Judges 19
1 And it came to pass in those days, when [there was] no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite dwelling on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.
En ces temps, où il n’y avait point de roi en Israël, un lévite, habitant sur la lisière de la montagne d’Ephraïm, avait pria une concubine originaire de Bethléem-en-Juda.
2 And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him to her father's house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there four whole months.
Cette concubine, infidèle à son mari, le quitta pour s’en aller à Bethléem-en-Juda, chez son père, où elle demeura l’espace de quatre mois.
3 And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, [and] to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
L’Époux se mit en route pour la rejoindre, désirant lui faire entendre raison et la ramener; il avait avec lui son jeune serviteur et deux ânes. Elle le fit entrer chez son père, et le père de la jeune femme l’accueillit avec joie.
4 And his father-in-law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they ate and drank, and lodged there.
Sur les instances de son beau-père, le lévite séjourna chez lui trois jours; là ils mangèrent et burent, et passèrent la nuit.
5 And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he arose to depart: and the damsel's father said to his son-in-law, Comfort thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward depart.
Le quatrième jour, ils se levèrent de bonne heure et l’on se disposa au départ; mais le père de la jeune femme dit à son gendre: "Mange un morceau pour te réconforter, vous partirez après."
6 And they sat down, and ate and drank both of them together: for the damsel's father had said to the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thy heart be merry.
Et tous deux se mirent à table, mangèrent et burent ensemble, et le père de la jeune femme dit au mari: "Consens à rester encore cette nuit, pour te réjouir le cœur."
7 And when the man rose to depart, his father-in-law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.
L’Homme se leva néanmoins pour partir; mais son beau-père le pressa tant qu’il se ravisa et resta là cette nuit.
8 And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel's father said, Comfort thy heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they ate both of them.
Le matin du cinquième jour, il se leva tôt pour partir. Le père de la jeune femme lui dit: "Restaure-toi d’abord, et attardez-vous jusqu’au déclin du jour." Et ils mangèrent ensemble.
9 And when the man arose to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel's father, said to him, Behold now the day draweth towards evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day is coming to an end, lodge here, that thy heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
L’Homme alors se leva pour se mettre en route, avec sa concubine et son serviteur. Son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, lui dit: "Ecoute donc, le jour tire à sa fin, passez la nuit ici; voici un gîte pour aujourd’hui, restes-y cette nuit pour te réjouir le cœur; demain de bon matin vous vous mettrez en route, et tu regagneras ta demeure."
10 But the man would not tarry that night, but he arose and departed, and came over against Jebus, which [is] Jerusalem; and [there were] with him two asses saddled, his concubine also [was] with him.
Mais l’homme, ne voulant plus passer la nuit, se mit en route et arriva en vue de Jébus, qui est Jérusalem, ayant avec lui les deux ânes sellés, et accompagné de sa concubine.
11 [And] when they [were] by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in to this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.
Comme ils étaient près de Jébus et que le jour était fort bas, le jeune homme dit à son maître: "Allons, je te prie, et entrons dans cette ville des Jébuséens, pour y passer la nuit."
12 And his master said to him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that [is] not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
"Non, lui répondit son maître, nous n’entrerons point dans une ville d’étrangers, qui ne sont pas israélites; nous pousserons jusqu’à Ghibea."
13 And he said to his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.
Il ajouta, parlant à son serviteur: "Passons outre, nous pourrons atteindre quelque autre endroit, et passer la nuit à Ghibea ou à Rama."
14 And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them [when they were] by Gibeah, which [belongeth] to Benjamin.
Ils continuèrent donc de marcher, et le soleil se couchait lorsqu’ils arrivèrent à la Ghibea de Benjamin.
15 And they turned aside thither, to go in [and] to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat down in a street of the city: for [there was] no man that took them into his house to lodge.
Ils tournèrent de ce côté, dans l’intention de coucher à Ghibea; on entra dans la ville, on s’assit sur la place, mais personne ne leur offrit l’hospitalité pour la nuit.
16 And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at evening, who [was] also of mount Ephraim; and he dwelt in Gibeah: but the men of the place [were] Benjaminites.
