Hebrews 11
1 Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.
Είναι δε η πίστις ελπιζομένων πεποίθησις, βεβαίωσις πραγμάτων μη βλεπομένων.
2 For by this, the elders obtained approval.
Διότι διά ταύτης έλαβον καλήν μαρτυρίαν οι πρεσβύτεροι.
3 By faith we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible. (aiōn g165)
Διά πίστεως εννοούμεν ότι οι αιώνες εκτίθησαν με τον λόγον του Θεού, ώστε τα βλεπόμενα δεν έγειναν εκ φαινομένων. (aiōn g165)
4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had testimony given to him that he was righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and through it he, being dead, still speaks.
Διά πίστεως ο Άβελ προσέφερε προς τον Θεόν καλητέραν θυσίαν παρά τον Κάϊν, διά της οποίας εμαρτυρήθη ότι ήτο δίκαιος, επειδή ο Θεός έδωκε μαρτυρίαν περί των δώρων αυτού, και δι' αυτής καίτοι αποθανών έτι λαλεί.
5 By faith Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God.
Διά πίστεως μετετέθη ο Ενώχ, διά να μη ίδη θάνατον, και δεν ευρίσκετο, διότι μετέθεσεν αυτόν ο Θεός· επειδή προ της μεταθέσεως αυτού εμαρτυρήθη ότι ευηρέστησεν εις τον Θεόν·
6 Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.
χωρίς δε πίστεως αδύνατον είναι να ευαρεστήση τις εις αυτόν· διότι ο προσερχόμενος εις τον Θεόν πρέπει να πιστεύη ότι είναι και γίνεται μισθαποδότης εις τους εκζητούντας αυτόν.
7 By faith Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared a ship for the saving of his house, through which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
Διά πίστεως ο Νώε, ειδοποιηθείς θεόθεν περί των μη βλεπομένων έτι, εφοβήθη και κατεσκεύασε κιβωτόν προς σωτηρίαν του οίκου αυτού, δι' ης κατέκρινε τον κόσμον και έγεινε κληρονόμος της διά πίστεως δικαιοσύνης.
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.
Διά πίστεως υπήκουσεν ο Αβραάμ, ότε εκαλείτο να εξέλθη εις τον τόπον τον οποίον έμελλε να λάβη εις κληρονομίαν, και εξήλθε μη εξεύρων που υπάγει.
9 By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.
Διά πίστεως παρώκησεν εις την γην της επαγγελίας ως ξένην, κατοικήσας εν σκηναίς μετά Ισαάκ και Ιακώβ των συγκληρονόμων της αυτής επαγγελίας·
10 For he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
διότι περιέμενε την πόλιν την έχουσαν τα θεμέλια, της οποίας τεχνίτης και δημιουργός είναι ο Θεός.
11 By faith even Sarah herself received power to conceive, and she bore a child when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised.
Διά πίστεως και αυτή η Σάρρα έλαβε δύναμιν εις το να συλλάβη σπέρμα και παρά καιρόν ηλικίας εγέννησεν, επειδή εστοχάσθη πιστόν τον υποσχεθέντα.
12 Therefore as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as innumerable as the sand which is by the sea shore, were fathered by one man, and him as good as dead.
Διά τούτο και εξ ενός, μάλιστα νενεκρωμένου, εγεννήθησαν καθώς τα άστρα του ουρανού κατά το πλήθος, και ως η άμμος η παρά το χείλος της θαλάσσης, ήτις δεν δύναται να αριθμηθή.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and embraced them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Εν πίστει απέθανον ούτοι πάντες, μη λαβόντες τας επαγγελίας, αλλά μακρόθεν ιδόντες αυτάς και πεισθέντες και εγκολπωθέντες και ομολογήσαντες ότι είναι ξένοι και παρεπίδημοι επί της γης.
14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.
Διότι οι λέγοντες τοιαύτα δεικνύουσιν ότι ζητούσι πατρίδα.
15 If indeed they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had enough time to return.
Και εάν μεν ενεθυμούντο εκείνην, εξ ης εξήλθον, ήθελον ευρεί καιρόν να επιστρέψωσι·
16 But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
τώρα όμως επιθυμούσι καλητέραν, τουτέστιν επουράνιον. Διά τούτο ο Θεός δεν επαισχύνεται αυτούς να λέγηται Θεός αυτών, διότι ητοίμασε δι' αυτούς πόλιν.
17 By faith, Abraham, being tested, offered up Isaac. Yes, he who had gladly received the promises was offering up his only born son,
Διά πίστεως ο Αβραάμ, ότε εδοκιμάζετο, προσέφερε τον Ισαάκ, και τον μονογενή αυτού προσέφερεν εκείνος όστις ανεδέχθη τας επαγγελίας,
18 to whom it was said, “Your offspring will be accounted as from Isaac,”
προς τον οποίον ελαλήθη ότι εν Ισαάκ θέλει κληθή εις σε σπέρμα,
19 concluding that God is able to raise up even from the dead. Figuratively speaking, he also did receive him back from the dead.
