Acts 22

1 “Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make to you.”

"Ihr Brüder und Väter! Vernehmt, wie ich mich vor euch verteidige."

2 When they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they were even more quiet. He said,

Als sie hörten, daß er hebräisch zu ihnen sprach, wurden sie noch ruhiger.

3 “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today.

Er fuhr fort: "Ich bin ein Jude, zu Tarsus in Cilizien geboren, hier in dieser Stadt erzogen zu den Füßen Gamaliels, streng nach dem väterlichen Gesetz unterrichtet. Ich war ein Eiferer für Gott, so wie ihr es alle heute seid.

4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,

Als solcher verfolgte ich diese Lehre bis auf den Tod und legte Männer und Frauen in Fesseln und brachte sie ins Gefängnis.

5 as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

Das kann der Hohepriester und der ganze Rat der Ältesten mir bezeugen. Von ihnen erhielt ich Briefe an die Brüder in Damaskus und zog dorthin, um auch jene, die sich dort befanden, gefesselt nach Jerusalem zu führen, damit sie gestraft würden.

6 “As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky.

Als ich dahinzog und mich Damaskus näherte, umstrahlte mich plötzlich zur Mittagszeit vom Himmel her ein grelles Licht.

7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

Ich stürzte zu Boden und hörte eine Stimme, die mir zurief: 'Saul, Saul, warum verfolgst du mich?'

8 I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’

Ich erwiderte: 'Wer bist du, Herr?' Er sprach zu mir: 'Ich bin Jesus von Nazareth, den du verfolgst.'

9 “Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me.

Meine Begleiter sahen zwar das Licht, doch hörten sie die Stimme nicht, die mit mir sprach.

10 I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’

Ich fragte weiter: 'Was soll ich tun, o Herr?' Da sprach der Herr zu mir: 'Steh auf und geh nach Damaskus, und dort wird man dir alles sagen, was du tun sollst.'

11 When I couldn’t see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

Da ich nicht mehr sehen konnte wegen jenes Lichtglanzes, führten mich die Begleiter an der Hand, und also kam ich nach Damaskus.

12 “One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,

Und ein gesetzestreuer Mann mit Namen Ananias, der bei allen Juden, die dort wohnen, in gutem Rufe stand, kam zu mir,

13 came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him.

trat herzu und sprach zu mir: 'Bruder Saul, blicke auf!' Im selben Augenblick sah ich ihn.

14 He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

Dann fuhr er fort: 'Der Gott unserer Väter hat dich dazu bestimmt, daß du seinen Willen erkennst und den Gerechten schauest und die Stimme seines Mundes vernehmest;

15 For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.

du sollst ihm Zeuge sein vor allen Menschen von dem, was du gesehen und vernommen hast.

16 Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

Und nun, was zögerst du noch? Steh auf, laß dich taufen und dich von deinen Sünden waschen, nachdem du seinen Namen angerufen hast.'

17 “When I had returned to Jerusalem and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance

Als ich mich nach Jerusalem zurückbegeben hatte und im Tempel betete, geriet ich in Verzückung.

18 and saw him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive testimony concerning me from you.’

Ich sah ihn, und er sprach zu mir: 'Verlasse eilends Jerusalem; sie werden dein Zeugnis über mich nicht annehmen.'

19 I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you.

Ich sprach: 'O Herr, sie wissen doch, daß ich es war, der deine Gläubigen ins Gefängnis werfen und in den Synagogen geißeln ließ.

20 When the blood of Stephen, your witness, was shed, I also was standing by, consenting to his death, and guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.’

Als das Blut deines Zeugen Stephanus vergossen ward, da war es wieder ich, der mit Wohlbehagen dabeistand und die Kleider seiner Mörder verwahrte.'

21 “He said to me, ‘Depart, for I will send you out far from here to the Gentiles.’”

Er aber sprach zu mir: 'Zieh fort; ich will dich zu den Heiden in die Ferne senden.'"

22 They listened to him until he said that; then they lifted up their voice and said, “Rid the earth of this fellow, for he isn’t fit to live!”

Bis hierher hatten sie ihm zugehört. Nun aber schrien sie laut: "Weg von der Erde mit einem solchen Menschen. Er darf nicht mehr länger leben."

23 As they cried out, threw off their cloaks, and threw dust into the air,

Als sie so schrien, ihre Kleider von sich warfen und Staub in die Höhe schleuderten,

24 the commanding officer commanded him to be brought into the barracks, ordering him to be examined by scourging, that he might know for what crime they shouted against him like that.

befahl der Befehlshaber, den Paulus in die Burg hinaufzuführen. Zugleich gab er Befehl, ihn unter Anwendung der Folter zu verhören, um herauszubringen, warum sie so gegen ihn tobten.

25 When they had tied him up with thongs, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?”

Schon wollte man ihn in die Riemen spannen, da fragte er den Hauptmann, der dabeistand: "Ist es euch erlaubt, einen römischen Bürger, dazu noch ohne Richterspruch, zu geißeln?"

26 When the centurion heard it, he went to the commanding officer and told him, “Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman!”

Als der Hauptmann das hörte, ging er zum Befehlshaber und meldete ihm: "Was hast du vor? Der Mensch dort ist römischer Bürger."

27 The commanding officer came and asked him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” He said, “Yes.”

Der Befehlshaber trat heran und fragte ihn: "Sage mir: Bist du römischer Bärger?" Er antwortete: "Ja."

28 The commanding officer answered, “I bought my citizenship for a great price.” Paul said, “But I was born a Roman.”

Der Befehlshaber entgegnete: "Ich mußte mir dieses Bürgerrecht um vieles Geld erwerben." Paulus entgegnete: "Ich besitze es schon durch Geburt."

29 Immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him, and the commanding officer also was afraid when he realized that he was a Roman, because he had bound him.

Alsdann stand man davon ab, ihn zu foltern. Der Befehlshaber war sogar in Furcht, da er jetzt wußte, daß er römischer Bürger war und er ihn trotzdem hatte fesseln lassen.

30 But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews, he freed him from the bonds and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.

Er wollte aber doch sicher wissen, weswegen er von den Juden angeklagt sei. Darum ließ er ihm am folgenden Tage die Fesseln abnehmen und berief die Oberpriester und den ganzen Hohen Rat. Dann ließ er Paulus hineinführen und vor sie hinstellen.
