Jeremiah 36
1 And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
Et la quatrième année de Jéhojakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, cette parole fut adressée à Jérémie par l'Éternel, qui dit:
2 Take thee a scroll of a book, and write in it all the words that I have spoken to thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to thee, from the days of Josiah, even to this day.
Prends un volume, et y écris toutes les paroles que je t'ai dites touchant Israël et Juda, et touchant tous les peuples, depuis le jour où je te parlai dans le temps de Josias jusques aujourd'hui.
3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do to them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.
Peut-être la maison de Juda entendant parler de tout le mal que je pense à leur faire, chacun abandonnera sa voie mauvaise, et je pardonnerai leur iniquité et leur péché.
4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which he had spoken to him, upon a scroll of a book.
Alors Jérémie fit venir Baruch, fils de Nérija, et Baruch écrivit sous la dictée de Jérémie, dans un volume, toutes les paroles que l'Éternel lui avait dites.
5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut up; I cannot go into the house of the LORD:
Et Jérémie donna cet ordre à Baruch, et lui dit: Je suis retenu ici, et je ne puis me rendre à la maison de l'Éternel;
6 Therefore go thou, and read in the scroll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD’S house upon the day of fasting: and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.
va donc, et lis dans le volume ce que tu as écrit sous ma dictée, les paroles de l'Éternel, aux oreilles du peuple, dans la maison de l'Éternel, le jour du jeûne, et lis-les aussi aux oreilles de tous les Juifs venus de leurs villes.
7 It may be they will present their supplication before the LORD, and will return every one from his evil way: for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced against this people.
Peut-être supplieront-ils humblement l'Éternel, et quitteront-ils chacun leur mauvaise voie; car grande est la colère et l'indignation dont l'Éternel menace ce peuple.
8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of the LORD in the LORD’S house.
Et Baruch, fils de Nérija, exécuta dans son entier l'ordre que lui avait donné Jérémie, le prophète, de lire dans le livre les paroles de l'Éternel dans la maison de l'Éternel.
9 And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem.
Et la cinquième année de Jéhojakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, le neuvième mois, on publia un jeûne devant l'Éternel; tout le peuple de Jérusalem, et tout le peuple vint des villes de Juda à Jérusalem.
10 Then Baruch read in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the entrance of the new gate of the LORD’S house, in the ears of all the people.
Alors Baruch lut dans le livre les paroles de Jérémie dans la maison de l'Éternel, dans la chambre de Gémaria, fils de Schaphan, le scribe, dans le vestibule supérieur, à l'entrée de la Porte neuve de la maison de l'Éternel, aux oreilles de tout le peuple.
11 When Michaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all the words of the LORD,
Et Michée, fils de Gémaria, fils de Schaphan, ayant entendu toutes les paroles de l'Éternel lues dans le livre,
12 Then he went down into the king’s house, into the scribe’s chamber: and, lo, all the princes sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.
descendit à la maison du roi, dans la chambre du scribe; et voici, tous les princes y étaient assis, Elisama, le scribe, et Délaïa, fils de Sémaïa, et Elnathan, fils de Hachbor, et Gémaria, fils de Schaphan, et Sédécias, fils d'Ananias, et tous les princes.
13 Then Michaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people.
Et Michée leur rapporta toutes les paroles qu'il avait entendues, quand Baruch lisait dans le livre aux oreilles du peuple.
14 Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, Take in thy hand the scroll in which thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand, and came to them.
Alors tous les princes députèrent à Baruch Jehoudi, fils de Néthania, fils de Sélémia, fils de Couschi, pour lui dire: Prends en ta main le livre dans lequel tu as lu aux oreilles du peuple, et viens! Et Baruch, fils de Nérija, prit en sa main le livre, et vint auprès d'eux.
15 And they said to him, Sit down now, and read it in our ears. So Baruch read it in their ears.
Et ils lui dirent: Assieds-toi, et lis-le à nos oreilles. Et Baruch lut à leurs oreilles.
16 Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they were afraid both one and another, and said to Baruch, We will surely tell the king of all these words.
