Hebrews 12
1 Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us,
Nous donc aussi, puisque nous sommes environnés d’une si grande nuée de témoins, rejetant tout fardeau et le péché qui nous entoure, courons avec persévérance dans la carrière qui nous est ouverte,
2 looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
les yeux fixés sur l’auteur et le consommateur de la foi, Jésus, qui, au lieu de la joie qu’il avait devant lui, a souffert la croix, méprisant l’ignominie, et s’est assis à la droite du trône de Dieu.
3 For consider him who has endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you don’t grow weary, fainting in your souls.
Considérez, en effet, celui qui a supporté contre lui-même de la part des pécheurs une telle contradiction, afin que vous ne vous lassiez point, l’âme découragée.
4 You have not yet resisted to blood, striving against sin.
Car vous n’avez pas encore résisté jusqu’au sang, en combattant contre le péché.
5 You have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with children, “My son, don’t take lightly the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by him;
Et vous avez oublié l’exhortation qui vous est adressée comme à des fils, en ces termes: Mon fils, ne néglige pas le châtiment du Seigneur, et ne te laisse pas abattre lorsqu’il te reprend,
6 for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
car le Seigneur châtie celui qu’il aime, et il frappe de verges tout fils qu’il reconnaît comme sien.
7 It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with children, for what son is there whom his father doesn’t discipline?
Ne vous découragez pas dans le châtiment. Dieu vous traite comme des fils; car quel est le fils que son père ne châtie point?
8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not children.
Et si vous êtes exempts du châtiment, auquel tous les autres ont part, c’est que vous êtes illégitimes, et non de vrais fils.
9 Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?
Et puis, si nos pères selon la chair nous ont châtiés et si nous les avons respectés, ne devons-nous pas à plus forte raison être soumis au Père des esprits, pour avoir la vie?
10 For they indeed for a few days disciplined us as seemed good to them, but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.
Car ceux-là nous châtiaient pour peu de jours, comme il leur plaisait; lui, il le fait pour notre bien, afin que nous participions à sa sainteté.
11 All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Tout châtiment, il est vrai, ne paraît pas être au premier moment un sujet de joie, mais de tristesse; toutefois, il produit ensuite un fruit paisible de justice pour ceux qui ont été ainsi exercés.
12 Therefore lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees,
Relevez donc vos mains languissantes et vos genoux qui fléchissent,
13 and make straight paths for your feet, so what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.
et faites à vos pieds des chemins droits, afin que celui qui est boiteux ne s’égare pas, mais plutôt qu’il soit guéri.
14 Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord,
Recherchez la paix avec tous, et la sainteté, sans laquelle personne ne verra Dieu;
15 looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you and many be defiled by it,
veillez à ce que personne ne manque à la grâce de Dieu, à ce qu’aucune racine d’amertume, poussant des rejetons, n’empêche la bonne semence, et que beaucoup n’en soient souillés.
16 lest there be any sexually immoral person or profane person, like Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal.
Que personne ne soit impur ou profane comme Esaü, qui pour un mets vendit son droit d’aînesse.
17 For you know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for a change of mind though he sought it diligently with tears.
Car sachez qu’ensuite, voulant obtenir la bénédiction de son père, il fut repoussé; car il ne put le faire changer de résolution, quoiqu’il le demandât avec larmes.
18 For you have not come to a mountain that might be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness, darkness, storm,
Car vous ne vous êtes pas approchés d’une montagne qu’on pût toucher, ni du feu ardent, ni de l’obscurité, et des ténèbres, et de la tempête;
19 the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which those who heard it begged that not one more word should be spoken to them,
ni du son de la trompette, ni du bruit des paroles, bruit tel que ceux qui l’entendirent demandèrent qu’on ne leur parlât plus.
20 for they could not stand that which was commanded, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned”.
Car ils ne pouvaient supporter cette injonction: Si même une bête touche la montagne, elle sera lapidée.
21 So fearful was the appearance that Moses said, “I am terrified and trembling.”
Et ce qu’on voyait était si terrible, que Moïse dit: Je suis effrayé et tout tremblant.
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable multitudes of angels,
Mais vous vous êtes approchés de la montagne de Sion, de la cité du Dieu vivant, de la Jérusalem céleste, d’une troupe de nombreux milliers d’anges,
23 to the festal gathering and assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,
et de l’Eglise des premiers-nés, qui sont inscrits dans le ciel, de Dieu juge de tous, des esprits des justes parvenus à la perfection
24 to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better than that of Abel.
et du médiateur d’une nouvelle alliance, Jésus, et du sang de l’aspersion, qui parle mieux que celui d’Abel.
25 See that you don’t refuse him who speaks. For if they didn’t escape when they refused him who warned on the earth, how much more will we not escape who turn away from him who warns from heaven,
Prenez garde de refuser d’entendre celui qui parle; car si ceux qui ont refusé d’entendre celui qui parlait sur la terre n’ont pas échappé, à plus forte raison n’échapperons-nous pas, si nous nous détournons de celui qui nous parle du ciel;
26 whose voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens.”
lui dont la voix ébranla alors la terre, et qui maintenant fait cette promesse en disant: Encore une fois j’ébranlerai non seulement la terre, mais aussi le ciel.
27 This phrase, “Yet once more” signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.
Or, en disant: Encore une fois, il indique le changement des choses ébranlées, comme étant faites pour un temps, afin que celles qui n’ont pas été branlées subsistent.
28 Therefore, receiving a Kingdom that can’t be shaken, let’s have grace, through which we serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe,
Ainsi donc, puisque nous avons reçu un royaume inébranlable, conservons la grâce, et par elle rendons à Dieu un culte qui lui soit agréable, avec crainte et avec respect.
29 for our God is a consuming fire.
En effet, notre Dieu est un feu dévorant.
