Acts 21
1 When we had departed from them and had set sail, we came with a straight course to Cos, and the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.
Après nous être séparés d'eux avec peine, nous nous embarquâmes, et nous vînmes droit à Cos, le jour suivant à Rhodes, et de là, à Patara.
2 Having found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail.
Il s'y trouvait un navire qui mettait à la voile pour la Phénicie; nous montâmes à son bord et nous partîmes.
3 When we had come in sight of Cyprus, leaving it on the left hand, we sailed to Syria and landed at Tyre, for the ship was there to unload her cargo.
Quand nous fûmes en vue de l'île de Chypre, nous la laissâmes à gauche, poursuivant notre route vers la Syrie, et nous abordâmes à Tyr, parce que le navire devait y laisser son chargement.
4 Having found disciples, we stayed there seven days. These said to Paul through the Spirit that he should not go up to Jerusalem.
Étant allés trouver les disciples, nous restâmes sept jours avec eux. Poussés par l'Esprit, ils disaient à Paul de ne pas monter à Jérusalem.
5 When those days were over, we departed and went on our journey. They all, with wives and children, brought us on our way until we were out of the city. Kneeling down on the beach, we prayed.
Mais, lorsque le temps de notre séjour fut écoulé, nous nous remîmes en route. Ils nous accompagnèrent tous, avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants, jusqu'en dehors de la ville; et, nous étant agenouillés sur le rivage, nous priâmes ensemble.
6 After saying goodbye to each other, we went on board the ship, and they returned home again.
Puis, après avoir fait nos adieux les uns aux autres, nous montâmes nous-mêmes à bord, tandis qu'ils retournaient chez eux.
7 When we had finished the voyage from Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais. We greeted the brothers and stayed with them one day.
Quant à nous, achevant notre voyage par mer, nous nous rendîmes de Tyr à Ptolémaïs; et, après avoir salué les frères, nous passâmes un jour avec eux.
8 On the next day, we who were Paul’s companions departed and came to Caesarea. We entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.
Le lendemain, étant partis de là, nous vînmes à Césarée; et, entrant dans la maison de Philippe l'évangéliste, un des sept diacres, nous demeurâmes chez lui.
9 Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.
Il avait quatre filles, non mariées, qui prophétisaient.
10 As we stayed there some days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.
Nous étions là depuis plusieurs jours, quand arriva de Judée un prophète, nommé Agabus.
11 Coming to us and taking Paul’s belt, he bound his own feet and hands, and said, “The Holy Spirit says: ‘So the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt, and will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”
Étant venu nous voir, il prit la ceinture de Paul, se lia les pieds et les mains, et il dit: Voici ce que déclare le Saint-Esprit: L'homme à qui appartient cette ceinture sera ainsi lié à Jérusalem par les Juifs, et ils le livreront aux mains des Païens.
12 When we heard these things, both we and the people of that place begged him not to go up to Jerusalem.
Lorsque nous eûmes entendu ces paroles, les fidèles de ce lieu et nous, nous priâmes Paul de ne pas monter à Jérusalem.
13 Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”
Mais il répondit: Que faites-vous, en pleurant ainsi et en me brisant le coeur? Car, pour moi, je suis prêt, non seulement à être lié, mais encore à mourir à Jérusalem pour le nom du Seigneur Jésus.
14 When he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, “The Lord’s will be done.”
Comme il ne se laissait pas persuader, nous n'insistâmes pas davantage, et nous dîmes: Que la volonté du Seigneur se fasse!
15 After these days we took up our baggage and went up to Jerusalem.
Après ces jours-là, ayant fait nos préparatifs, nous montâmes à Jérusalem.
16 Some of the disciples from Caesarea also went with us, bringing one Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we would stay.
Quelques disciples de Césarée y vinrent aussi avec nous, et ils nous conduisirent chez un certain Mnason, de Chypre, qui, depuis longtemps, était un disciple, et qui devait nous donner l'hospitalité.
17 When we had come to Jerusalem, the brothers received us gladly.
A notre arrivée à Jérusalem, les frères nous reçurent avec joie.
18 The day following, Paul went in with us to James; and all the elders were present.
Le lendemain, Paul se rendit avec nous chez Jacques; et tous les anciens s'y réunirent.
19 When he had greeted them, he reported one by one the things which God had worked among the Gentiles through his ministry.
Après les avoir salués, Paul raconta en détail ce que Dieu avait fait parmi les Païens par son ministère.
20 They, when they heard it, glorified God. They said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the law.
Quand ils l'eurent entendu, ils glorifièrent Dieu. Puis ils lui dirent: Frère, tu vois combien de milliers de Juifs ont cru; et tous sont zélés pour la loi.
21 They have been informed about you, that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children and not to walk after the customs.
Or, ils ont été informés que tu enseignes à tous les Juifs qui vivent parmi les Païens, de renoncer à Moïse, en leur disant qu'ils ne doivent pas circoncire leurs enfants, ni suivre leurs coutumes.
