Deuteronomy 17

1 Thou shalt not sacrifice to the LORD thy God any bull, or sheep, in which is blemish, or any defect: for that is an abomination to the LORD thy God.

Tu ne sacrifieras à l'Éternel, ton Dieu, ni bœuf, ni brebis qui ait un défaut, un vice quelconque, car c'est l'abomination de l'Éternel, ton Dieu.

2 If there shall be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant,

S'il se rencontre au milieu de vous dans l'une des villes que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donnera, un homme ou une femme qui fasse ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, en violant son alliance

3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;

et en allant servir d'autres dieux, et les adorer, et le soleil ou la lune ou toute l'armée des cieux, ce qui est contre mon ordre;

4 And it shall be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it is true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:

et si l'on t'en fait rapport et que tu en sois informé, dresse une enquête exacte; et si c'est la vérité et que le fait soit constaté et que cette abomination ait été commise en Israël,

5 Then shalt thou bring forth to thy gates that man or that woman, who have committed that wicked thing, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.

tu traduiras à tes Portes cet homme ou cette femme qui aura commis ce crime, l'homme ou la femme, et tu les lapideras à mort.

6 At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.

Celui qui mérite la mort, sera mis à mort sur la déposition de deux ou de trois témoins; il ne sera pas mis à mort sur la déposition d'un témoin unique.

7 The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt remove the evil from among you.

La main des témoins se lèvera la première contre lui pour le faire mourir, et la main de tout le peuple ensuite. Ainsi vous ôterez le mal du milieu de vous.

8 If there shall arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy gates: then shalt thou arise, and go up to the place which the LORD thy God shall choose;

Si à tes Portes tu as une question trop difficile à juger, entre meurtre et meurtre, entre grief et grief, entre coup et coup, dans des cas litigieux, lève-toi et monte au lieu qu'aura choisi l'Éternel, ton Dieu,

9 And thou shalt come to the priests the Levites, and to the judge that shall be in those days, and enquire; and they shall show thee the sentence of judgment:

et adresse-toi aux Prêtres, Lévites, et au Juge qu'il y aura à cette époque, et enquiers-toi, et ils t'exposeront le point de droit.

10 And thou shalt do according to the sentence, which they of that place which the LORD shall choose shall show thee; and thou shalt observe to do according to all that they inform thee:

Puis agis suivant le point de droit qu'ils t'auront exposé de ce lieu-là choisi par l'Éternel, et tu auras soin d'agir d'après tout ce qu'ils t'auront enseigné.

11 According to the sentence of the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do: thou shalt not decline from the sentence which they shall show thee, to the right hand, nor to the left.

Tu agiras d'après la loi qu'ils t'enseigneront, et la règle de droit, qu'ils te diront, tu ne t'écarteras du point de droit qu'ils t'exposeront, ni à droite ni à gauche.

12 And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not hearken to the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God, or to the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt remove the evil from Israel.

Et l'homme qui montrerait assez de présomption pour ne pas écouter le Prêtre qui est là en service devant l'Éternel, ton Dieu, ou auprès du Juge, cet homme-là mourra.

13 And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more presumptuously.

Ote ainsi le mal du sein d'Israël, et tout le peuple entendra et craindra, et n'aura plus cette audace dans la suite.

14 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell in it, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;

Lorsque tu seras entré dans le pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne, et que tu l'auras conquis, et y seras établi, et que tu diras: Je veux me donner un Roi à l'exemple de toutes les nations qui m'environnent,

15 Thou shalt surely set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, who is not thy brother.

tu te donneras pour Roi celui que choisira l'Éternel, ton Dieu; c'est parmi tes frères que tu prendras le Roi à préposer sur toi; tu ne pourras préposer sur toi un homme du dehors qui ne soit pas ton frère.

16 But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said to you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.

Seulement qu'il n'ait pas une multitude de chevaux et ne ramène pas le peuple en Egypte pour se procurer beaucoup de chevaux; car l'Éternel vous a dit: Vous ne reprendrez plus ce chemin.

17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart may turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

Et qu'il n'ait pas un grand nombre de femmes, afin que son cœur ne se détourne pas, non plus qu'une très grande quantité d'or et d'argent.

18 And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites:

Et lorsqu'il sera assis sur le trône de son royaume, qu'il se copie un double de cette Loi-ci d'après l'exemplaire conservé par les Prêtres, les Lévites.

19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:

Et qu'il l'ait avec lui, et y lise tout le temps de sa vie, dans le but d'apprendre à craindre l'Éternel, son Dieu, à garder,

20 That his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.

pour les pratiquer, toutes les paroles de cette Loi et ces statuts, afin que son cœur ne s'élève pas au-dessus de ses frères, et qu'il ne dévie du commandement ni à droite ni à gauche, afin que les jours de lui et de ses fils se prolongent au sein d'Israël.