Et à l'ouïe de toutes ces paroles, effrayés ils s'entre-regardèrent, et dirent à Baruch: Nous rapporterons au roi toutes ces paroles.
17 And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How didst thou write all these words at his mouth?
Et ils interrogèrent Baruch, et dirent: Dis-nous donc comment tu as écrit toutes ces paroles sous sa dictée!
18 Then Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.
Et Baruch leur dit: De sa bouche il me dictait toutes ces paroles, et je les écrivais dans ce livre avec de l'encre.
19 Then said the princes to Baruch, Go, hide thyself, thou and Jeremiah; and let no man know where ye are.
Alors les princes dirent à Baruch: Va, et te cache, ainsi que Jérémie, et que personne ne sache où vous êtes!
20 And they went in to the king into the court, but they laid up the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the ears of the king.
Puis ils se rendirent auprès du roi dans la cour, et ils déposèrent le livre dans la chambre d'Elisama, le scribe, et ils exposèrent toutes ces choses aux oreilles du roi.
21 So the king sent Jehudi to bring the scroll: and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes who stood beside the king.
Alors le roi envoya Jehoudi pour prendre le volume; et il le prit dans la chambre d'Elisama, le scribe; et Jehoudi le lut aux oreilles du roi, et aux oreilles de tous les princes qui entouraient le roi.
22 Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him.
Or le roi habitait la maison d'hiver au neuvième mois, et le brasier brûlait devant lui.
23 And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the scribe’s penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.
Et lorsque Jehoudi en eut lu trois ou quatre colonnes, le roi le coupa avec un canif de scribe, et le jeta dans le feu du brasier, jusqu'à ce que le volume fût consumé en entier par le feu dans le brasier.
24 Yet they were not afraid, nor tore their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.
Et ils ne furent point effrayés, et ne déchirèrent point leurs habits, ni le roi, ni aucun de ses serviteurs, à l'ouïe de toutes ces paroles.
25 Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the scroll: but he would not hear them.
Bien plus, Elnathan, et Délaïa, et Gémaria intercédèrent auprès du roi, pour qu'il ne brûlât pas le volume; mais il ne les écouta point.
26 But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but the LORD hid them.
Et le roi ordonna à Jéraméel, fils de Hammélech, et à Séraïa, fils d'Asriel, et à Sélémia, fils d'Abdiel, de saisir Baruch le scribe, et Jérémie le prophète; mais l'Éternel les cacha.
27 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the scroll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,
Et la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie, après que le roi eut brûlé le volume et les paroles que Baruch avait écrites sous la dictée de Jérémie, et Il dit:
28 Take thee again another scroll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah hath burned.
Prends encore un autre volume, et y écris toutes les premières paroles qui étaient dans le premier volume qu'a brûlé Jéhojakim, roi de Juda.
29 And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast burned this scroll, saying, Why hast thou written in it, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from there man and beast?
Et quant à Jéhojakim, roi de Juda, tu lui diras: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Tu as brûlé ce volume en disant: Pourquoi y as-tu écrit ces paroles: Le roi de Babel viendra détruire ce pays et en exterminer les hommes et les bestiaux?
30 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.
C'est pourquoi, ainsi prononce l'Éternel sur Jéhojakim, roi de Juda: Il n'aura point de fils assis sur le trône de David, et son cadavre sera jeté pour être exposé à l'ardeur du jour et au froid de la nuit;
31 And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they hearkened not.
et je punirai sur lui, et sur sa race, et sur ses serviteurs leur crime, et je ferai venir sur eux, et sur les habitants de Jérusalem, et sur les hommes de Juda, tous les maux dont je les ai menacés, sans qu'ils aient écouté. –
32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote in it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were besides added to them many like words.
Et Jérémie prit un autre volume et le donna à Baruch, fils de Nérija, le scribe, lequel y écrivit sous la dictée de Jérémie toutes les paroles du livre qu'avait brûlé au feu Jéhojakim, roi de Juda; et il fut ajouté beaucoup d'autres paroles semblables à celles-là.
