Nehemiah 13

1 On that day they read in the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and in it was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever;

১সেই দিন লোকদের কাছে মোশির বইটি পড়া হল, তখন সেখানে দেখা গেল লেখা আছে, কোনো অম্মোনীয় বা মোয়াবীয় ঈশ্বরের লোকদের সমাজে কখনও যোগ দিতে পারবে না।

2 Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: but our God turned the curse into a blessing.

২এর কারণ হল, মোশির দিনের তারা খাবার ও জল নিয়ে ইস্রায়েলীয়দের কাছে যায় নি, বরং তারা তাদের অভিশাপ দেবার জন্য বিলিয়মকে ঘুষ দিয়েছিল। কিন্তু আমাদের ঈশ্বর সেই অভিশাপের বদলে আশীর্বাদ করলেন।

3 Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

৩লোকেরা ব্যবস্থার এই কথা শুনে বিদেশীদের সবাইকে ইস্রায়েলীয়দের সমাজ থেকে বাদ দিয়ে দিল।

4 And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied to Tobiah:

৪এর আগে যাজক ইলীয়াশীব, যাঁকে আমাদের ঈশ্বরের গৃহের ভান্ডার ঘরের ভার দেওয়া হয়েছিল, তিনি টোবিয়কে একটা বড় কামরা দিয়েছিলেন, কারণ টোবিয় ছিল তাঁর আত্মীয়;

5 And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where before they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.

৫সেই কামরায় আগে শস্য উৎসর্গের জিনিস, কুন্দুরু এবং উপাসনা ঘরের জিনিসপত্র রাখা হত। এছাড়া সেখানে লেবীয়, গায়ক ও রক্ষীদের জন্য নির্দেশ করা শস্যের, নতুন আঙ্গুর রসের ও তেলের দশমাংশ রাখা হত এবং যাজকদের যা দেওয়া হত তাও রাখা হত।

6 But in all this time I was not at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I came to the king, and after certain days I obtained leave of the king:

৬কিন্তু এই সব যখন হচ্ছিল তখন আমি যিরূশালেমে ছিলাম না, কারণ বাবিলের রাজা অর্তক্ষস্তের বত্রিশ বছরে আমি রাজার কাছে ফিরে গিয়েছিলাম। এর কিছুদিন পরে আমি রাজার অনুমতি নিয়ে যিরূশালেমে ফিরে আসলাম।

7 And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

৭ঈশ্বরের গৃহে টোবিয়কে একটা কামরা দিয়ে ইলীয়াশীব যে খারাপ কাজ করেছেন আমি যিরূশালেমে ফিরে এসে সেই বিষয় শুনলাম।

8 And it grieved me greatly: therefore I cast forth all the household goods of Tobiah out of the chamber.

৮এতে আমি ভীষণ বিরক্ত হয়ে টোবিয়ের সব জিনিসপত্র সেই কামরা থেকে ছুঁড়ে ফেলে দিলাম।

9 Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and there I brought again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.

৯তারপর আমার আদেশে সেই ঘরগুলো শুচি করা হল আর আমি ঈশ্বরের ঘরের জিনিসপত্র, শস্য উৎসর্গের জিনিস আর কুন্দুরু আবার সেখানে এনে রাখলাম।

10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, had fled every one to his field.

১০আমি এও জানতে পারলাম যে, গায়কদের ও অন্যান্য লেবীয়দের অংশ দেওয়া হয়নি বলে তারা তাদের সেবা কাজ ছেড়ে নিজের নিজের ভূমিতে ফিরে গেছে।

11 Then I contended with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

১১এতে আমি উঁচু পদের কর্মচারীদের তিরস্কার করে বললাম, “ঈশ্বরের গৃহকে কেন অবহেলা করা হয়েছে?” তারপর আমি সেই সব লেবীয়দের ডেকে একত্র করে তাদের নিজের নিজের পদে বহাল করলাম।

12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the treasuries.

