Job 35

1 Elihu spoke moreover, and said,

Eliu prit de nouveau la parole et dit:

2 Thinkest thou this to be right, [that] thou saidst, My righteousness [is] more than God's?

Crois-tu que ce soit là de la justice, de dire: « J'ai raison contre Dieu? »

3 For thou saidst, What advantage will it be to thee? [and], What profit shall I have, [if I be cleansed] from my sin?

Car tu as dit: « Que me sert mon innocence, qu'ai-je de plus que si j'avais péché? »

4 I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee.

Moi, je vais te répondre, et à tes amis en même temps.

5 Look to the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds [which] are higher than thou.

Considère les cieux et regarde; vois les nuées: elles sont plus hautes que toi!...

6 If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or [if] thy transgressions are multiplied, what doest thou to him?

Si tu pèches, quel tort lui causes-tu? Si tes offenses se multiplient, que lui fais-tu?

7 If thou art righteous, what givest thou to him? or what receiveth he from thy hand?

Si tu es juste, que lui donnes-tu? Que reçoit-il de ta main?

8 Thy wickedness [may hurt] a man as thou [art]: and thy righteousness [may profit] the son of man.

Ton iniquité ne peut nuire qu'à tes semblables, ta justice n'est utile qu'au fils de l'homme.

9 By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make [the oppressed] to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.

Des malheureux gémissent sous la violence des vexations, et crient sous la main des puissants.

10 But none saith, Where [is] God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;

Mais nul ne dit: « Où est Dieu, mon Créateur, qui donne à la nuit des chants de joie,

11 Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

qui nous a faits plus intelligents que les animaux de la terre, plus sages que les oiseaux du ciel. »

12 There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.

Ils crient alors, sans être exaucés, sous l'orgueilleuse tyrannie des méchants.

13 Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.

Dieu n'exauce pas les discours insensés, le Tout-Puissant ne les regarde pas.

14 Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, [yet] judgment [is] before him; therefore trust thou in him.

Quand tu lui dis: « Tu ne vois pas ce qui se passe, » ta cause est devant lui; attends son jugement.

15 But now, because [it is] not [so], he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth [it] not in great extremity:

Mais, parce que sa colère ne sévit pas encore, et qu'il semble ignorer sa folie,

16 Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.

Job prête sa bouche à de vaines paroles, et se répand en discours insensés.
