Acts 23
1 Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
Ατενίσας δε ο Παύλος εις το συνέδριον, είπεν· Άνδρες αδελφοί, εγώ έζησα ενώπιον του Θεού μετά πάσης καλής συνειδήσεως μέχρι ταύτης της ημέρας.
2 The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
Ο δε αρχιερεύς Ανανίας προσέταξε τους παρεστώτας πλησίον αυτού να κτυπήσωσι το στόμα αυτού.
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
Τότε ο Παύλος είπε προς αυτόν· Ο Θεός μέλλει να σε κτυπήση, τοίχε ασβεστωμένε· και συ κάθησαι να με κρίνης κατά τον νόμον, και παρανομών προστάζεις να με κτυπώσιν;
4 Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
Οι δε παρεστώτες είπον· Τον αρχιερέα του Θεού λοιδορείς;
5 Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
Και ο Παύλος είπε· Δεν ήξευρον, αδελφοί, ότι είναι αρχιερεύς· διότι είναι γεγραμμένον. Άρχοντα του λαού σου δεν θέλεις κακολογήσει.
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
Εννοήσας δε ο Παύλος ότι το εν μέρος είναι Σαδδουκαίων, το δε άλλο Φαρισαίων, έκραξεν εν τω συνεδρίω. Άνδρες αδελφοί, εγώ είμαι Φαρισαίος, υιός Φαρισαίου· περί ελπίδος και αναστάσεως νεκρών εγώ κρίνομαι.
7 When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
Και ότε ελάλησε τούτο, έγεινε διαίρεσις των Φαρισαίων και των Σαδδουκαίων, και διηρέθη το πλήθος.
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
Διότι οι μεν Σαδδουκαίοι λέγουσιν ότι δεν είναι ανάστασις ουδέ άγγελος ουδέ πνεύμα, οι δε Φαρισαίοι ομολογούσιν αμφότερα.
9 A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
Και έγεινε κραυγή μεγάλη, και σηκωθέντες οι γραμματείς του μέρους των Φαρισαίων διεμάχοντο, λέγοντες· Ουδέν κακόν ευρίσκομεν εν τω ανθρώπω τούτω· αν δε ελάλησε προς αυτόν πνεύμα ή άγγελος, ας μη θεομαχώμεν.
10 When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
Και επειδή έγεινε μεγάλη διαίρεσις, φοβηθείς ο χιλίαρχος μη διασπαραχθή ο Παύλος υπ' αυτών, προσέταξε να καταβή το στράτευμα και να αρπάση αυτόν εκ μέσου αυτών και να φέρη εις το φρούριον.
11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
Την δε ερχομένην νύκτα επιφανείς εις αυτόν ο Κύριος, είπε· Θάρρει, Παύλε, διότι καθώς εμαρτύρησας τα περί εμού εις Ιερουσαλήμ, ούτω πρέπει να μαρτυρήσης και εις Ρώμην.
12 When it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
Και ότε έγεινεν ημέρα, τινές των Ιουδαίων συνομώσαντες ανεθεμάτισαν εαυτούς, λέγοντες μήτε να φάγωσι μήτε να πίωσιν, εωσού φονεύσωσι τον Παύλον·
13 There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
ήσαν δε πλειότεροι των τεσσαράκοντα οι πράξαντες την συνωμοσίαν ταύτην·
14 They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
οίτινες ελθόντες προς τους αρχιερείς και τους πρεσβυτέρους, είπον· Με ανάθεμα ανεθεματίσαμεν εαυτούς, να μη γευθώμεν μηδέν εωσού φονεύσωμεν τον Παύλον.
15 Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
Τώρα λοιπόν σεις μετά του συνεδρίου μηνύσατε προς τον χιλίαρχον, να καταβιβάση αυτόν αύριον προς εσάς, ως μέλλοντας να μάθητε ακριβέστερον τα περί αυτού· ημείς δε, πριν αυτός πλησιάση, είμεθα έτοιμοι να φονεύσωμεν αυτόν.
16 But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
Ακούσας δε την ενέδραν ο υιός της αδελφής του Παύλου, υπήγε και εισελθών εις το φρούριον απήγγειλε προς τον Παύλον.
17 Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
Και ο Παύλος προσκαλέσας ένα των εκατοντάρχων, είπε· Φέρε τον νέον τούτον προς τον χιλίαρχον· διότι έχει τι να απαγγείλη προς αυτόν.
