Acts 16
1 He came to Derbe and Lystra; and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess who believed, but his father was a Greek.
Paul arriva à Derbe et à Lystre. Il y avait là un disciple, nommé Timothée, fils d'une Juive fidèle et d'un père grec.
2 The brothers who were at Lystra and Iconium gave a good testimony about him.
Les frères de Lystre et d'Iconium lui rendaient un bon témoignage.
3 Paul wanted to have him go out with him, and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
Paul voulut l'emmener avec lui; et, l'ayant pris, il le circoncit, à cause des Juifs qui vivaient dans ces pays-là; car tous savaient que son père était Grec.
4 As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered the decrees to them to keep which had been ordained by the apostles and elders who were at Jerusalem.
Dans les villes où ils passaient, ils recommandaient d'observer les décisions prises par les apôtres et par les anciens de Jérusalem.
5 So the assemblies were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.
Ainsi les Églises étaient affermies dans la foi, et elles augmentaient en nombre de jour en jour.
6 When they had gone through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.
Puis, ils traversèrent la Phrygie et le pays des Galates, le Saint-Esprit les ayant empêchés d'annoncer la parole en Asie.
7 When they had come opposite Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit didn’t allow them.
Arrivés près de la Mysie, ils se disposaient à aller en Bithynie; mais l'Esprit de Jésus ne le leur permit pas.
8 Passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
Alors ils traversèrent rapidement la Mysie, et ils descendirent à Troas. Paul se rend en Macédoine
9 A vision appeared to Paul in the night. There was a man of Macedonia standing, begging him and saying, “Come over into Macedonia and help us.”
Pendant la nuit, Paul eut une vision; un Macédonien se tenait devant lui et le suppliait, en disant: Passe en Macédoine et viens nous secourir!
10 When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go out to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the Good News to them.
Aussitôt après cette vision de Paul, nous cherchâmes à partir pour la Macédoine, convaincus que Dieu nous appelait à y annoncer l'Évangile.
11 Setting sail therefore from Troas, we made a straight course to Samothrace, and the day following to Neapolis;
Étant donc partis de Troas, nous naviguâmes droit sur Samothrace, et le lendemain, sur Néapolis;
12 and from there to Philippi, which is a city of Macedonia, the foremost of the district, a Roman colony. We were staying some days in this city.
de là, nous vînmes à Philippes, la première ville de la province de la Macédoine, et une colonie romaine. Nous y séjournâmes quelques jours.
13 On the Sabbath day we went outside of the city by a riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together.
Le jour du sabbat, nous nous rendîmes hors des portes, au bord de la rivière, où nous pensions qu'on se rassemblait pour la prière; et, nous étant assis, nous parlions aux femmes qui s'y trouvaient réunies.
14 A certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, one who worshiped God, heard us. The Lord opened her heart to listen to the things which were spoken by Paul.
L'une d'elles, nommée Lydie, de la ville de Thyatire, marchande de pourpre, qui craignait Dieu, nous écouta; et le Seigneur lui ouvrit le coeur pour qu'elle fût attentive à ce que Paul disait.
15 When she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay.” So she persuaded us.
Quand elle eut été baptisée avec sa famille, elle nous adressa cette demande: Si vous m'avez jugée fidèle au Seigneur, entrez dans ma maison, et demeurez-y; et elle nous y obligea.
16 As we were going to prayer, a certain girl having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by fortune telling.
Un jour que nous allions à la prière, une servante, qui avait un esprit de Python, et qui, en devinant, procurait un grand profit à ses maîtres, nous rencontra.
17 Following Paul and us, she cried out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us a way of salvation!”
Elle se mit à nous suivre, Paul et nous, en criant: Ces hommes-là sont des serviteurs du Dieu Très-Haut; ils vous annoncent la voie du salut.
18 She was doing this for many days. But Paul, becoming greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” It came out that very hour.
Elle fit ainsi pendant plusieurs jours; mais Paul, en étant importuné, se retourna et dit à l'esprit: Je te commande, au nom de Jésus-Christ, de sortir de cette femme. Et l'esprit sortit à l'heure même.