συλλογισθείς ότι ο Θεός δύναται και εκ νεκρών να ανεγείρη· εξ ων και έλαβεν αυτόν οπίσω παραβολικώς.
20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even concerning things to come.
Διά πίστεως ο Ισαάκ ηυλόγησε τον Ιακώβ και τον Ησαύ περί των μελλόντων.
21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.
Διά πίστεως ο Ιακώβ αποθνήσκων ηυλόγησεν έκαστον των υιών του Ιωσήφ και προσεκύνησεν επιστηριζόμενος επί το άκρον της ράβδου αυτού.
22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.
Διά πίστεως ο Ιωσήφ αποθνήσκων προανήγγειλε περί της εξόδου των υιών Ισραήλ και παρήγγειλε περί των οστέων αυτού.
23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.
Διά πίστεως ο Μωϋσής, αφού εγεννήθη, εκρύφθη τρεις μήνας υπό των γονέων αυτού, διότι είδον κεχαριτωμένον το παιδίον, και δεν εφοβήθησαν το διάταγμα του βασιλέως.
24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,
Διά πίστεως ο Μωϋσής, αφού εμεγάλωσεν, ηρνήθη να λέγηται υιός της θυγατρός του Φαραώ,
25 choosing rather to share ill treatment with God’s people than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a time,
προκρίνας μάλλον να κακουχήται με τον λαόν του Θεού παρά να έχη πρόσκαιρον απόλαυσιν αμαρτίας,
26 considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the reward.
κρίνας τον υπέρ του Χριστού ονειδισμόν μεγαλήτερον πλούτον παρά τους εν Αιγύπτω θησαυρούς· διότι απέβλεπεν εις την μισθαποδοσίαν.
27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
Διά πίστεως αφήκε την Αίγυπτον, μη φοβηθείς τον θυμόν του βασιλέως· διότι ως βλέπων τον αόρατον ενεκαρτέρησε.
28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them.
Διά πίστεως έκαμε το πάσχα και την πρόσχυσιν του αίματος, διά να μη εγγίση αυτούς ο εξολοθρεύων τα πρωτότοκα.
29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land. When the Egyptians tried to do so, they were swallowed up.
Διά πίστεως διέβησαν την Ερυθράν θάλασσαν ως διά ξηράς, την οποίαν δοκιμάσαντες οι Αιγύπτιοι κατεποντίσθησαν.
30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.
Διά πίστεως έπεσον τα τείχη της Ιεριχώ, αφού εκυκλώθησαν επί επτά ημέρας.
31 By faith Rahab the prostitute didn’t perish with those who were disobedient, having received the spies in peace.
Διά πίστεως η πόρνη Ραάβ δεν συναπωλέσθη με τους απειθήσαντας, δεχθείσα τους κατασκόπους με ειρήνην.
32 What more shall I say? For the time would fail me if I told of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets—
Και τι έτι να λέγω; Διότι θέλει με λείψει ο καιρός διηγούμενον περί Γεδεών, Βαράκ τε και Σαμψών και Ιεφθάε, Δαβίδ τε και Σαμουήλ και των προφητών,
33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked out righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
οίτινες διά της πίστεως κατεπολέμησαν βασιλείας, ειργάσθησαν δικαιοσύνην, επέτυχον τας επαγγελίας, έφραξαν στόματα λεόντων,
34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, grew mighty in war, and caused foreign armies to flee.
έσβεσαν δύναμιν πυρός, έφυγον στόματα μαχαίρας, ενεδυναμώθησαν από ασθενείας, έγειναν ισχυροί εν πολέμω, έτρεψαν εις φυγήν στρατεύματα αλλοτρίων.
35 Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, not accepting their deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
Έλαβον γυναίκες τους νεκρούς αυτών αναστηθέντας· άλλοι δε εβασανίσθησαν, μη δεχθέντες την απολύτρωσιν, διά να αξιωθώσι καλητέρας αναστάσεως·
36 Others were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment.
άλλοι δε εδοκίμασαν εμπαιγμούς και μάστιγας, έτι δε και δεσμά και φυλακήν·
37 They were stoned. They were sawn apart. They were tempted. They were slain with the sword. They went around in sheep skins and in goat skins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated—
ελιθοβολήθησαν, επριονίσθησαν, επειράσθησαν, με σφαγήν μαχαίρας απέθανον, περιεπλανήθησαν με δέρματα προβάτων, με δέρματα αιγών· υστερούμενοι, θλιβόμενοι, κακουχούμενοι,
38 of whom the world was not worthy—wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, and the holes of the earth.
των οποίων δεν ήτο άξιος ο κόσμος, πλανώμενοι εν ερημίαις και όρεσι και σπηλαίοις και ταις τρύπαις της γης.
39 These all, having been commended for their faith, didn’t receive the promise,
Και ούτοι πάντες αν και έλαβον καλήν μαρτυρίαν διά της πίστεως, δεν απήλαυσαν την επαγγελίαν,
40 God having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
διότι ο Θεός προέβλεψε καλύτερόν τι περί ημών, διά να μη λάβωσι την τελειότητα χωρίς ημών.
