Job 38
1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
Et l'Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit:
2 Who [is] this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
Qui est-ce qui obscurcit mes décrets par des discours dénués d'intelligence?
3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
Eh bien! ceins tes reins, comme un homme! puis je te questionnerai, et tu m'instruiras.
4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
Où étais-tu, quand je fondai la terre? Indique-le, si tu as vraiment la science!
5 Who hath laid the measures of it, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Qui est-ce qui en fixa la dimension, que tu saches, ou étendit sur elle le cordeau?
6 Upon what are the foundations of it fastened? or who laid its corner stone;
Quel est le support jusqu'où ses bases plongent? Ou qui est-ce qui en a posé la pierre angulaire,
7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
aux accords unanimes des étoiles du matin, aux acclamations de tous les Fils de Dieu?
8 Or [who] shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, [as if] it had issued out of the womb?
Et qui est-ce qui enferma la mer entre des portes, quand elle fit éruption du sein maternel;
9 When I made a cloud its garment, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it,
quand je lui donnai la nuée pour manteau, et les sombres vapeurs pour lui servir de langes;
10 And broke up for it my decreed [place], and set bars and doors,
quand je lui prescrivis ma loi, et que j'établis ses barres et ses portes,
11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed.
et que je dis: Jusqu'ici tu viendras, et pas plus avant! et ici s'arrêtera l'orgueil de tes vagues?
12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; [and] caused the day-spring to know its place;
De ton vivant as-tu commandé au matin, et fait connaître à l'aurore le lieu d'où elle part,
13 That it might take hold of the ends of earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
pour saisir la terre par ses bords? Alors les impies en sont balayés,
14 It is turned as clay [to] the seal; and they stand as a garment.
alors la terre prend une face nouvelle, telle que l'argile qui reçoit une empreinte, et toutes choses paraissent comme pour la vêtir;
15 And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the high arm shall be broken.
alors les impies perdent la clarté qu'ils aiment, et le bras qu'ils ont levé déjà, se brise.
16 Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
As-tu pénétré jusqu'aux sources des mers, et au fond de l'abîme as-tu porté tes pas?
17 Have the gates of death been opened to thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shades of death?
Les portes de la mort te furent-elles découvertes? As-tu vu les portes de la sombre mort?
18 Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
Ton regard embrasse-t-il les contours de la terre? Raconte, si tu sais toutes ces choses!
19 Where [is] the way [where] light dwelleth? and [as for] darkness, where [is] its place,
Quelle route mène où la lumière habite? et la nuit, où fait-elle son séjour?
20 That thou shouldest take it to its bound, and that thou shouldest know the paths [to] its house?
Iras-tu les chercher l'une et l'autre, pour les amener chacune à leurs limites? Et connais-tu le chemin de leur demeure?
21 Knowest thou [it], because thou wast then born? or [because] the number of thy days [is] great?
Tu le sais! car alors tu étais déjà né! et le nombre de tes jours est immense!
22 Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
As-tu pénétré jusqu'aux dépôts de la neige, et as-tu vu les dépôts de la grêle,
23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
que je réserve pour les temps du désastre, pour le jour du combat et de la bataille?
24 By what way is the light parted, [which] scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
Quel chemin mène aux lieux où la lumière se divise, d'où le vent d'Est se répand sur la terre?
25 Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
Qui a fait ces conduits qui éparpillent la pluie, et a tracé une route à la foudre bruyante,
26 To cause it to rain on the earth, [where] no man [is]; [on] the wilderness in which [there is] no man;
afin d'arroser une terre inhabitée, une steppe où il n'y a pas un humain,
27 To satisfy the desolate and waste [ground]; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
afin d'abreuver les lieux déserts et solitaires, et de fertiliser le sol qui donne le gazon?
28 Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
La pluie a-t-elle un père? Ou qui est-ce qui engendra les gouttes de la rosée?
29 Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
Du sein de qui la glace sort-elle? et qui est-ce qui produit le givre du ciel?
30 The waters are hid as [with] a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
Comme la pierre, les eaux se condensent, et la surface de l'abîme est enchaînée.
31 Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
As-tu formé le lien qui unit les Pléiades? Ou peux-tu détacher les chaînes d'Orion?
32 Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in its season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with its sons?
Fais-tu paraître en leur temps les signes du Zodiaque? Ou conduis-tu Arcture avec son cortège?
33 Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set its dominion on the earth?
Connais-tu les lois des Cieux? Les as-tu mis à même d'influer sur la terre?
34 Canst thou lift thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
Parles-tu à la nue avec autorité, et te couvre-t-elle aussitôt d'une eau abondante?
35 Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say to thee, Here we [are]?
Lances-tu des foudres, et partent-elles, et disent-elles: Nous voici?
36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
Qui a mis une sagesse dans les sombres nuages, et a donné aux météores une intelligence?
37 Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
Qui a calculé les nuées avec sagesse? Et qui est-ce qui incline les urnes des Cieux,
38 When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
quand la poussière coule comme un métal en fonte, et que les glèbes se collent l'une à l'autre?
39 Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
Pour la lionne vas-tu chasser une proie? et assouvis-tu la faim des lionceaux,
40 When they couch in [their] dens, [and] abide in the covert to lie in wait?
quand ils sont blottis dans leurs repaires, ou dans leurs tanières, tapis en embuscade?
41 Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry to God, they wander for want of food.
Qui est-ce qui procure au corbeau sa pâture, quand ses petits poussent vers Dieu leurs cris, et errent affamés?