19 But when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.
Cependant les maîtres de cette servante, voyant disparaître l'espoir de leur gain, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, les traînèrent sur la place publique devant les magistrats,
20 When they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men, being Jews, are agitating our city
et, les ayant amenés aux préteurs, ils dirent: Ces hommes troublent notre ville!
21 and advocate customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans.”
Ce sont des Juifs; et ils enseignent des coutumes qu'il ne nous est permis ni d'accepter ni de suivre, à nous qui sommes Romains.
22 The multitude rose up together against them and the magistrates tore their clothes from them, then commanded them to be beaten with rods.
La foule se souleva aussi contre eux, et les préteurs, les ayant fait dépouiller de leurs vêtements, ordonnèrent qu'ils fussent battus de verges.
23 When they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely.
Après qu'on leur eut donné plusieurs coups, ils les firent jeter en prison, en recommandant au geôlier de les tenir sous bonne garde.
24 Having received such a command, he threw them into the inner prison and secured their feet in the stocks.
Ayant reçu cet ordre, il les mit au fond de la prison, et leur serra les pieds dans des entraves.
25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
Vers le milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas, étant en prières, chantaient les louanges de Dieu, et les prisonniers les écoutaient.
26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were loosened.
Tout à coup, il se fit un grand tremblement de terre, de sorte que les fondements de la prison furent ébranlés. En même temps toutes les portes s'ouvrirent, et les liens de tous les prisonniers tombèrent.
27 The jailer, being roused out of sleep and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.
Le geôlier, réveillé en sursaut et voyant les portes de la prison ouvertes, tira son épée; et il allait se tuer, croyant que les prisonniers s'étaient enfuis.
28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, “Don’t harm yourself, for we are all here!”
Mais Paul lui cria à haute voix: Ne te fais point de mal; nous sommes tous ici!
29 He called for lights, sprang in, fell down trembling before Paul and Silas,
Alors le geôlier, ayant demandé de la lumière, accourut; et, tout tremblant, il se jeta aux pieds de Paul et de Silas.
30 brought them out, and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
Puis, les ayant menés dehors, il leur dit: Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé?
31 They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Ils lui dirent: Crois au Seigneur Jésus, et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta famille.
32 They spoke the word of the Lord to him, and to all who were in his house.
Alors ils lui annoncèrent la parole de Dieu, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui étaient dans sa maison.
33 He took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes, and was immediately baptized, he and all his household.
Le geôlier, les prenant avec lui à cette même heure de la nuit, lava leurs plaies; et aussitôt il fut baptisé, lui et tous les siens.
34 He brought them up into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly with all his household, having believed in God.
Puis, les ayant fait monter dans son logement, il fit dresser la table, et il se réjouit avec toute sa famille de ce qu'il avait cru en Dieu.
35 But when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants, saying, “Let those men go.”
Quand le jour fut venu, les préteurs envoyèrent les licteurs dire au geôlier: Laisse aller ces hommes.
36 The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore come out and go in peace.”
Le geôlier rapporta ces paroles à Paul: Les préteurs me font dire de vous laisser partir. Sortez donc, et allez en paix.
37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly without a trial, men who are Romans, and have cast us into prison! Do they now release us secretly? No, most certainly, but let them come themselves and bring us out!”
Mais Paul dit aux licteurs: Après nous avoir battus de verges en public et sans jugement, nous qui sommes citoyens romains, ils nous ont mis en prison; et maintenant, ils nous font sortir en cachette! Cela ne sera pas! Qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes nous mettre en liberté!
38 The sergeants reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans,
Les licteurs rapportèrent ces paroles aux préteurs, qui furent effrayés en apprenant qu'ils étaient Romains.
39 and they came and begged them. When they had brought them out, they asked them to depart from the city.
Ils vinrent leur parler; ils les mirent en liberté et les prièrent de quitter la ville.
40 They went out of the prison and entered into Lydia’s house. When they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them, then departed.
Quand ils furent sortis de la prison, les apôtres entrèrent chez Lydie, et, après avoir vu les frères et les avoir exhortés, ils partirent.