১২তারপর যিহূদার সব লোক তাদের শস্যের, নতুন আঙ্গুর রসের ও তেলের দশমাংশ ভান্ডার ঘরে নিয়ে আসল।

13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were accounted faithful, and their office was to distribute to their brethren.

১৩যাজক শেলিমিয়, অধ্যাপক সাদোক ও পদায় নামে একজন লেবীয়কে আমি ভান্ডার ঘরের ভার দিলাম এবং সক্কুরের ছেলে, অর্থাৎ মত্তনিয়ের নাতি হাননকে তাঁদের সাহায্যকারী হিসাবে নিযুক্ত করলাম। কারণ সবাই এই লোকদের বিশ্বাসযোগ্য মনে করত। তাঁদের উপর তাঁদের গোষ্ঠী ভাইদের অংশ ভাগ করে দেওয়ার দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হল।

14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its offices.

১৪হে আমার ঈশ্বর, এই সব কাজের জন্য আমাকে মনে রেখো। আমার ঈশ্বরের গৃহ ও সেই গৃহের সেবা কাজের জন্য আমি বিশ্বস্তভাবে যা করেছি তা মুছে ফেলে দিয়ো না।

15 In those days I saw in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and putting them on donkeys; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day when they sold food.

১৫ঐ দিন আমি দেখলাম যিহূদার লোকেরা বিশ্রামবারে আঙ্গুর মাড়াইয়ের কাজ করছে ও ফসল আনছে এবং সেই ফসল, আঙ্গুর রস, আঙ্গুর ফল, ডুমুর এবং অন্য সব রকমের বোঝা তারা গাধার উপর চাপাচ্ছে। এছাড়া তারা বিশ্রামবারে ঐ সব যিরূশালেমে নিয়ে আসছে। তারা বিশ্রামবারে খাবার জিনিস বিক্রি করবার বিষয়ে আমি তাদের সাবধান করলাম।

16 There dwelt men of Tyre also in the city, who brought fish, and all kinds of wares, and sold on the sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

১৬যিরূশালেমে বাসকারী সোরের লোকেরা মাছ আর বিক্রি করবার অন্যান্য সব জিনিস এনে বিশ্রামবারে যিরূশালেমে যিহূদার লোকদের কাছে বিক্রি করছিল।

17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

১৭আমি তখন যিহূদার গণ্যমান্য লোকদের তিরস্কার করে বললাম, “তোমার বিশ্রামবার অপবিত্র করছ, এ কি খারাপ কাজ করছ?।

18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

১৮তোমাদের পূর্বপুরুষেরা কি সেই একই কাজ করত না? যার দরুন আমাদের ঈশ্বর আমাদের উপর ও এই শহরের উপর এই সব সর্বনাশ করেননি? আর এখন তোমরা বিশ্রামবারের পবিত্রতা নষ্ট করে ইস্রায়েলীয়দের উপর ঈশ্বরের আরও অসন্তোষ বাড়িয়ে তুলছ।”

19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and I set some of my servants at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.

১৯আমি এই আদেশ দিলাম যে, বিশ্রামবারের আরম্ভে যখন যিরূশালেমের দরজাগুলোর উপর সন্ধ্যার ছায়া নেমে আসবে তখন যেন দরজাগুলো বন্ধ করা হয় এবং বিশ্রামবার শেষ না হওয়া পর্যন্ত তা বন্ধ রাখা হয়। বিশ্রামবারে যাতে কোন বোঝা ভিতরে আনা না হয় তা দেখবার জন্য আমি আমার নিজের কয়েকজন কর্মচারীকে দরজাগুলোতে নিযুক্ত করলাম।

20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of wares lodged outside of Jerusalem once or twice.

২০এতে ব্যবসায়ীরা ও যারা সব রকম জিনিস বিক্রি করে তারা দুই একবার যিরূশালেমের বাইরে রাত কাটাল।

21 Then I testified against them, and said to them, Why lodge ye before the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth they came no more on the sabbath.

