípulos.
55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
Y la pascua de los Judíos estaba cerca; y muchos de la tierra subieron a Jerusalem antes de la pascua para purificarse.
56 Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”
Y buscaban a Jesús, y hablaban los unos con los otros estando en el templo: ¿Qué os parece, que no vendrá a la fiesta?
57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
Mas los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los Fariseos habían dado mandamiento, que si alguno supiese donde estuviera, que lo manifestase, para que le prendiesen.
