Hebrews 12
1 Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us,
Nous donc aussi, puisque nous sommes environnés d'une si grande nuée de témoins, rejetant tout fardeau et le péché qui nous enveloppe si facilement, courons avec persévérance dans la carrière qui nous est ouverte,
2 looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
regardant à Jésus, le chef et le consommateur de la foi, lui qui, en vue de la joie qui lui était offerte, a souffert la croix, méprisant l'ignominie, et s'est assis à la droite du trône de Dieu.
3 For consider him who has endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you don’t grow weary, fainting in your souls.
Considérez donc celui qui a supporté une si grande opposition de la part des pécheurs, afin que vous ne vous laissiez pas abattre en perdant courage.
4 You have not yet resisted to blood, striving against sin.
Vous n'avez pas encore résisté jusqu'au sang, en combattant contre le péché;
5 You have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with children, “My son, don’t take lightly the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by him;
et vous avez oublié l'exhortation qui vous est adressée, comme à des fils: «Mon Fils, ne méprise pas le châtiment du Seigneur, et ne perds pas courage, lorsqu'il te reprend;
6 for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
car le Seigneur châtie celui qu'il aime, et il frappe de ses verges tous ceux qu'il reconnaît pour ses enfants»
7 It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with children, for what son is there whom his father doesn’t discipline?
Si vous avez à endurer le châtiment, Dieu vous traite comme des fils; car quel est le fils que son père ne châtie pas?
8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not children.
Mais si vous êtes exempts du châtiment auquel tous ont part, alors vous êtes des enfants illégitimes; vous n'êtes pas de vrais fils.
9 Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?
Et puisque nos pères selon la chair nous ont châtiés, et que, néanmoins, nous avons eu du respect pour eux, ne serons-nous pas, à bien plus forte raison, soumis au Père des esprits, pour avoir la vie?
10 For they indeed for a few days disciplined us as seemed good to them, but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.
Ceux-là, en effet, nous châtiaient pour un peu de temps, comme ils le trouvaient bon; mais Dieu nous châtie pour notre bien, afin de nous rendre participants de sa sainteté.
11 All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Il est vrai que tout châtiment semble, au premier abord, un sujet de tristesse, et non pas de joie; mais ensuite il produit un fruit de justice et de paix pour ceux qui ont été ainsi exercés.
12 Therefore lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees,
Relevez donc vos mains défaillantes, et vos genoux qui fléchissent.
13 and make straight paths for your feet, so what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.
Dirigez vos pas dans le droit chemin, afin que le pied qui est boiteux, au lieu de se démettre entièrement, soit guéri.
14 Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord,
Recherchez la paix avec tous, et la sanctification, sans laquelle nul ne verra le Seigneur.
15 looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you and many be defiled by it,
Veillez à ce que personne ne se prive de la grâce de Dieu, à ce qu'il ne vienne pas à pousser quelque racine d'amertume qui pourrait entraver et infecter la plupart d'entre vous.
16 lest there be any sexually immoral person or profane person, like Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal.
Veillez à ce qu'il n'y ait parmi vous aucun impur, ni aucun profane comme Ésaü, qui, uniquement pour un plat, vendit son droit d'aînesse.
17 For you know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for a change of mind though he sought it diligently with tears.
Vous savez, en effet, que plus tard, voulant obtenir la bénédiction paternelle, il fut repoussé; car, bien qu'il l'eût demandée avec larmes, il ne put faire changer son père de résolution.
18 For you have not come to a mountain that might be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness, darkness, storm,
Vous ne vous êtes pas approchés d'une montagne qu'on pût toucher, ni du feu ardent, ni de l'obscurité, ni des ténèbres, ni de la tempête,
19 the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which those who heard it begged that not one more word should be spoken to them,
ni de l'éclat de la trompette, ni de la voix qui parlait, voix si redoutable, que ceux qui l'entendirent demandèrent instamment que la parole ne leur fût plus adressée;
20 for they could not stand that which was commanded, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned”.
car ils ne pouvaient supporter cette menace: «Même l'animal qui aura touché cette montagne sera lapidé.»
21 So fearful was the appearance that Moses said, “I am terrified and trembling.”
Et le spectacle était si terrible, que Moïse dit: «Je suis épouvanté et tout tremblant.»
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable multitudes of angels,
Mais vous vous êtes approchés de la montagne de Sion, de la cité du Dieu vivant, la Jérusalem céleste, des myriades qui forment l'assemblée des anges,
23 to the festal gathering and assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,
de l'Église des premiers-nés inscrits dans les cieux, de Dieu, le juge de tous, des esprits des justes parvenus à la perfection,
24 to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better than that of Abel.
de Jésus, le médiateur de la nouvelle alliance, et du sang de l'aspersion, qui proclame de meilleures choses que celui d'Abel.
25 See that you don’t refuse him who speaks. For if they didn’t escape when they refused him who warned on the earth, how much more will we not escape who turn away from him who warns from heaven,
Gardez-vous de repousser Celui qui vous parle; car si ceux-là n'ont pas échappé au châtiment, pour avoir repoussé Celui qui se révélait sur la terre, à plus forte raison n'échapperons-nous pas, si nous le repoussons quand il parle du haut des cieux.
26 whose voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens.”
Lui dont la voix ébranla alors la terre, et qui maintenant fait cette déclaration: «J'ébranlerai encore une fois non seulement la terre, mais aussi le ciel.»
27 This phrase, “Yet once more” signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.
Or, ces mots: «encore une fois» indiquent la transformation des choses qui, par cela même qu'elles ont été créées, seront un jour ébranlées, afin que subsiste ce qui est inébranlable.
28 Therefore, receiving a Kingdom that can’t be shaken, let’s have grace, through which we serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe,
Ainsi, puisque nous avons en partage un royaume inébranlable, gardons fidèlement la grâce afin de servir Dieu d'une manière qui lui soit agréable, avec respect et avec crainte;
29 for our God is a consuming fire.
car notre Dieu est aussi un feu consumant.
