Acts 17
1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.
তাঁরা পরে অ্যাম্ফিপলি ও অ্যাপল্লোনিয়ার মধ্য দিয়ে যাত্রা করে থিষলনিকায় পৌঁছালেন। সেখানে একটি ইহুদি সমাজভবন ছিল।
2 Paul, as was his custom, went in to them; and for three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
পৌল তাঁর প্রথা অনুসারে সমাজভবনে গেলেন এবং তিনটি বিশ্রামদিনে যুক্তিসহ তাদের কাছে শাস্ত্রব্যাখ্যা করলেন।
3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.”
তিনি তাদের কাছে প্রমাণ করে দেখালেন যে, খ্রীষ্টের কষ্টভোগ করা ও মৃতলোক থেকে উত্থাপিত হওয়ার প্রয়োজন ছিল। তিনি বললেন, “এই যে যীশুর কথা আমি তোমাদের কাছে প্রচার করছি, তিনিই সেই মশীহ।”
4 Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas: of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and not a few of the chief women.
এতে কয়েকজন ইহুদি বিশ্বাস করে পৌল ও সীলের সঙ্গে যোগ দিল। সেই সঙ্গে বহুসংখ্যক ঈশ্বরভয়শীল গ্রিক ও বেশ কিছু বিশিষ্ট মহিলাও তাঁদের সঙ্গে যোগ দিলেন।
5 But the unpersuaded Jews took along some wicked men from the marketplace and gathering a crowd, set the city in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the people.
কিন্তু ইহুদিরা ঈর্ষান্বিত হয়ে উঠল। তাই তাঁরা বাজার-চত্বর থেকে কিছু খারাপ চরিত্রের লোককে একত্র করে একটি দল গঠন করল এবং তারা নগরে দাঙ্গাহাঙ্গামা শুরু করে দিল। তারা পৌল ও সীলের সন্ধানে যাসোনের বাড়ির দিকে ছুটে গেল, যেন তাদের সেই জনসাধারণের সামনে নিয়ে আসা যায়।
6 When they didn’t find them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers before the rulers of the city, crying, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here also,
কিন্তু তারা যখন তাঁদের খুঁজে পেল না, তারা যাসোন ও অন্য কয়েকজন বিশ্বাসীকে নগরের প্রশাসকদের কাছে টেনে নিয়ে গেল। তারা চিৎকার করে বলল, “এই লোকেরা সমস্ত জগৎ ওলট-পালট করে দিয়ে এখন এখানে এসে উপস্থিত হয়েছে,
7 whom Jason has received. These all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus!”
আর যাসোন তার বাড়িতে এদের আতিথ্য করেছে। এরা সবাই কৈসরের শাসন অস্বীকার করে, বলে যে যীশু নামে আর একজন রাজা আছেন।”
8 The multitude and the rulers of the city were troubled when they heard these things.
তারা যখন একথা শুনল, সেই জনসাধারণ ও নগর-প্রশাসকেরা উত্তেজিত হয়ে উঠল।
9 When they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
তখন যাসোন ও অন্যান্যদের কাছে জামিন আদায় করে, তাঁদের ছেড়ে দেওয়া হল।
10 The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue.
রাত্রি নেমে আসার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বিশ্বাসী ভাইয়েরা পৌল ও সীলকে বিরয়াতে পাঠিয়ে দিলেন। সেখানে পৌঁছে তাঁরা ইহুদিদের সমাজভবনে গেলেন।
11 Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.
বিরয়াবাসীরা থিষলনিকার ইহুদিদের চেয়ে উদার চরিত্রের মানুষ ছিল, কারণ তারা ভীষণ আগ্রহের সঙ্গে সুসমাচার গ্রহণ করেছিল। পৌল যা বলছিলেন, তা প্রকৃতই সত্য কি না, তা জানবার জন্য তারা প্রতিদিন শাস্ত্র পরীক্ষা করে দেখত।
12 Many of them therefore believed; also of the prominent Greek women, and not a few men.
অতএব, অনেক ইহুদি বিশ্বাস করল, বেশ কিছু বিশিষ্ট গ্রিক মহিলা ও অনেক গ্রিক পুরুষও বিশ্বাস করলেন।
13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Beroea also, they came there likewise, agitating the multitudes.
