Numbers 35
1 And the LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan [near] Jericho, saying,
Yahweh parla à Moïse, dans les plaines de Moab, près du Jourdain, vis-à-vis de Jéricho, en disant:
2 Command the children of Israel, that they give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give [also] to the Levites suburbs for the cities around them.
« Ordonne aux enfants d'Israël de céder aux Lévites, sur l'héritage qu'ils posséderont, des villes pour y habiter. Vous donnerez aussi aux Lévites des lieux de pâture autour de ces villes.
3 And they shall have the cities to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.
Ils auront les villes pour y habiter, et leurs lieux de pâture seront pour leur gros bétail, pour leurs autres biens et pour tous leurs animaux.
4 And the suburbs of the cities which ye shall give to the Levites, [shall reach] from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits on all sides.
Les lieux de pâture des villes que vous donnerez aux Lévites seront, à partir du mur de la ville, en dehors, de mille coudées tout autour.
5 And ye shall measure from without the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and the city [shall be] in the midst: this shall be to them the suburbs of the cities.
Vous mesurerez, en dehors de la ville, deux mille coudées pour le côté oriental, deux mille coudées pour le côté méridional, deux mille coudées pour le côté occidental et deux mille coudées pour le côté septentrional; la ville sera au milieu: tels seront les lieux de pâture de leurs villes.
6 And among the cities which ye shall give to the Levites [there shall be] six cities for refuge, which ye shall appoint for the man-slayer, that he may flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two cities.
Quant aux villes que vous donnerez aux Lévites, ce sont les six villes de refuge, que vous disposerez pour que le meurtrier s'y réfugie; et, en plus, vous donnerez quarante-deux autres villes.
7 [So] all the cities which ye shall give to the Levites [shall be] forty and eight cities: them [shall ye give] with their suburbs.
Ainsi toutes les villes que vous donnerez aux Lévites seront au nombre de quarante-huit villes avec leurs lieux de pâture.
8 And the cities which ye shall give [shall be] of the possession of the children of Israel: from [them that have] many ye shall give many; but from [them that have] few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities to the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.
Pour les villes que vous donnerez sur les possessions des enfants d'Israël, vous prendrez plus de ceux qui ont plus, et vous prendrez moins de ceux qui ont moins. Chacun cédera de ses villes aux Lévites à proportion de l'héritage qu'il aura reçu. »
9 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
Yahweh parla à Moïse, en disant:
10 Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, When ye have passed over Jordan into the land of Canaan;
« Parle aux enfants d'Israël, et dis-leur: Lorsque vous aurez passé le Jourdain et que vous serez entrés dans le pays de Chanaan,
11 Then ye shall appoint for you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, who killeth any person at unawares.
vous vous choisirez des villes qui soient pour vous des villes de refuge, où pourra se retirer le meurtrier qui aura tué quelqu'un par mégarde.
12 And they shall be to you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the man-slayer may not die, until he stands before the congregation in judgment.
Ces villes vous serviront de refuge contre le vengeur du sang, afin que le meurtrier ne soit pas mis à mort avant d'avoir comparu en jugement devant l'assemblée.
13 And of these cities which ye shall give, six cities shall ye have for refuge.
Quant aux villes que vous donnerez, vous aurez six villes de refuge.
14 Ye shall give three cities on this side of Jordan, and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan, [which] shall be cities of refuge.
Vous donnerez trois villes au-delà du Jourdain, et vous donnerez trois villes dans le pays de Chanaan; elles seront villes de refuge.
15 These six cities shall be a refuge, [both] for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither.
Ces six villes serviront de refuge pour les enfants d'Israël, pour l'étranger et pour celui qui demeure au milieu de vous, afin que tout homme qui aura tué quelqu'un par mégarde puisse s'y retirer.
16 And if he shall smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he shall die, he [is] a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
S'il l'a frappé avec un instrument de fer, et que la mort s'ensuive, c'est un meurtrier: le meurtrier sera puni de mort.
