Ecclesiastes 7
1 A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one’s birth.
Besser ist ein guter Name als kostbares Salböl, und besser der Todestag als der Geburtstag. –
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart.
Besser ist es, in ein Trauerhaus zu gehen, als zu einem fröhlichen Gastmahl; denn jenes weist auf das Ende aller Menschen hin, und wer noch im Leben steht, möge sich das zu Herzen nehmen!
3 Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good.
Besser Unmut als Lachen; denn bei ernstem Angesicht steht es gut um das Herz.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
Das Herz der Weisen weilt im Trauerhause, aber das Herz der Toren im Hause der Freude. –
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than for a man to hear the song of fools.
Besser ist es, auf das Schelten eines Weisen zu hören, als daß man die Lieder der Toren anhört;
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.
denn wie das Knistern des Reisigs unter dem Kessel, so ist das Lachen des Toren. Auch das ist nichtig. –
7 Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding.
Denn unredlicher Gewinn macht den Weisen zum Toren, und Bestechungsgeschenke verderben das Herz. –
8 Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
Besser ist der Ausgang einer Sache als ihr Anfang, besser Langmut als Hochmut.
9 Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.
Übereile dich nicht, in ärgerliche Stimmung zu geraten; denn der Ärger hat seine Wohnung im Busen der Toren. –
10 Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this.
Frage nicht, wie es komme, daß die früheren Zeiten besser waren als die jetzigen; denn nicht die Weisheit gibt dir diese Frage ein.
11 Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun.
Weisheit ist so gut wie ein Erbbesitz, und Einsicht ein Gewinn für die, welche das Sonnenlicht sehen;
12 For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.
denn im Schatten der Weisheit ist man ebenso geborgen wie im Schatten des Geldes; aber der Vorzug der Erkenntnis besteht darin, daß die Weisheit ihrem Besitzer das Leben erhält. –
13 Consider the work of God, for who can make that straight which he has made crooked?
Betrachte das Walten Gottes; denn wer kann etwas gerade machen, was er gekrümmt hat?
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything after him.
Am guten Tage sei guter Dinge, und am bösen Tage, da erwäge: auch diesen hat Gott ebenso wie jenen gemacht, damit der Mensch nicht ausfindig mache, was nach ihm geschieht.
15 All this I have seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing.
Alles (beides) habe ich in den Tagen meines eitlen (Erdenlebens) gesehen: mancher Gerechte geht trotz seiner Gerechtigkeit zugrunde, und mancher Gottlose bringt es trotz seiner Bosheit zu langem Leben.
16 Don’t be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself?
Verhalte dich nicht allzu gerecht und gebärde dich nicht übertrieben weise: warum willst du selbst Schaden nehmen?
17 Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time?
Handle aber auch nicht allzu gottlos und zu töricht: warum willst du vor der Zeit sterben?
18 It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also don’t withdraw your hand from that; for he who fears God will come out of them all.
Es ist am besten, wenn du an dem einen festhältst und auch das andere nicht fahren läßt; denn der Gottesfürchtige entgeht allem beidem. –
19 Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.
Die Weisheit verleiht dem Weisen mehr Kraft als zehn Machthaber, die in der Stadt sind.
20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and doesn’t sin.
Denn kein Mensch auf Erden ist so gerecht, daß er nur Gutes täte und niemals sündigte.
21 Also don’t take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you;
Gib auch nicht auf alles Gerede acht, das man führt; du könntest sonst einmal deinen eigenen Knecht dich schmähen hören;
22 for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others.
denn gar manchmal – du wirst dir dessen wohl bewußt sein – hast du selbst andere geschmäht.
23 All this I have proved in wisdom. I said, “I will be wise;” but it was far from me.
Alles dies habe ich mit der Weisheit erprobt; ich dachte: »Ich will die Weisheit gewinnen!«, doch sie blieb fern von mir.
24 That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out?
In weiter Ferne liegt der Grund aller Dinge und tief, ja tief verborgen: wer kann ihn ausfindig machen?
25 I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness.
Immer wieder, wenn ich mich dazu wandte und mein Streben darauf richtete, Erkenntnis und ein richtiges Urteil zu gewinnen und mit dem Suchen nach Weisheit zu einem Abschluß zu kommen und einzusehen, daß die Gottlosigkeit Torheit ist und die Torheit Wahnsinn,
26 I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her.
da fand ich etwas, das bitterer ist als der Tod, nämlich das Weib, das einem Fangnetz gleicht und dessen Herz Schlingen, dessen Arme Fesseln sind. Wer Gott wohlgefällt, der entgeht ihr, doch wer sündigt, wird von ihr gefangen.
27 “Behold, I have found this,” says the Preacher, “to one another, to find an explanation
»Siehe, dies habe ich gefunden«, sagt der Prediger, »indem ich eine Erfahrung zu der andern fügte, um ein sicheres Urteil zu gewinnen;
28 which my soul still seeks, but I have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all those.
was aber meine Seele immer noch sucht und was ich nicht gefunden habe, ist dies: Unter tausend habe ich wohl einen Mann gefunden, aber ein Weib habe ich unter ihnen allen nicht gefunden.
29 Behold, I have only found this: that God made mankind upright; but they search for many inventions.”
Allerdings, wisse wohl: dies habe ich gefunden, daß Gott die Menschen gerade geschaffen hat; sie selbst aber suchen viele verwerfliche Künste.«