থিষলনিকার ইহুদিরা যখন জানতে পারল যে, পৌল বিরয়াতে ঈশ্বরের বাক্য প্রচার করছেন, তারা সেখানেও গেল। তারা গিয়ে সবাইকে বিক্ষুব্ধ ও উত্তেজিত করে তুলল।
14 Then the brothers immediately sent out Paul to go as far as to the sea, and Silas and Timothy still stayed there.
বিশ্বাসী ভাইয়েরা তৎক্ষণাৎ পৌলকে সমুদ্র উপকূলের দিকে পাঠিয়ে দিলেন, কিন্তু সীল ও তিমথি বিরয়াতে থেকে গেলেন।
15 But those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens. Receiving a commandment to Silas and Timothy that they should come to him very quickly, they departed.
পৌলের সঙ্গী যারা ছিল, তারা তাঁকে এথেন্সে নিয়ে এল এবং সীল ও তিমথিকে যত শীঘ্র সম্ভব পৌলের সঙ্গে মিলিত হওয়ার নির্দেশ নিয়ে ফিরে গেল।
16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw the city full of idols.
পৌল যখন এথেন্সে তাদের জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলেন, তখন নগরটি প্রতিমায় পরিপূর্ণ দেখে অত্যন্ত মর্মাহত হলেন।
17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who met him.
তাই তিনি সমাজভবনে ইহুদিদের ও ঈশ্বরভয়শীল গ্রিকদের সঙ্গে এবং বাজারে যাদের সঙ্গে তাঁর দিনের পর দিন সাক্ষাৎ হত, তাদের কাছে এ নিয়ে আলোচনা করতেন।
18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also were conversing with him. Some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign deities,” because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.
একদল এপিকুরীয় ও স্তোয়িকীয় দার্শনিক তাঁর সঙ্গে তর্কবিতর্কে করতে লাগল। তাদের মধ্যে কয়েকজন জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “এই বাচাল লোকটি কী বলতে চাইছে?” অন্যেরা মন্তব্য করল, “একে বিদেশি দেবতাদের প্রচারক বলে মনে হচ্ছে।” তাদের একথা বলার কারণ হল, পৌল যীশুর সুসমাচার ও পুনরুত্থানের কথা প্রচার করছিলেন।
19 They took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is, which you are speaking about?
তখন তারা তাঁকে ধরে আরেয়পাগের সভায় নিয়ে গেল। সেখানে তারা তাঁকে বলল, “আমরা কি জানতে পারি, আপনি যে নতুন শিক্ষা প্রচার করছেন, সেটি কী?
20 For you bring certain strange things to our ears. We want to know therefore what these things mean.”
আপনি কতগুলি অদ্ভুত ধারণার কথা আমাদের কানে দিচ্ছেন, আমরা সেগুলির অর্থ জানতে চাই।”
21 Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.
(এথেন্সের অধিবাসীরা ও সেখানকার প্রবাসী বিদেশিরা কেবলমাত্র নতুন সব চিন্তাধারা সম্পর্কে আলোচনা করা বা সেসব শোনা ছাড়া আর কোনো কিছুতে কালক্ষেপ করত না)।
22 Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said, “You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things.
পৌল তখন আরেয়পাগের সভায় উঠে দাঁড়িয়ে বললেন, “এথেন্সের জনগণ! আমি দেখতে পাচ্ছি, তোমরা সর্বতোভাবে অত্যন্ত ধর্মপরায়ণ।
23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription: ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ What therefore you worship in ignorance, I announce to you.
