Acts 19
1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus and found certain disciples.
Pendant qu'Apollos était à Corinthe, Paul, qui venait de parcourir les parties les plus élevées du pays, descendit à Éphèse et y trouva quelques disciples. Il leur demanda: «Avez-vous reçu l'Esprit saint, quand vous êtes devenus croyants?»
2 He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
— «Nous n'avons pas entendu parler d'un Esprit saint, » lui répondirent-ils.
3 He said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”
Il reprit alors: «Quel baptême avez-vous donc reçu?» — «Le baptême de Jean, » répliquèrent-ils.
4 Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Christ Jesus.”
Mais Paul: «Jean a baptisé; c'était un baptême de repentance, et il disait au peuple de croire en celui qui devait venir après lui, c'est-à-dire en Jésus.»
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Apprenant cela, ils furent baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus;
6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke with other languages and prophesied.
Paul leur imposa les mains, et l'Esprit saint descendit sur eux; ils se mirent à parler en langues étrangères et à prophétiser.
7 They were about twelve men in all.
Ils étaient douze en tout environ.
8 He entered into the synagogue and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning God’s Kingdom.
Paul se rendit à la synagogue, et il y prêcha en toute franchise sur le Royaume de Dieu. Pendant trois mois il s'efforça, par ses discours, de convaincre les Juifs.
9 But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
Mais quelques-uns restèrent endurcis, incrédules, et se mirent à décrier l'enseignement de Paul devant la foule; alors il se sépara d'eux, et tous les jours il réunit à part ses disciples dans un endroit qu'on appelait: «École de Tyrannus».
10 This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
Cela dura deux ans, de sorte que tous les habitants de l'Asie, Juifs et Grecs, entendirent la parole du Seigneur.
11 God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul,
Dieu faisait par les mains de Paul des miracles extraordinaires;
12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out.
au point qu'on mettait sur les malades le linge ou les vêtements qu'il avait portés, et ils étaient guéris de leurs maladies et délivrés des mauvais Esprits.
13 But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”
Alors quelques exorcistes juifs ambulants essayèrent d'invoquer le nom du Seigneur Jésus sur ceux qui étaient au pouvoir des mauvais Esprits. Ils disaient: «Je vous adjure par ce Jésus que prêche Paul.»
14 There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.
(C'étaient les sept fils d'un archiprêtre juif, Skevas, qui faisaient cela.)
15 The evil spirit answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?”
Mais le mauvais Esprit leur répondit: «Je connais Jésus, et je sais qui est Paul; et vous, qui êtes-vous?»
16 The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
Et puis, sautant sur eux, l'homme qui était possédé du mauvais Esprit en terrassa deux et eut si bien le dessus qu'ils durent s'enfuir de la maison sans vêtements et tout blessés.
17 This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
Le fait fut connu de tous les Juifs et de tous les Grecs qui habitaient Éphèse, et tous furent frappés de stupeur; on magnifiait le nom du Seigneur Jésus.
18 Many also of those who had believed came, confessing and declaring their deeds.
Plusieurs de ceux qui étaient devenus croyants venaient confesser et reconnaître leurs pratiques.
19 Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
Ceux qui s'étaient livrés à la magie vinrent en foule, apportèrent leurs livres et les brûlèrent publiquement. On en estima la valeur; elle se trouva être de cinquante mille pièces d'argent.
20 So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.
C'était ainsi que la parole du Seigneur gagnait en force et en autorité.
21 Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the Spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”
Après ces événements, Paul forma le projet de se rendre à Jérusalem en traversant la Macédoine et l'Achaïe. — «Quand j'aurai fait cela, disait-il, il faudra aussi que je voie Rome.»
22 Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.
Puis il envoya en Macédoine deux de ses aides, Timothée et Éraste, mais lui-même resta encore quelque temps en Asie.
23 About that time there arose no small disturbance concerning the Way.
Ce fut vers cette époque que la diffusion de l'Évangile fut l'occasion de troubles assez sérieux.
24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,
Un orfèvre, du nom de Démétrius, fabriquait des réductions en argent du Temple d'Artémis. Ses ouvriers trouvaient à ce travail un profit considérable.
25 whom he gathered together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.
Il les réunit un jour, avec tous les ouvriers du même état, et leur dit: «Éphésiens, «Vous savez que cette industrie fait notre fortune,
26 You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands.
et vous voyez et entendez dire que non seulement à Éphèse, mais dans presque toute l'Asie, ce Paul a gagné et entraîné une foule de gens, en disant que les dieux faits de main d'homme ne sont pas de vrais dieux.
27 Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”
Ce ne sont pas seulement nos intérêts qui vont être en souffrance, c'est le Temple même de notre grande déesse Artémis qui ne compte plus pour rien, et bientôt il ne sera plus question de la majesté de celle que toute l'Asie, que le monde entier adore.
28 When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
Ces paroles les rendirent furieux et ils se mirent à crier: «Vive la grande Artémis d'Éphèse!»
29 The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.
L'agitation gagna la ville entière. Toute la foule se porta au théâtre en y entraînant Caïus et Aristarque, les Macédoniens qui accompagnaient Paul.
30 When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.
Lui-même voulait se montrer au peuple, mais les disciples le retinrent.
31 Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater.
Il y eut même des Asiarques de ses amis qui le firent prier de ne pas se présenter au théâtre.
32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together.
Chacun criait de son côté; aussi l'assemblée était-elle très confuse et le plus grand nombre ne savait pas même pourquoi on s'était réuni.
33 They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.
Enfin, on fit sortir de la foule un certain Alexandre que les Juifs voulaient mettre en avant. Cet Alexandre, ayant fait signe de la main, se préparait à prendre devant le peuple la défense des siens.
34 But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
Mais la foule s'aperçut qu'il était juif, et alors elle se mit à crier d'une seule voix pendant près de deux heures: «Vive la grande Artémis d'Éphèse!»
35 When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?
Le chancelier de la ville parvint enfin à l'apaiser, et prononça ces paroles: Habitants d'Éphèse, «Quel homme au monde ignore que votre ville d'Éphèse ne soit la gardienne du Temple de la grande Artémis et de sa statue tombée du ciel?
36 Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet and to do nothing rash.
Cela est incontestable; il faut donc que vous restiez calmes et ne fassiez rien avec précipitation.
37 For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.
Vous avez amené là ces hommes, mais ils ne sont coupables ni de sacrilège ni de blasphème envers votre déesse.
38 If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.
Si Démétrius et ses ouvriers ont à se plaindre de quelqu'un, il y a des tribunaux, il y a des proconsuls, qu'on se fasse assigner!
39 But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.
S'il s'agit d'autres choses, on peut les examiner dans une assemblée légalement convoquée.
40 For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning today’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.”
Autrement nous risquons d'être accusés de sédition pour ce qui s'est passé aujourd'hui, car nous n'avons aucune bonne raison à donner pour expliquer notre rassemblement.»
41 When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
Là-dessus, il congédia l'assemblée.
