Proverbs 20
1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whoever is deceived by it is not wise.
O vinho é escarnecedor, a bebida forte alvoraçadora; e todo aquele que neles errar nunca será sábio.
2 The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoever provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.
Como o bramido do leão é o terror do rei, o que o provoca a ira peca contra a sua própria alma.
3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
Honra é do homem desviar-se do pleito, mas todo o tolo se entremete nele.
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
O preguiçoso não lavrará por causa do inverno, pelo que mendigará na sega, porém nada receberá.
5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Como as águas profundas é o conselho no coração do homem; mas o homem de inteligência o tirará para fora.
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
Cada um da multidão dos homens apregoa a sua beneficência; porém o homem fiel, quem é o que o achará?
7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
O justo anda na sua sinceridade; bem-aventurados serão os seus filhos depois dele.
8 A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
Assentando-se o rei no trono do juízo, com os seus olhos dissipa todo o mal.
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
Quem pudera dizer: Purifiquei o meu coração, limpo estou de meu pecado!
10 Differing weights, and differing measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.
Duas sortes de peso, e duas sortes de medida, são abominação ao Senhor, tanto uma como outra.
11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work is pure, and whether it is right.
Até a criança se dará a conhecer pelas suas ações, se a sua obra será pura e reta
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
O ouvido que ouve, e o olho que vê, o Senhor os fez a ambos.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thy eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
Não ames o sono, para que não empobreças; abre os teus olhos, e te fartarás de pão
14 It is nothing, it is nothing, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
Nada vale, nada vale, dirá o comprador, mas, indo-se, então se gabará.
15 There is gold, and an abundance of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
Há ouro e abundância de rubins, mas os lábios do conhecimento são jóia preciosa.
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for an adulteress.
Quando alguém fica por fiador do estranho, toma-lhe a sua roupa, e o penhora pela estranha.
17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Suave é ao homem o pão de mentira, mas depois a sua boca se encherá de pedrinhas de areia.
18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
Cada pensamento com conselho se confirma, e com conselhos prudentes faze a guerra.
19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
O que anda murmurando descobre o segredo; pelo que com o que afaga com seus beiços não te entremetas.
20 Whoever curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
O que a seu pai ou a sua mãe amaldiçoar, apagar-se-lhe-á a sua lâmpada em trevas negras.
21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end of it shall not be blessed.
Adquirindo-se apressadamente a herança no princípio, o seu fim não será bendito.
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
Não digas: vingar-me-ei do mal: espera pelo Senhor, e ele te livrará.
23 Differing weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
Duas sortes de peso são abomináveis ao Senhor, e balanças enganosas não são boas.
24 Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
Os passos do homem são dirigidos pelo Senhor: o homem, pois, como entenderá o seu caminho?
25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
Laço é para o homem engulir o que é santo; e, feitos os votos, então inquirir.
26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
O rei sábio dissipa os ímpios e torna sobre eles a roda.
27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
A alma do homem é a lâmpada do Senhor, que esquadrinha todo o mais intimo do ventre.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upheld by mercy.
Benignidade e verdade guardam ao rei, e com benignidade sustem ele o seu trono.
29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.
O ornato dos mancebos é a sua força: e a beleza dos velhos as cãs.
30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.
Os vergões das feridas são a purificação dos maus, como também as pancadas que penetram até o mais intimo do ventre.