17 And if he shall smite him by throwing a stone, by which he may die, and he shall die, he [is] a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
S'il l'a frappé, ayant à la main une pierre qui peut causer la mort, et que la mort s'ensuive, c'est un meurtrier: le meurtrier sera puni de mort.
18 Or [if] he shall smite him with a hand-weapon of wood, with which he may die, and he shall die, he [is] a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
S'il l'a frappé, ayant à la main un instrument de bois qui peut causer la mort, et que la mort s'ensuive, c'est un meurtrier: le meurtrier sera puni de mort.
19 The avenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him.
Le vengeur du sang fera lui-même mourir le meurtrier; quand il le rencontrera, il le tuera.
20 But if he shall thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying in wait, that he die.
S'il a renversé un homme par haine, ou s'il lui a jeté quelque chose en guet-apens, et que la mort s'ensuive,
21 Or in enmity shall smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote [him] shall surely be put to death; [for] he [is] a murderer: the avenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him.
ou s'il l'a frappé de sa main par inimitié, et que la mort s'ensuive, celui qui a frappé sera puni de mort, c'est un meurtrier: le vengeur du sang fera mourir le meurtrier quand il le rencontrera.
22 But if he shall thrust him suddenly without enmity, or shall have cast upon him any thing without laying in wait,
Mais s'il l'a renversé par hasard, sans inimitié, ou s'il lui a jeté quelque chose sans intention,
23 Or with any stone, by which a man may die, seeing [him] not, and shall cast [it] upon him, that he die, and [was] not his enemy, neither sought his harm:
ou s'il a fait tomber sur lui par mégarde une pierre qui peut causer la mort, et que la mort s'ensuive, sans qu'il soit son ennemi et qu'il lui cherche du mal,
24 Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the avenger of blood according to these judgments:
l'assemblée jugera entre celui qui a frappé et le vengeur du sang, selon ces lois.
25 And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he had fled: and he shall abide in it to the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.
Et l'assemblée délivrera le meurtrier du vengeur du sang et le fera retourner dans la ville de refuge où il s'était enfui; et il y demeurera jusqu'à la mort du grand prêtre qui a été oint de l'huile sainte.
26 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he had fled;
Si le meurtrier sort avant ce temps du territoire de la ville de refuge où il s'est enfui,
27 And the avenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the avenger of blood shall kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:
et si le vengeur du sang le rencontre hors du territoire de sa ville de refuge, et si le vengeur du sang tue le meurtrier, il ne sera pas coupable de meurtre;
28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.
car le meurtrier doit demeurer dans sa ville de refuge jusqu'à la mort du grand prêtre; et, après la mort du grand prêtre, le meurtrier pourra retourner au pays où se trouve sa possession.
29 So these [things] shall be for a statute of judgment to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
Ces ordonnances fixeront le droit pour vous et pour vos descendants dans tous les lieux où vous habiterez.
30 Whoever killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person [to cause him] to die.
Quand un homme en a tué un autre, c'est sur la déposition de témoins qu'on ôtera la vie au meurtrier; mais un seul témoin ne peut déposer pour faire condamner une personne à mort.
31 Moreover, ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, who [is] guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.
Vous n'accepterez point de rançon pour la vie d'un meurtrier dont le crime mérite la mort, car il doit être mis à mort.
32 And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that hath fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
Vous n'accepterez point de rançon qui permette à celui qui s'est enfui dans sa ville de refuge de revenir habiter dans son pays avant la mort du grand prêtre.
33 So ye shall not pollute the land in which ye [are]: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him that shed it.
Vous ne souillerez point le pays où vous serez, car le sang souille le pays, et il n'y a pour le pays d'expiation pour le sang qui y a été répandu, que par le sang de celui qui l'a répandu.
34 Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, in which I dwell: for I the LORD dwell among the children of Israel.
Tu ne profaneras point le pays où vous demeurerez, et au milieu duquel j'habite; car je suis Yahweh, qui habite au milieu des enfants d'Israël. »