22 What then? The assembly must certainly meet, for they will hear that you have come.
Qu'y a-t-il donc à faire? Il est certain que la multitude va se rassembler; car on apprendra que tu es arrivé.
23 Therefore do what we tell you. We have four men who have taken a vow.
Fais donc ce que nous allons te dire: Nous avons ici quatre hommes qui ont fait un voeu.
24 Take them and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses for them, that they may shave their heads. Then all will know that there is no truth in the things that they have been informed about you, but that you yourself also walk keeping the law.
Prends-les avec toi; purifie-toi avec eux, et charge-toi de ce qu'ils auront à payer pour se faire raser la tête. Tous sauront qu'il n'y a rien de vrai dans tout ce qu'on a raconté de toi, mais que, toi aussi, tu vis en observateur de la loi.
25 But concerning the Gentiles who believe, we have written our decision that they should observe no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from food offered to idols, from blood, from strangled things, and from sexual immorality.”
Quant aux Païens qui ont cru, nous leur avons écrit ce que nous avions décidé: qu'ils devaient seulement s'abstenir des viandes offertes en sacrifice aux idoles, du sang, des animaux étouffés et de l'impudicité.
26 Then Paul took the men, and the next day purified himself and went with them into the temple, declaring the fulfillment of the days of purification, until the offering was offered for every one of them.
Alors Paul, ayant pris ces hommes avec lui, et s'étant, dès le lendemain, purifié avec eux, entra dans le temple, pour déclarer le jour où la purification serait achevée et l'offrande présentée pour chacun d'eux.
27 When the seven days were almost completed, the Jews from Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the multitude and laid hands on him,
Les sept jours touchaient à leur fin, quand les Juifs d'Asie, ayant vu Paul dans le temple, ameutèrent toute la multitude et mirent la main sur lui,
28 crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches all men everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place. Moreover, he also brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place!”
en criant: Hommes d'Israël, à l'aide! Voici l'homme qui prêche partout, à tout le monde, contre la nation, contre la loi et contre ce lieu; il a même introduit des Grecs dans le temple, et il a profané ce saint lieu!
29 For they had seen Trophimus the Ephesian, with him in the city, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.
En effet, ils avaient vu auparavant Trophime d'Éphèse avec lui dans la ville, et ils croyaient que Paul l'avait introduit dans le temple.
30 All the city was moved and the people ran together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple. Immediately the doors were shut.
Toute la ville fut en émoi, et le peuple accourut en foule. Ayant saisi Paul, ils le traînèrent hors du temple, dont les portes furent aussitôt fermées.
31 As they were trying to kill him, news came up to the commanding officer of the regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.
Comme ils cherchaient à le tuer, le bruit parvint au tribun de la cohorte que tout Jérusalem s'agitait.
32 Immediately he took soldiers and centurions and ran down to them. They, when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, stopped beating Paul.
Immédiatement, il prit avec lui des soldats et des centeniers; et il se hâta de descendre vers eux. A la vue du tribun et des soldats, ils cessèrent de frapper Paul.
33 Then the commanding officer came near, arrested him, commanded him to be bound with two chains, and inquired who he was and what he had done.
Alors le tribun s'approcha, mit la main sur lui et ordonna de le lier de deux chaînes; puis, il demanda qui il était, et ce qu'il avait fait.
34 Some shouted one thing and some another, among the crowd. When he couldn’t find out the truth because of the noise, he commanded him to be brought into the barracks.
Dans la foule, les uns criaient d'une manière, les autres d'une autre; et comme il ne pouvait rien apprendre de certain, à cause du tumulte, il ordonna de le mener dans la forteresse.
35 When he came to the stairs, he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd;
Quand Paul fut sur les degrés, les soldats durent le porter, à cause de la violence de la foule.
36 for the multitude of the people followed after, crying out, “Away with him!”
Car le peuple suivait en masse, en criant: A mort!
37 As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he asked the commanding officer, “May I speak to you?” He said, “Do you know Greek?
Au moment d'entrer dans la forteresse, Paul dit au tribun: M'est-il permis de te dire quelque chose? Le tribun répondit: Tu sais parler grec?
38 Aren’t you then the Egyptian who before these days stirred up to sedition and led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the Assassins?”
Tu n'es donc pas l'Égyptien qui, ces jours passés, a provoqué une sédition et entraîné au désert quatre mille brigands?
39 But Paul said, “I am a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city. I beg you, allow me to speak to the people.”
Paul lui dit: Je suis Juif, de Tarse, citoyen d'une ville de Cilicie qui n'est pas sans renom; permets-moi, je te prie, de parler au peuple.
40 When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, beckoned with his hand to the people. When there was a great silence, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying,
Le tribun le lui permit; et Paul, se tenant sur les degrés, fit signe de la main au peuple. Un profond silence s'établit; puis, parlant en langue hébraïque, il leur dit:
