Exodus 1
1 Now these [are] the names of the children of Israel, who came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.
Voici les noms des enfants d'Israël venus en Egypte; — ils y vinrent avec Jacob, chacun avec sa famille —:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
Ruben, Siméon, Lévi, Juda,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
Issachar, Zabulon, Benjamin,
4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
Dan, Nephtali, Gad et Aser.
5 And all the souls that descended from Jacob, were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt [already].
Toutes les personnes issues de Jacob étaient au nombre de soixante-dix, et Joseph était déjà en Egypte.
6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
Joseph mourut, ainsi que tous ses frères et toute cette génération.
7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and became exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
Les enfants d'Israël furent féconds et multiplièrent; ils devinrent nombreux et très puissants, et le pays en fut rempli.
8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.
Il s'éleva sur l'Egypte un nouveau roi qui ne connaissait pas Joseph.
9 And he said to his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel [are] more and mightier than we.
Il dit à son peuple: " Voici que les enfants d'Israël forment un peuple plus nombreux et plus puissant que nous.
10 Come, let us deal wisely with them: lest they multiply, and it shall come to pass, that when there falleth out any war, they will join with our enemies, and fight against us, and depart from the land.
Allons! Prenons des précautions contre lui, de peur qu'il ne s'accroisse, et que, une guerre survenant, il ne se joigne à nos ennemis pour nous combattre, et ne sorte ensuite du pays. "
11 Therefore they set over them task-masters, to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure-cities, Pithom, and Raamses.
Les Egyptiens établirent donc sur Israël des chefs de corvée, afin de l'accabler par des travaux pénibles. C'est ainsi qu'il bâtit des villes pour servir de magasins à Pharaon, savoir Pithom et Ramsès.
12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
Mais plus on l'accablait, plus il multipliait et s'accroissait, et l'on prit en aversion les enfants d'Israël.
13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor.
Les Egyptiens firent travailler les enfants d'Israël par force;
14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service in which they made them serve, [was] with rigor.
ils leur rendaient la vie amère par de rudes travaux, mortier, briques et toute sorte de travaux des champs, tout le travail qu'ils leur imposaient avec dureté.
15 And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives (of which the name of one [was] Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah: )
Le roi d'Egypte parla aussi aux sages-femmes des Hébreux, dont l'une se nommait Séphora, et l'autre Phua.
16 And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see [them] upon the stools; if it [shall be] a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it [shall be] a daughter, then she shall live.
Il leur dit: " Quand vous accoucherez les femmes des Hébreux, et que vous les verrez sur le double siège, si c'est un fils, faites-le mourir; si c'est une fille, elle peut vivre. "
17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male-children alive.
Mais les sages-femmes craignirent Dieu, et ne firent pas comme leur avait dit le roi d'Egypte; elles laissèrent vivre les garçons.
18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the male-children alive?
Le roi d'Egypte fit appeler les sages-femmes et leur dit: " Pourquoi avez-vous agi ainsi, et avez-vous laissé vivre les garçons? "
19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women [are] not as the Egyptian women: for they [are] lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in to them.
Les sages-femmes répondirent à Pharaon: " C'est que les femmes des Hébreux ne ressemblent pas aux Egyptiennes: elles sont vigoureuses, et elles accouchent avant l'arrivée de la sage-femme. "
20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and became very mighty.
Et Dieu fit du bien aux sages-femmes, et le peuple devint nombreux et extrêmement fort.
21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
Parce que les sages-femmes avaient craint Dieu, Dieu fit prospérer leur maison.
22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
Alors Pharaon donna cet ordre à tout son peuple: " Vous jetterez dans le fleuve tout fils qui naîtra et vous laisserez vivre toutes les filles. "
