1 Corinthians 13
1 If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don’t have love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
Quand je parlerais les langues des hommes et des anges, si je n'ai pas de charité, je suis un airain retentissant, ou une cymbale bruyante.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don’t have love, I am nothing.
Et quand j'aurais un don de prophétie, et que je connaîtrais tous les mystères et toute la connaissance, et quand j'aurais toute la foi qui déplace les montagnes, si je n'ai pas de charité, je ne suis rien.
3 If I give away all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don’t have love, it profits me nothing.
Et quand j'emploierais en libéralités tout ce que je possède, et quand je livrerais mon corps afin d'en tirer gloire, si je n'ai pas de charité, cela ne me sert de rien.
4 Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud,
La charité est patiente, la charité est bienveillante; elle n'est pas jalouse, elle ne s'en croit point, elle ne s'enfle point d'orgueil,
5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil;
elle n'agit point avec indécence, elle ne recherche point ce qui ne lui appartient pas, elle ne s'irrite point, elle ne tient pas compte du mal,
6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
elle ne se réjouit point de l'injustice, mais elle se réjouit avec la vérité;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.
elle supporte tout, elle croit tout, elle espère tout, elle surmonte tout.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with.
La charité ne périt jamais; mais quant à la prophétie, elle sera détruite; quant aux langues, elles cesseront; quant à la connaissance, elle sera détruite;
9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part;
car c'est partiellement que nous connaissons, et c'est partiellement que nous prophétisons;
10 but when that which is complete has come, then that which is partial will be done away with.
mais quand ce qui est parfait sera venu, ce qui est partiel sera détruit.
11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put away childish things.
Lorsque j'étais enfant, je parlais comme un enfant, je pensais comme un enfant, je raisonnais comme un enfant; lorsque je suis devenu un homme, j'ai détruit ce qui était de l'enfant.
12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.
Maintenant en effet nous voyons au moyen d'un miroir, d'une manière obscure, mais alors ce sera face à face; maintenant je connais partiellement, mais alors je connaîtrai comme j'ai été connu.
13 But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love.
Mais pour le moment ces trois choses demeurent: la foi, l'espérance, la charité; or la plus grande d'entre elles est la charité.
