1 Timothy 1
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ according to the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ our hope,
Paul, Apôtre de Jésus-Christ par l'ordre de Dieu, notre Sauveur, et de Jésus-Christ, notre espérance,
2 to Timothy, my true child in faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
à Timothée mon véritable enfant en la foi: que la grâce, la miséricorde et la paix te soient données par Dieu, notre Père, et par Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur!
3 As I urged you when I was going into Macedonia, stay at Ephesus that you might command certain men not to teach a different doctrine,
Je te renouvelle l'invitation que je te fis en partant pour la Macédoine, de rester à Éphèse, afin d'enjoindre à certaines personnes de ne pas enseigner de fausses doctrines,
4 and not to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than God’s stewardship, which is in faith.
et de ne pas s'attacher à des fables et à des généalogies sans fin, qui sont une source de disputes, plutôt qu'elles n'avancent le règne de Dieu, qui repose sur la foi.
5 But the goal of this command is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith,
Le but du Commandement, c'est la charité qui vient d'un coeur pur, d'une bonne conscience et d'une foi sincère.
6 from which things some, having missed the mark, have turned away to vain talking,
Quelques-uns, ayant perdu ces choses de vue, sont tombés dans le bavardage,
7 desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say nor about what they strongly affirm.
tout en ayant la prétention d'être des docteurs de la loi, quoiqu'ils ne comprennent ni ce qu'ils disent, ni ce qu'ils certifient.
8 But we know that the law is good if a person uses it lawfully,
Nous savons que la loi est bonne, pourvu qu'on en fasse un usage légitime,
9 as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
et qu'on retienne bien qu'elle n'est pas faite pour le juste, mais pour les hommes sans frein ni règle, pour les impies et les pécheurs, pour les scélérats et les profanes, pour les parricides, pour les meurtriers,
10 for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave-traders, for liars, for perjurers, and for any other thing contrary to the sound doctrine,
pour les libertins, pour les infâmes, pour les voleurs d'hommes, pour les menteurs, pour les parjures et pour quiconque enfreint la discipline morale.
11 according to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
Ainsi l'enseigne l'évangile, où resplendit la gloire du Dieu souverainement heureux. Cet évangile m'a été confié,
12 I thank him who enabled me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he counted me faithful, appointing me to service,
et je rends grâce à Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur, qui m'a fortifié, de ce qu'il m'a jugé fidèle, en m'appelant au ministère,
13 although I used to be a blasphemer, a persecutor, and insolent. However, I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
quoique je fusse auparavant un blasphémateur, un persécuteur, un homme violent. Mais j'ai obtenu miséricorde, parce que j'agissais par ignorance dans mon incrédulité,
14 The grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
et la grâce de notre Seigneur a surabondé avec la foi en Jésus-Christ et l'amour pour lui.
15 The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
C'est une vérité certaine et digne de toute créance, que Jésus-Christ est venu dans le monde pour sauver les pécheurs, dont je suis le premier.
16 However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
Mais j'ai obtenu miséricorde, précisément afin que Jésus-Christ fît voir en moi, le premier, sa longanimité tout entière, et que je servisse d'exemple à ceux qui, à l'avenir, mettront leur confiance en lui pour avoir la vie éternelle. (aiōnios g166)
17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (aiōn g165)
Au Roi des siècles, immortel, invisible, seul Dieu, soient honneur et gloire aux siècles des siècles! Amen! (aiōn g165)
18 I commit this instruction to you, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which were given to you before, that by them you may wage the good warfare,
Ce que je te recommande, Timothée, mon enfant, c'est que, suivant les prédictions qu'on a faites autrefois à ton sujet, tu combattes le bon combat, et que tu les réalises
19 holding faith and a good conscience, which some having thrust away made a shipwreck concerning the faith,
en gardant la foi et une bonne conscience. C'est pour avoir renoncé à cette bonne conscience, que quelques-uns ont fait naufrage par rapport à la foi:
20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they might be taught not to blaspheme.
de ce nombre sont Hyménée et Alexandre, que j'ai livrés à Satan, afin qu'ils apprennent à ne point blasphémer.