২১কিন্তু আমি তাদের সাক্ষ্য দিয়ে বললাম, “তোমরা দেওয়ালের কাছে কেন রাত কাটাচ্ছ? তোমরা যদি আবার এই কাজ কর তবে আমি তোমাদের বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা নেব।”

22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

২২সেই থেকে তারা আর বিশ্রামবারে আসত না। তারপর আমি লেবীয়দের আদেশ দিলাম যেন তারা নিজেদের শুচি করে এবং বিশ্রামবার পবিত্র রাখবার জন্য গিয়ে দরজাগুলো পাহারা দেয়। হে আমার ঈশ্বর, এর জন্যও তুমি আমাকে মনে রেখো এবং তোমার ব্যবস্থা অনুসারে আমাকে দয়া কর।

23 In those days also I saw Jews that had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:

২৩সেই দিন আমি এও দেখলাম যে, যিহূদার কোনো কোনো লোক অস্‌দোদীয়া, অম্মোনীয়া ও মোয়াবীয়া মেয়েদের বিয়ে করেছে।

24 And their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.

২৪তাদের মধ্যে অনেক ছেলেমেয়ে অর্ধেক অস্‌দোদীয় কিম্বা অন্যান্য জাতির ভাষায় কথা বলে। তারা যিহূদার ভাষায় কথা বলতে জানে না। নিজেদের জাতির ভাষা অনুসারে কথা বলে

25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters to your sons, or for yourselves.

২৫আমি তাদেরসঙ্গে বিবাদ করলাম, তাদের তিরস্কার করলাম। তাদের কয়েকজন লোককে আমি মারলাম এবং চুল উপড়ে ফেললাম। ঈশ্বরের নামে আমি তাদের দিয়ে এই শপথ করালাম যে, তারা বিদেশী ছেলেদের সঙ্গে তাদের মেয়েদের বিয়ে দেবে না এবং নিজেরা বা তাদের ছেলেরা বিদেশী মেয়েদের বিয়ে করবে না।

26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did foreign women cause to sin.

২৬“ইস্রায়েলের রাজা শলোমন এই রকম কাজ করে কি পাপ করেননি? অন্য কোনো জাতির মধ্যে তাঁর মত রাজা কেউই ছিলেন না এবং ঈশ্বর তাঁকে ভালবাসতেন আর তাঁকে সমস্ত ইস্রায়েলীয়দের উপর রাজা করেছিলেন, তবুও তিনি বিদেশী স্ত্রীলোকদের দরুন পাপ করেছিলেন।

27 Shall we then hearken to you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying foreign women?

২৭অতএব আমরা কি তোমাদের এই কথায় কান দেব যে, তোমরা বিদেশী মেয়েদেরকে বিয়ে করে আমাদের ঈশ্বরের বিরুদ্ধে অমান্য করবার জন্য এই সব মহাপাপ করবে?”

28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I drove him away from me.

২৮প্রধান মহাযাজক ইলীয়াশীবের ছেলে যিহোয়াদার এক ছেলে হোরোণীয় সন্‌বল্লটের জামাই ছিল। সেইজন্য আমি সেই ছেলেকে আমার কাছ থেকে তাড়িয়ে দিলাম।

29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

২৯হে আমার ঈশ্বর, এদের কথা মনে রেখো, কারণ এরা যাজকের পদএবং যাজক ও লেবীয়দের নিয়ম অপবিত্র করেছে।

30 Thus I cleansed them from all strangers, and appointed the duties of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;

৩০এই ভাবে আমি সকলের মধ্য থেকে বিদেশীয় সব কিছু দূর করে দিলাম। পরে যাজক ও লেবীয়দের কাজ অনুসারে তাদের প্রত্যেকের কাজ ভাগ করে দিলাম।

31 And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

৩১এছাড়া দিন মত কাঠ ও প্রথমে তোলা ফসল আনবার জন্যও লোক নিযুক্ত করলাম। হে আমার ঈশ্বর, আমার মঙ্গল করবার জন্য আমাকে স্মরণ কোরো।
