Acts 28
1 When we had escaped, then they learned that the island was called Malta.
Lorsque nous nous fûmes échappés, ils apprirent alors que l'île s'appelait Malte.
2 The natives showed us uncommon kindness; for they kindled a fire and received us all, because of the present rain and because of the cold.
Les indigènes nous témoignèrent une bonté peu commune, car ils allumèrent un feu et nous reçurent tous, à cause de la pluie qui tombait et du froid.
3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand.
Mais lorsque Paul eut rassemblé un paquet de brindilles qu'il mit sur le feu, une vipère sortit à cause de la chaleur et s'attacha à sa main.
4 When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped from the sea, yet Justice has not allowed to live.”
Lorsque les indigènes virent la créature suspendue à sa main, ils se dirent les uns aux autres: « Sans doute cet homme est-il un meurtrier, à qui, bien qu'il ait échappé à la mer, la Justice n'a pas permis de vivre. »
5 However he shook off the creature into the fire, and wasn’t harmed.
Cependant il secoua la créature dans le feu, et ne fut pas blessé.
6 But they expected that he would have swollen or fallen down dead suddenly, but when they watched for a long time and saw nothing bad happen to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.
Ils s'attendaient à ce qu'il se soit enflé ou qu'il soit tombé mort subitement, mais comme ils regardèrent longtemps et ne virent rien de mal lui arriver, ils changèrent d'avis et dirent que c'était un dieu.
7 Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and courteously entertained us for three days.
Or, dans le voisinage de cet endroit se trouvaient des terres appartenant au chef de l'île, nommé Publius, qui nous reçut et nous entretint courtoisement pendant trois jours.
8 The father of Publius lay sick of fever and dysentery. Paul entered in to him, prayed, and laying his hands on him, healed him.
Le père de Publius était malade de la fièvre et de la dysenterie. Paul entra chez lui, pria, et, après lui avoir imposé les mains, le guérit.
9 Then when this was done, the rest also who had diseases in the island came and were cured.
Lorsque cela fut fait, les autres malades de l'île vinrent aussi et furent guéris.
10 They also honored us with many honors; and when we sailed, they put on board the things that we needed.
Ils nous rendirent aussi beaucoup d'honneurs, et, lorsque nous fîmes voile, ils mirent à bord les choses dont nous avions besoin.
11 After three months, we set sail in a ship of Alexandria which had wintered in the island, whose figurehead was “The Twin Brothers.”
Au bout de trois mois, nous nous embarquâmes sur un navire d'Alexandrie qui avait hiverné dans l'île, et dont la figure de proue était « Les frères jumeaux. »
12 Touching at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.
Nous abordâmes à Syracuse, où nous restâmes trois jours.
13 From there we circled around and arrived at Rhegium. After one day, a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli,
De là, nous fîmes le tour et arrivâmes à Rhegium. Un jour après, un vent du sud se leva, et le deuxième jour nous arrivâmes à Puteoli,
14 where we found brothers, and were entreated to stay with them for seven days. So we came to Rome.
où nous trouvâmes des frères, et nous fûmes priés de rester avec eux sept jours. Nous arrivâmes donc à Rome.
15 From there the brothers, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.
De là, les frères, ayant entendu parler de nous, vinrent à notre rencontre jusqu'au marché d'Appius et aux trois tavernes. Quand Paul les vit, il rendit grâce à Dieu et prit courage.
16 When we entered into Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him.
Lorsque nous entrâmes dans Rome, le centurion remit les prisonniers au chef des gardes, mais on permit à Paul de rester seul avec le soldat qui le gardait.
17 After three days Paul called together those who were the leaders of the Jews. When they had come together, he said to them, “I, brothers, though I had done nothing against the people or the customs of our fathers, still was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,
Trois jours après, Paul convoqua les chefs des Juifs. Quand ils furent réunis, il leur dit: Moi, frères, bien que je n'aie rien fait contre le peuple ou contre les coutumes de nos pères, j'ai été livré prisonnier de Jérusalem entre les mains des Romains.
18 who, when they had examined me, desired to set me free, because there was no cause of death in me.
Ceux-ci, après m'avoir examiné, voulurent me relâcher, parce qu'il n'y avait en moi aucune cause de mort.
19 But when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything about which to accuse my nation.
Mais, comme les Juifs s'y opposaient, je fus contraint d'en appeler à César, sans avoir rien à reprocher à ma nation.
20 For this cause therefore I asked to see you and to speak with you. For because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.”
C'est pourquoi j'ai demandé à vous voir et à m'entretenir avec vous. Car c'est à cause de l'espérance d'Israël que je suis lié par cette chaîne. »
21 They said to him, “We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor did any of the brothers come here and report or speak any evil of you.
Ils lui dirent: « Nous n'avons pas reçu de lettres de Judée à ton sujet, et aucun des frères n'est venu ici faire un rapport ou dire du mal de toi.
22 But we desire to hear from you what you think. For, as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.”
Mais nous voulons savoir de vous ce que vous pensez. Car, pour ce qui est de cette secte, nous savons que partout on la dénonce. »
23 When they had appointed him a day, many people came to him at his lodging. He explained to them, testifying about God’s Kingdom, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning until evening.
Lorsqu'on lui eut fixé un jour, beaucoup de gens vinrent le trouver dans son logement. Il leur donnait des explications, témoignait du royaume de Dieu et les persuadait au sujet de Jésus, d'après la loi de Moïse et les prophètes, depuis le matin jusqu'au soir.
24 Some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.
Les uns croyaient aux choses qui étaient dites, et les autres n'y croyaient pas.
25 When they didn’t agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had spoken one message: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,
Comme ils n'étaient pas d'accord entre eux, ils s'en allèrent, après que Paul eut prononcé un seul message: « Le Saint-Esprit a parlé à juste titre à nos pères par le prophète Ésaïe,
26 saying, ‘Go to this people and say, in hearing, you will hear, but will in no way understand. In seeing, you will see, but will in no way perceive.
en disant, Va vers ce peuple et dis-lui, en entendant, vous entendrez, mais ne comprendront en aucun cas. En voyant, vous verrez, mais qu'il ne percevra en aucun cas.
27 For this people’s heart has grown callous. Their ears are dull of hearing. Their eyes they have closed. Lest they should see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and would turn again, then I would heal them.’
Car le cœur de ce peuple est devenu insensible. Leurs oreilles sont sourdes. Ils ont fermé les yeux. De peur qu'ils ne voient avec leurs yeux, entendent avec leurs oreilles, comprennent avec leur cœur, et se tournerait à nouveau, alors je les guérirai.
28 “Be it known therefore to you that the salvation of God is sent to the nations, and they will listen.”
« Sachez donc que le salut de Dieu est envoyé aux nations, et qu'elles écouteront. »
29 When he had said these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves.
Après qu'il eut dit ces mots, les Juifs s'en allèrent, ayant une grande dispute entre eux.
30 Paul stayed two whole years in his own rented house and received all who were coming to him,
Paul resta deux années entières dans la maison qu'il louait et reçut tous ceux qui venaient à lui,
31 preaching God’s Kingdom and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance.
prêchant le royaume de Dieu et enseignant ce qui concerne le Seigneur Jésus-Christ, en toute hardiesse et sans obstacle.
