Ecclesiastes 12

1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

Lembra-te do teu Creador nos dias da tua mocidade, antes que venham os maus dias, e cheguem os annos dos quaes venhas a dizer: Não tenho n'elles contentamento:

2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, are not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

Antes que se escureçam o sol, e a luz, e a lua, e as estrellas, e tornem a vir as nuvens depois da chuva:

3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows shall be darkened,

No dia em que tremerem os guardas da casa, e se encurvarem os fortes varões, e cessarem os moedores, por já serem poucos, e se escurecerem os que olham pelas janellas;

4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding shall be low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of music shall be brought low.

E as duas portas da rua se fecharem por causa do baixo ruido da moedura, e se levantar á voz das aves, e todas as vozes do canto se encurvarem:

5 Also [when] they shall be afraid of [that which is] high, and fears [shall be] in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

Como tambem quando temerem os logares altos, e houver espantos no caminho, e florescer a amendoeira, e o gafanhoto o carregar, e perecer o appetite, porque o homem se vae á sua eterna casa, e os pranteadores andarão rodeando pela praça.

6 Or ever the silver cord shall be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

Antes que se quebre a cadeia de prata, e se despedace o copo d'oiro, e se despedace o cantaro junto á fonte, e se despedace a roda junto ao poço,

7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return to God who gave it.

E o pó voltar á terra, como o era, e o espirito voltar a Deus, que o deu.

8 Vanity of vanities saith the preacher; all [is] vanity.

Vaidade de vaidade, diz o prégador, tudo é vaidade.

9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge: yes, he gave good heed, and sought out, [and] set in order many proverbs.

E, quanto mais o prégador foi sabio, tanto mais sabedoria ao povo ensinou, e attentou, e esquadrinhou, e compoz muitos proverbios.

10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and [that which was] written [was] upright, [even] words of truth.

Procurou o prégador achar palavras agradaveis; e o escripto é a rectidão, palavras de verdade.

11 The words of the wise [are] as goads, and as nails fastened [by] the masters of assemblies, [which] are given from one shepherd.

As palavras dos sabios são como aguilhões, e como pregos, bem affixados pelos mestres das congregações, que nos foram dados pelo unico Pastor.

12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books [there is] no end; and much study [is] a weariness of the flesh.

E, de mais d'isto, filho meu, attenta: não ha limite para fazer livros, e o muito estudar enfado é da carne.

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of man.

De tudo o que se tem ouvido, o fim da coisa é: Teme a Deus, e guarda os seus mandamentos; porque isto é o dever de todo o homem.

14 For God will bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether [it is] good, or whether [it is] evil.

Porque Deus ha de trazer a juizo toda a obra, e até tudo o que está encoberto, quer seja bom quer seja mau.