Survint un vieillard, qui rentrait, ce même soir, de son travail des champs; c’était un homme de la montagne d’Ephraïm, domicilié à Ghibea, dont les habitants étaient Benjamites.
17 And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a way-faring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?
En levant les yeux, le vieillard remarqua ce voyageur sur la place publique, et il lui demanda: "Où vas-tu? D’Où viens-tu?"
18 And he said to him, We [are] passing from Beth-lehem-Judah towards the side of mount Ephraim; from thence [am] I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I [am now] going to the house of the LORD; and there [is] no man that receiveth me into [his] house.
L’Autre lui répondit: "Nous nous rendons de Bethléem-en-Juda à l’extrémité du mont d’Ephraïm, d’où je suis, et d’où j’étais allé à Bethléem; c’est vers la maison du Seigneur que je me dirige, et personne ne me recueille chez soi!
19 Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man [which is] with thy servants: [there is] no want of any thing:
Du reste, nous avons de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes, du pain et du vin pour moi, pour ta servante et pour le jeune homme qui accompagne tes serviteurs; nous ne manquons de rien."
20 And the old man said, Peace [be] with thee; however, [let] all thy wants [lie] upon me; only lodge not in the street.
"Sois le bienvenu, dit le vieillard; tout ce qui peut te faire faute, je m’en charge; je ne veux pas que tu couches sur la voie publique."
21 So he brought him into his house, and gave provender to the asses: and they washed their feet and ate and drank.
Il le fit entrer chez lui et donna la provende aux ânes; et les voyageurs lavèrent leurs pieds, mangèrent et burent.
22 [Now] as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house on all sides, [and] beat at the door, and spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thy house, that we may know him.
Tandis qu’ils se délectaient, voici que les gens de la ville, des hommes dépravés, investirent la maison, frappant à la porte, et criant au vieillard, au maître du logis: "Fais sortir l’homme qui est venu chez toi, que nous le connaissions!"
23 And the man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, Nay, my brethren, [nay], I pray you, do not [so] wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this folly.
Le maître du logis sortit à leur appel et leur dit: "Non, mes frères, de grâce, n’agissez pas si méchamment! Puisque cet homme est venu sous mon toit, ne commettez pas une telle infamie!
24 Behold, [here] is my daughter, a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good to you: but to this man do not so vile a thing.
J’Ai une fille encore vierge, il a une concubine, je vais vous les livrer; abusez d’elles, traitez-les comme il vous plaira, mais ne commettez pas sur cet homme une action si odieuse."
25 But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth to them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
Mais on ne voulut pas l’écouter. Alors le voyageur prit sa concubine et la leur abandonna dans la rue. Et eux abusèrent d’elle, la brutalisèrent toute la nuit et ne la lâchèrent que le matin, comme l’aube se levait.
26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord [was], till it was light.
Aux approches du matin, cette femme vint tomber à l’entrée de la maison où était son maître, et resta là jusqu’au jour.
27 And her lord rose in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and behold, the woman his concubine had fallen down [at] the door of the house, and her hands [were] upon the threshhold.
Le matin venu, celui-ci se leva, ouvrit la porte de la maison, et il sortait pour continuer son voyage lorsqu’il vit cette femme, sa concubine, étendue à l’entrée, les mains sur le seuil.
28 And he said to her, Rise, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her upon an ass, and the man rose, and went to his place.
"Lève-toi et partons!" lui dit-il… Point de réponse… Alors il la chargea sur l’un des ânes, et se mit en route pour sa demeure.
29 And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the borders of Israel.
Arrivé chez lui, il prit un couteau, et, saisissant le corps de sa concubine, le divisa par membres en douze morceaux, qu’il envoya dans tout le territoire d’Israël.
30 And it was so, that all that saw it, said, There hath been no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came from the land of Egypt to this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak [your minds].
Et quiconque les voyait s’écriait: "Pareille chose ne s’est pas faite, ne s’est pas vue, depuis le jour où Israël sortit du pays d’Egypte jusqu’à ce jour! Il faut le prendre à cœur, il faut aviser et prononcer!"