18 So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
Εκείνος λοιπόν παραλαβών αυτόν, έφερε προς τον χιλίαρχον και λέγει· Ο δέσμιος Παύλος με έκραξε και με παρεκάλεσε να φέρω τον νέον τούτον προς σε, διότι έχει τι να σοι λαλήση.
19 The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
Πιάσας δε αυτόν από της χειρός ο χιλίαρχος και αποσυρθείς κατ' ιδίαν, ηρώτησε, Τι είναι εκείνο, το οποίον έχεις να μοι απαγγείλης;
20 He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
Ο δε είπεν ότι οι Ιουδαίοι συνεφώνησαν να σε παρακαλέσωσι να καταβιβάσης αύριον τον Παύλον εις το συνέδριον, ως θέλοντες να μάθωσι τι ακριβέστερον περί αυτού.
21 Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
Συ λοιπόν μη πεισθής εις αυτούς, διότι ενεδρεύουσιν αυτόν πλειότεροι των τεσσαράκοντα άνδρες εξ αυτών, οίτινες ανεθεμάτισαν εαυτούς μήτε να φάγωσι μήτε να πίωσιν, εωσού φονεύσωσιν αυτόν· και τώρα είναι έτοιμοι, προσμένοντες την παρά σου υπόσχεσιν.
22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
Ο χιλίαρχος λοιπόν απέλυσε τον νέον, παραγγείλας, Να μη είπης εις μηδένα ότι εφανέρωσας ταύτα εις εμέ.
23 He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
Και προσκαλέσας δύο τινάς των εκατοντάρχων, είπεν· Ετοιμάσατε διακοσίους στρατιώτας διά να υπάγωσιν έως Καισαρείας, και εβδομήκοντα ιππείς και διακοσίους λογχοφόρους, από τρίτης ώρας της νυκτός,
24 He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
ετοιμάσατε και ζώα, διά να επικαθίσωσι τον Παύλον και φέρωσιν ασφαλώς προς Φήλικα τον ηγεμόνα·
25 He wrote a letter like this:
και έγραψεν επιστολήν περιέχουσαν τον τύπον τούτον·
26 “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
Κλαύδιος Λυσίας προς τον κράτιστον ηγεμόνα Φήλικα, χαίρειν.
27 “This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
Τον άνδρα τούτον, συλληφθέντα υπό των Ιουδαίων και μέλλοντα να φονευθή υπ' αυτών, επελθών μετά του στρατεύματος έσωσα αυτόν, μαθών ότι είναι Ρωμαίος.
28 Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
Θέλων δε να μάθω αιτίαν, διά την οποίαν εκατηγόρουν αυτόν, κατεβίβασα αυτόν εις το συνέδριον αυτών·
29 I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
και εύρον αυτόν εγκαλούμενον περί ζητημάτων του νόμου αυτών, μη έχοντα όμως μηδέν έγκλημα άξιον θανάτου ή δεσμών.
30 When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
Και επειδή εμηνύθη προς εμέ ότι μέλλει να γείνη εις τον άνθρωπον επιβουλή υπό των Ιουδαίων, ευθύς έπεμψα αυτόν προς σε, παραγγείλας και εις τους κατηγόρους να είπωσιν ενώπιον σου τα κατ' αυτού. Υγίαινε.
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
Οι μεν λοιπόν στρατιώται κατά την δοθείσαν εις αυτούς προσταγήν αναλαβόντες τον Παύλον, έφεραν διά της νυκτός εις την Αντιπατρίδα,
32 But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
την δε επαύριον, αφήσαντες τους ιππείς να υπάγωσι μετ' αυτού, υπέστρεψαν εις το φρούριον·
33 When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
οίτινες εισελθόντες εις την Καισάρειαν και εγχειρίσαντες την επιστολήν εις τον ηγεμόνα, παρέστησαν και τον Παύλον εις αυτόν.
34 When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
Ο δε ηγεμών, αφού ανέγνωσε την επιστολήν και ηρώτησεν εκ ποίας επαρχίας είναι και ήκουσεν ότι είναι από Κιλικίας,
35 “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
Θέλω σε ακροασθή, είπεν, όταν και οι κατήγοροί σου έλθωσι· και προσέταξε να φυλάττηται εν τω πραιτωρίω του Ηρώδου.