কারণ আমি যখন চারপাশে ঘুরে বেড়াচ্ছিলাম, তোমাদের আরাধনা করার বস্তু সতর্কভাবে দেখছিলাম। তখন আমি এমন একটি বেদি দেখতে পেলাম, যার উপরে লেখা আছে: এক অজ্ঞাত দেবতার উদ্দেশে। এখন, তোমরা যাকে অজ্ঞাতরূপে আরাধনা করো, তাঁরই কথা আমি তোমাদের কাছে বলতে চাই।
24 The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands.
“ঈশ্বর, যিনি এই জগৎ ও তার অন্তর্গত সমস্ত বস্তু রচনা করেছেন, তিনিই স্বর্গ ও মর্ত্যের প্রভু। তিনি হাত দিয়ে তৈরি দেবালয়ে বাস করেন না।
25 He isn’t served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath and all things.
তাঁর কোনো কিছুর প্রয়োজন আছে বলে মানুষের হাতে তাঁর সেবা গ্রহণের প্রয়োজন হয় না। কারণ তিনি স্বয়ং সমস্ত মানুষকে জীবন ও শ্বাস এবং সবকিছুই দান করেন।
26 He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons and the boundaries of their dwellings,
তিনি একজন ব্যক্তি থেকে সব জাতিকে সৃষ্টি করেছেন, যেন তারা সমস্ত পৃথিবীতে বসবাস করে। তিনি আগেই তাদের নির্দিষ্ট কাল ও বসবাসের জন্য স্থান স্থির করে রেখেছিলেন।
27 that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.
ঈশ্বর এ কাজ করেছেন, যেন মানুষ তাঁর অন্বেষণ করে এবং সম্ভব হলে অনুসন্ধান করে তাঁর সন্ধান পায়, যদিও তিনি আমাদের কারও কাছ থেকে দূরে নেই।
28 ‘For in him we live, move, and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’
কারণ তাঁর মধ্যেই আছে আমাদের প্রাণ, আমাদের জীবনাচরণ ও আমাদের অস্তিত্ব। যেমন তোমাদেরই কয়েকজন কবি বলেছেন, ‘আমরা তাঁর বংশ।’
29 Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and design of man.
“অতএব, আমরা যখন ঈশ্বরের বংশ, তখন আমাদের এরকম চিন্তা করা উচিত নয় যে ঈশ্বর মানুষের কলাকুশলতা ও কল্পনাপ্রসূত সোনা, রুপো বা পাথরের তৈরি করা কোনো প্রতিমূর্তি।
30 The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all people everywhere should repent,
অতীতকালে ঈশ্বর এই প্রকার অজ্ঞতাকে উপেক্ষা করেছেন, কিন্তু এখন তিনি সর্বস্থানের সব মানুষকে মন পরিবর্তনের আদেশ দিচ্ছেন।
31 because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.”
কারণ তিনি একটি দিন নির্ধারিত করেছেন, যখন তিনি তাঁর নিযুক্ত এক ব্যক্তির দ্বারা ন্যায়ে জগতের বিচার করবেন। মৃত্যু থেকে তাঁকে উত্থাপিত করে সব মানুষের কাছে তিনি তার প্রমাণ দিয়েছেন।”
32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, “We want to hear you again concerning this.”
যখন তারা মৃতদের পুনরুত্থানের কথা শুনল, তাদের মধ্যে কয়েকজন উপহাসসূচক মন্তব্য করল। কিন্তু অন্যেরা বলল, “আমরা আপনার কাছ থেকে এ বিষয়ে আবার শুনতে চাই।”
33 Thus Paul went out from among them.
একথা শুনে পৌল সভা ত্যাগ করে চলে গেলেন।
34 But certain men joined with him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
অল্প কয়েকজন ব্যক্তি পৌলের অনুসারী হলেন ও বিশ্বাস করলেন। তাদের মধ্যে ছিলেন আরেয়পাগের সদস্য দিয়নুষিয়, দামারি নামে এক মহিলা এবং আরও অনেক ব্যক্তি।
