1 Kings 20
1 Ben Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his army together; and there were thirty-two kings with him, with horses and chariots. He went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.
Ben-hadad, rey de Siria, reunió todo su ejército, y acompañado por 32 reyes que dependían de él, marchó contra Samaria con caballería y carruajes. La sitió y la atacó.
2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel and said to him, “Ben Hadad says,
Envió mensajeros a la ciudad, a Acab, rey de Israel, para decirle:
3 ‘Your silver and your gold are mine. Your wives also and your children, even the best, are mine.’”
Así dijo Ben-hadad: Tu plata y oro son míos. Tus mujeres y los mejores de tus hijos son míos.
4 The king of Israel answered, “It is according to your saying, my lord, O king. I am yours, and all that I have.”
Y el rey de Israel respondió: Como tú dices, oh mi ʼadón el rey, yo soy tuyo con todo lo que tengo.
5 The messengers came again and said, “Ben Hadad says, ‘I sent indeed to you, saying, “You shall deliver me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children;
Los mensajeros volvieron otra vez y dijeron: Ben-hadad habló esto: Por cierto, envié a decirte: Tu plata y tu oro, también tus mujeres y tus hijos me los darás.
6 but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they will search your house and the houses of your servants. Whatever is pleasant in your eyes, they will put it in their hand, and take it away.”’”
Además, mañana a esta hora te enviaré mis esclavos, los cuales registrarán tu casa y las casas de tus esclavos. Tomarán y se llevarán todo lo agradable a tus ojos.
7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, “Please notice how this man seeks mischief; for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I didn’t deny him.”
El rey de Israel llamó a todos los ancianos del país y les dijo: Reconozcan ahora y vean cómo éste no busca sino hacer daño, porque exige mis mujeres e hijos, y mi plata y oro, aunque yo no se los negué.
8 All the elders and all the people said to him, “Don’t listen, and don’t consent.”
Todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo respondieron: No lo escuches ni accedas.
9 Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you sent for to your servant at the first I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’” The messengers departed and brought him back the message.
Entonces él respondió a los mensajeros de Ben-hadad: Digan a mi ʼadón el rey: Haré todo lo que mandaste a tu esclavo al principio, pero esto no lo puedo hacer. Los mensajeros fueron y le dieron la respuesta.
10 Ben Hadad sent to him, and said, “The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria will be enough for handfuls for all the people who follow me.”
Y Ben-hadad envió a decirle: ¡Así me hagan los ʼelohim y aun me añadan, que el polvo de Samaria no bastará para llenar las manos de todo el pueblo que me sigue!
11 The king of Israel answered, “Tell him, ‘Don’t let him who puts on his armor brag like he who takes it off.’”
Pero el rey de Israel respondió: Díganle: No se jacte tanto el que se ata las armas como el que se las desata.
12 When Ben Hadad heard this message as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, he said to his servants, “Prepare to attack!” So they prepared to attack the city.
Sucedió que él oyó estas palabras mientras bebía con los reyes en el puesto de comando, y dijo a sus esclavos: ¡Alístense! Y ellos se alistaron para atacar la ciudad.
13 Behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, “Yahweh says, ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand today. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.’”
Ciertamente un profeta se acercó a Acab, rey de Israel, y le dijo: Yavé dice: ¿Ves todo ese inmenso ejército? Mira, Yo lo entrego hoy en tu mano para que reconozcas que Yo soy Yavé.
14 Ahab said, “By whom?” He said, “Yahweh says, ‘By the young men of the princes of the provinces.’” Then he said, “Who shall begin the battle?” He answered, “You.”
Acab preguntó: ¿Por medio de quién? Y él dijo: Yavé dice: Por medio de los esclavos de los jefes de las provincias. Y Acab preguntó: ¿Quién comenzará la batalla? Y él respondió: Tú.
15 Then he mustered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty-two. After them, he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
Entonces pasó revista a los esclavos de los jefes de las provincias, y eran 232. Después de ellos pasó revista a todo el pueblo, a todos los hijos de Israel, y eran 7.000.
16 They went out at noon. But Ben Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings who helped him.
Éstos salieron al mediodía, mientras Ben-hadad estaba bebiendo hasta embriagarse en las cabañas con los reyes, los 32 reyes que fueron a ayudarlo.
17 The young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben Hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, “Men are coming out from Samaria.”
Los esclavos de los jefes de las provincias salieron primero. Ben-hadad envió a algunos, quienes le informaron y dijeron: Unos hombres salieron de Samaria.
18 He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive.”
Y él ordenó: Si salieron en son de paz, agárrenlos vivos, y si salieron a combatir, también agárrenlos vivos.
19 So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them.
Los esclavos de los jefes de las provincias salieron de la ciudad, y el ejército, tras ellos.
20 They each killed his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen.
Cada cual mató al que iba contra él. Los sirios huyeron, e Israel los persiguió. Pero Ben-hadad, rey de Siria, escapó a caballo con algunos jinetes.
21 The king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter.
El rey de Israel salió y atacó a la caballería y a los carruajes, y derrotó a los sirios con una gran matanza.
22 The prophet came near to the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself, and plan what you must do, for at the return of the year, the king of Syria will come up against you.”
Luego el profeta fue al rey de Israel y le dijo: Vé, fortalécete. Considera y mira lo que tienes que hacer, porque el rey de Siria volverá contra ti en la primavera del próximo año.
23 The servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we. But let’s fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than they.
Y los esclavos del rey de Siria le dijeron: Sus ʼelohim son ʼelohim de las montañas. Por eso fueron más fuertes que nosotros, pero si combatimos contra ellos en la llanura, sin duda seremos más fuertes que ellos.
