Judges 1
1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
Et après la mort de Josué les enfants d'Israël consultèrent l'Éternel en disant: Lequel d'entre nous doit marcher le premier contre les Cananéens pour les attaquer?
2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
Et l'Éternel dit: Juda marchera. Voici, j'ai livré le pays entre ses mains.
3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
Et Juda dit à Siméon, son frère: Accompagne-moi pour une expédition dans mon lot, et attaquons les Cananéens; à mon tour je t'accompagnerai pour une expédition dans ton lot. Alors Siméon se mit en campagne avec lui.
4 And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
Et Juda s'avança, et l'Éternel livra entre leurs mains les Cananéens et les Perizzites, et ils les défirent à Bézek au nombre de dix mille hommes.
5 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
Et ils trouvèrent Adoni-Bézek à Bézek, et l'ayant attaqué ils battirent les Cananéens et les Perizzites.
6 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
Et Adoni-Bézek s'enfuit et ils le poursuivirent et le prirent, et ils lui coupèrent les pouces aux mains et aux pieds.
7 And Adonibezek said, seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their food under my table: as I have done, so God hath repaid me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
Alors Adoni-Bézek dit: Soixante-dix Rois ayant les pouces coupés aux mains et aux pieds en étaient à ramasser sous ma table: ce que j'ai fait, Dieu me le rend. Et ils l'emmenèrent à Jérusalem, et il mourut là.
8 Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
Et les enfants de Juda attaquèrent Jérusalem, et la prirent, et la frappèrent avec le tranchant de l'épée et livrèrent la ville aux flammes.
9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt on the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
Ensuite les fils de Juda descendirent pour attaquer les Cananéens habitant la Montagne et le Midi et le Pays-bas.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba: ) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
Et Juda marcha contre les Cananéens établis à Hébron (or le nom de Hébron était jadis Ville d'Arba), et ils défirent Sesaï et Ahiman et Thalmaï.
11 And from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:
Et de là ils marchèrent contre les habitants de Debir; or le nom de Debir était jadis Kiriath-Sépher.
12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter for a wife.
Et Caleb dit: A celui qui réduira et prendra Kiriath-Sépher, je donnerai pour femme Achsa ma fille.
13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife.
Et Othniel, fils de Kénaz, frère cadet de Caleb, la prit; et il lui donna pour femme sa fille Achsa.
14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she got off her donkey; and Caleb said to her, What wilt thou?
Et à son entrée chez lui elle l'incita à demander un champ à son père; et de dessus l'âne qu'elle montait, elle mit pied à terre. Alors Caleb lui dit: Qu'as-tu à dire?
15 And she said to him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
Et elle lui dit: Accorde-moi un bienfait! puisque tu m'as donné une terre du midi, donne-moi aussi des sources d'eau. Alors Caleb lui donna les sources supérieures et les sources inférieures.
16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
Et les fils de Kéni, beau-père de Moïse, firent depuis la Ville des Palmiers avec les fils de Juda une campagne dans le désert de Juda situé au midi d'Arad, et ils allèrent s'établir avec le peuple.
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
Et Juda se mit en marche avec Siméon, son frère, et ils défirent les Cananéens qui habitaient Tséphath, et ils la dévouèrent, et donnèrent à la ville le nom de Horma (anathème).
18 Also Judah took Gaza with its land, and Askelon with its land, and Ekron with its land.
Et Juda prit Gaza et son territoire, et Askalon et son territoire, et Ekron et son territoire.
19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
Et l'Éternel fut avec Juda de sorte qu'il se rendit maître de la montagne, car il ne put expulser les habitants de la plaine qui avaient des chars ferrés.
20 And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses said: and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.
Et ils donnèrent Hébron à Caleb, d'après ce que Moïse avait dit, et il en chassa les trois fils de Anak.
21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
Et les fils de Benjamin n'expulsèrent point les Jébusites établis à Jérusalem; et les Jébusites ont habité Jérusalem avec les fils de Benjamin jusqu'aujourd'hui.
22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.
Et la maison de Joseph aussi fit sa campagne contre Béthel, et l'Éternel fut avec eux.
23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)
Et la maison de Joseph fit faire une reconnaissance à Béthel (or le nom de la ville était jadis Luz).
24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will show thee mercy.
Et les vedettes aperçurent un homme qui sortait de la ville, et lui dirent: Indique-nous l'accès de la ville et nous te montrerons de la bonté.
25 And when he showed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
Et il leur indiqua l'accès de la ville. Et ils frappèrent la ville avec le tranchant de l'épée; mais ils laissèrent échapper cet homme et toute sa famille.
26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name of it Luz: which is its name to this day.
Et cet homme passa dans le pays des Héthiens et bâtit une ville qu'il appela du nom de Luz; tel a été son nom jusqu'aujourd'hui.
27 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and its towns, nor Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
Et Manassé ne déposséda point Beth-Séan et ses annexes, ni Thaanach et ses annexes, ni Dor et ses annexes, ni Jibléam et ses annexes, ni Megiddo et ses annexes, et les Cananéens persistèrent à se maintenir dans cette contrée.
28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they subjected the Canaanites to forced labour, and did not utterly drive them out.
Et lorsque Israël se fut consolidé, il soumit les Cananéens à la corvée, mais quant à les chasser, il ne le fit pas.
29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
Et Ephraïm n'expulsa point les Cananéens établis à Gézer, les Cananéens demeurèrent donc parmi eux à Gézer.
30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became forced labourers.
Zabulon n'expulsa point les habitants de Kitron, ni les habitants de Nahalol; les Cananéens demeurèrent donc parmi eux, mais ils devinrent corvéables.
31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:
Asser n'expulsa point les habitants de Acco, ni les habitants de Sidon et d'Ahelab et d'Achsib et de Helba et d'Aphik et de Rehob;
32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.
et ainsi les Assérites demeurèrent au milieu des Cananéens, habitants du pays, car ils ne les expulsèrent pas.
33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became forced labourers to them.
Nephthali n'expulsa point les habitants de Beth-Semès, ni les habitants de Beth-Anath, et il demeura au milieu des Cananéens, habitants du pays. Mais les habitants de Beth-Semès et de Beth-Anath furent soumis par lui à la corvée.
34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan to the mountain: for they would not allow them to come down to the valley:
Et les Amoréens repoussèrent les Danites dans la montagne, car ils ne leur permirent pas de descendre dans la vallée.
35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became forced labourers.
Et les Amoréens persistèrent à habiter Har-Herès, Ajalon et Saalbim; mais ils sentirent le poids de la main de la maison de Joseph et devinrent corvéables.
36 And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
Et le territoire des Amoréens s'étendait de la hauteur des Scorpions, de Séla en haut.
