1 Now in the days of Ahasuerus (this is Ahasuerus who reigned from India even to Ethiopia, over one hundred twenty-seven provinces),
Những sự kiện này xảy ra vào thời Vua A-suê-ru. Vua thống trị trên 127 tỉnh trải dài từ Ấn Độ đến Ê-thi-ô-pi.
2 in those days, when the King Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Susa the palace,
Vào năm thứ ba đời vua A-suê-ru trị vì, tại kinh đô Su-sa,
3 in the third year of his reign, he made a feast for all his princes and his servants; the army of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces being before him.
vua cho mở yến tiệc thết đãi các thượng quan, triều thần, tướng lãnh, và tổng trấn của cả đế quốc. Các tư lệnh quân đội Ba Tư và Mê-đi, các nhà quý tộc cùng các quan đầu tỉnh đều được mời.
4 He displayed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent majesty many days, even one hundred eighty days.
Đây là dịp vua phô trương sự giàu có, vinh quang của đế quốc, cùng uy nghi, vinh dự của mình. Yến tiệc kéo dài suốt 180 ngày.
5 When these days were fulfilled, the king made a seven day feast for all the people who were present in Susa the palace, both great and small, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace.
Tiếp theo đó, vua lại mở tiệc khoản đãi toàn thể người dân kinh đô Su-sa, cả lớn lẫn nhỏ, tại sân vườn ngự uyển trong bảy ngày.
6 There were hangings of white and blue material, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and marble pillars. The couches were of gold and silver, on a pavement of red, white, yellow, and black marble.
Chung quanh vườn giăng màn trắng và xanh, với băng lụa tím buộc vào các vòng bạc đính trên trụ cẩm thạch. Những chiếc trường kỷ bằng vàng và bạc đặt trên nền lát cẩm thạch đủ màu, đen, đỏ, trắng, vàng.
7 They gave them drinks in golden vessels of various kinds, including royal wine in abundance, according to the bounty of the king.
Ly uống rượu toàn bằng vàng, gồm nhiều kiểu khác nhau. Rượu thết đãi rất dồi dào theo lòng rộng rãi của vua.
8 In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had instructed all the officials of his house, that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.
Vua ra lệnh cho triều thần cho phép mọi người uống bao nhiêu tùy ý, không giới hạn.
9 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to King Ahasuerus.
Hoàng hậu Vả-thi cũng thết đãi các phụ nữ trong hoàng cung vua A-suê-ru.
10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcass, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
Ngày thứ bảy, khi men rượu làm nhà vua A-suê-ru cao hứng, vua truyền lệnh cho các thái giám Mê-hu-nan, Bích-tha, Hạc-bô-na, Biếc-tha, A-bác-tha, Xê-tha, và Cát-na
11 to bring Vashti the queen before the king wearing the royal crown, to show the people and the princes her beauty; for she was beautiful.
đưa Hoàng hậu Vả-thi, đầu đội vương miện, đến ra mắt vua để mọi người có thể chiêm ngưỡng sắc đẹp của hoàng hậu.
12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by the eunuchs. Therefore the king was very angry, and his anger burned in him.
Nhưng Hoàng hậu Vả-thi không chịu đến theo lệnh vua do các thái giám chuyển đạt. Điều này làm vua vô cùng tức giận.
13 Then the king said to the wise men, who knew the times (for it was the king’s custom to consult those who knew law and judgment;
Vua liền hội ý với các học sĩ hiểu biết thời vận, vì vua có lệ tham khảo ý kiến những người thông thạo pháp luật.
14 and next to him were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king’s face, and sat first in the kingdom),
Tên của những người này là: Cát-sê-na, Sê-thát, Át-ma-tha, Ta-rê-si, Mê-ra, Mát-sê-na, và Mê-mu-can. Họ là những người lịch lãm, thông thạo pháp luật và đứng đầu việc hành chính trong nước.
15 “What shall we do to Queen Vashti according to law, because she has not done the bidding of the King Ahasuerus by the eunuchs?”
Vua hỏi: “Hoàng hậu Vả-thi không vâng lệnh ta, do các thái giám chuyển đạt, vậy chiếu theo luật pháp, chúng ta phải xét xử thế nào?”
16 Memucan answered before the king and the princes, “Vashti the queen has not done wrong to just the king, but also to all the princes, and to all the people who are in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus.
Thay mặt các thượng thư, Mê-mu-can đáp: “Hoàng hậu Vả-thi chẳng những có lỗi với vua, nhưng với cả các quan văn võ và người dân toàn cõi đế quốc.
17 For this deed of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to show contempt for their husbands when it is reported, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she didn’t come.’
Một khi phụ nữ khắp nơi hay biết việc này, họ sẽ không vâng phục chồng lấy cớ rằng: Hoàng hậu Vả-thi đã không tuân lệnh Vua A-suê-ru.
18 Today, the princesses of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s deed will tell all the king’s princes. This will cause much contempt and wrath.
Ngày hôm nay, các bà vợ của thượng quan chúng tôi trong đế quốc Ba Tư và Mê-đi sẽ nghe về hành động của hoàng hậu, cũng sẽ đối xử với chồng, là các thượng quan của vua theo cách ấy, rồi nhà nào cũng sẽ dẫy đầy sự khinh bỉ và xào xáo.
19 “If it pleases the king, let a royal commandment go from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it cannot be altered, that Vashti may never again come before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate to another who is better than she.
Nếu vua đẹp ý, chúng tôi xin vua ra sắc lệnh, chép thành đạo luật bất di bất dịch của người Ba Tư và Mê-đi, cấm Hoàng hậu Vả-thi không được đến ra mắt vua nữa, và sẽ chọn hoàng hậu khác xứng đáng hơn.
20 When the king’s decree which he shall make is published throughout all his kingdom (for it is great), all the wives will give their husbands honor, both great and small.”
Khi sắc lệnh này được công bố ra khắp đế quốc rộng lớn của vua, mọi người vợ đều sẽ kính phục chồng, bất luận cao sang hay nghèo hèn.”
21 This advice pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
Lời bàn này được vua và quần thần chấp thuận. Vua thực hiện mọi việc đúng theo lời đề nghị của Mê-mu-can,
22 for he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language, that every man should rule his own house, speaking in the language of his own people.
gửi sắc lệnh đến khắp các tỉnh, theo ngôn ngữ từng địa phương, chỉ thị người đàn ông phải nắm quyền làm chủ gia đình mình.