24 Do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their place.
Haz esto: Saca a cada uno de los reyes de su puesto, y coloca capitanes en su lugar.
25 Muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. We will fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than they are.” He listened to their voice and did so.
Organiza otro ejército para ti, como el que perdiste, caballo por caballo y carruaje por carruaje. Pelearemos contra ellos en la llanura, y sin duda seremos más fuertes que ellos. Escuchó la voz de ellos, y lo hizo así.
26 At the return of the year, Ben Hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
Aconteció el año siguiente que Ben-hadad pasó revista a los sirios, y fue a Afec para combatir contra Israel.
27 The children of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and went against them. The children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of young goats, but the Syrians filled the country.
Los hijos de Israel fueron convocados, provistos de raciones, y salieron a encontrarlos. Pero cuando acamparon frente a ellos, los hijos de Israel eran como dos pequeños rebaños de cabras, mientras que los sirios llenaban el campo.
28 A man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “Yahweh says, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “Yahweh is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys,” therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am Yahweh.’”
Entonces el varón de ʼElohim se acercó y habló al rey de Israel: Yavé dice: Por cuanto los sirios dijeron: Yavé es ʼElohim de las montañas y no ʼElohim de los valles, Yo entregué esa gran multitud en tu mano, para que reconozcas que Yo soy Yavé.
29 They encamped opposite each other for seven days. Then on the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand footmen of the Syrians in one day.
Acamparon un bando contra el otro durante siete días, y sucedió que al séptimo día se dio la batalla. Los hijos de Israel mataron a 100.000 hombres de los sirios de a pie en un solo día.
30 But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. Ben Hadad fled and came into the city, into an inner room.
Los demás huyeron a Afec, pero el muro de la ciudad se derrumbó sobre los 27.000 hombres que quedaban. Ben-hadad huyó, entró en la ciudad, y se escondía de aposento en aposento.
31 His servants said to him, “See now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us put sackcloth on our bodies and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Maybe he will save your life.”
Entonces sus esclavos le dijeron: Mira, oímos que los reyes de la casa de Israel son reyes clementes. Te rogamos que nos permitas ahora atar tela áspera sobre nuestras cinturas, ponernos cuerdas gruesas al cuello y salir al rey de Israel. Quizás te conceda la vida.
32 So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, “Your servant Ben Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’” He said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
Se ataron tela áspera a sus cinturas y se pusieron cuerdas gruesas al cuello. Fueron al rey de Israel y dijeron: Tu esclavo Ben-hadad dice: ¡Te ruego que me dejes vivir! Y él preguntó: ¿Vive todavía? ¡Es hermano mío!
33 Now the men observed diligently and hurried to take this phrase; and they said, “Your brother Ben Hadad.” Then he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben Hadad came out to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
Los hombres tomaron esto como buen augurio, se apresuraron a confirmarlo y exclamaron: ¡Ben-hadad es tu hermano! Él dijo: Vayan y tráiganlo. Ben-hadad se presentó ante él, quien lo subió a su carroza.
34 Ben Hadad said to him, “The cities which my father took from your father I will restore. You shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria.” “I”, said Ahab, “will let you go with this covenant.” So he made a covenant with him and let him go.
Y Ben-hadad le dijo: Las ciudades que mi padre quitó a tu padre las restituiré, y harás para ti plazas en Damasco, como mi padre las hizo en Samaria. Y con este pacto yo te dejaré ir, [dijo Acab]. E hizo un pacto con [Ben-hadad] y lo dejó ir.
35 A certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow by Yahweh’s word, “Please strike me!” The man refused to strike him.
Entonces cierto varón de los hijos de los profetas dijo a otro, por la Palabra de Yavé: ¡Te ruego que me golpees! Pero el hombre rehusó golpearlo.
36 Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed Yahweh’s voice, behold, as soon as you have departed from me, a lion will kill you.” As soon as he had departed from him, a lion found him and killed him.
Y él le dijo: Por cuanto no obedeciste la voz de Yavé, ciertamente cuando te apartes de mí, te matará un león. Y cuando se apartó de él, un león lo encontró y lo mató.
37 Then he found another man, and said, “Please strike me.” The man struck him and wounded him.
Y él halló a otro hombre y le dijo: ¡Te ruego que me golpees! Y el hombre lo golpeó y le infligió una herida.
38 So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes.
El profeta se disfrazó y se aplicó una venda sobre los ojos. Fue y se colocó delante del rey en el camino.
39 As the king passed by, he cried to the king, and he said, “Your servant went out into the middle of the battle; and behold, a man came over and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man! If by any means he is missing, then your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’
Sucedió que cuando el rey pasaba, aquél gritó al rey: Tu esclavo estuvo en medio de la batalla, y ciertamente, uno se apartó y me llevó a un hombre, y dijo: Guarda a este hombre, porque si escapa, tu vida responderá por la suya, o tendrás que pagar 33 kilogramos de plata.
40 As your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be. You yourself have decided it.”
Sucedió que mientras tu esclavo estaba ocupado en una y otra cosa, él desapareció. Entonces el rey de Israel le respondió: ¡Esa es tu sentencia! ¡Tú mismo la pronunciaste!
41 He hurried, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized that he was one of the prophets.
Él se quitó apresuradamente la venda de sus ojos, y el rey de Israel reconoció que era uno de los profetas.
42 He said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life will take the place of his life, and your people take the place of his people.’”
Y él le dijo: Yavé dice: Porque soltaste de la mano al hombre que Yo destiné a la destrucción, ¡tu vida pagará por su vida, y tu pueblo por su pueblo!
43 The king of Israel went to his house sullen and angry, and came to Samaria.
El rey de Israel fue a su casa decaído e irritado, y llegó a Samaria.
