1 Samuel 17
1 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and encamped between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.
Et les Philistins rassemblèrent leurs armées pour faire la guerre, et ils se réunirent à Socho qui appartient à Juda, et ils campèrent entre Socho et Azeka vers Ephès-Dammim.
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped by the valley of Elah, and they set the battle in array against the Philistines.
Saül et les hommes d'Israël se rassemblèrent et campèrent dans la Vallée des Térébinthes, et formèrent leur ordre de bataille contre les Philistins.
3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
Or les Philistins s'appuyaient à une montagne d'un côté, et les Israélites s'appuyaient à une montagne de l'autre côté, et la vallée les séparait.
4 And there went out a champion from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
Alors le champion duelliste sortit des rangs des Philistins; il se nommait Goliath, était de Gath et avait une taille de cinq coudées et un empan.
5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.
Sa tête était couverte d'un casque d'airain et il portait une cotte de mailles, et cette cuirasse pesait cinq mille sicles d'airain.
6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a gorget of brass between his shoulders.
Et il avait aux pieds des bottes d'airain, et une pique d'airain entre ses épaules.
7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
Et la hampe de sa lance était comme l'ensouple du tisserand, et la pointe de sa lance pesait six cent sicles de fer, et le porte-bouclier le précédait.
8 And he stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, Why have ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose for yourselves a man for you, and let him come down to me.
Et s'arrêtant il adressa aux lignes d'Israël ces paroles? Pourquoi faites-vous une sortie pour vous ranger en bataille? Ne suis-je pas le Philistin, et vous les esclaves de Saül? Choisissez un homme qui descende contre moi!
9 If he shall be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I shall prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
S'il est de force à lutter avec moi et qu'il me batte, nous vous serons asservis; mais si j'ai le dessus et que je le batte, vous serez nos esclaves, et vous nous serez asservis.
10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
Et le Philistin dit: Aujourd'hui j'ai jeté un défi aux rangs d'Israël! Donnez-moi un homme pour que nous nous mesurions ensemble.
11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
Et Saül et tous les Israélites entendirent ces discours du Philistin, et ils furent effrayés et saisis d'une grande peur.
12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
Or David était le fils de cet Ephratite de Bethléem de Juda, nommé Isaï qui avait huit fils; et cet homme au temps de Saül était vieux, avancé en âge.
13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
Et les trois fils aînés d'Isaï avaient suivi Saül à la guerre; or les noms de ses trois fils qui marchaient comme soldats, étaient: Eliab, le premier-né, et Abinadab, son puîné, et Samma le troisième,
14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.
et David était le cadet. Et lorsque les trois aînés eurent suivi Saül,
15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
David allait et revenait de chez Saül pour garder les troupeaux de son père à Bethléem.
16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
Cependant le Philistin s'avançait matin et soir, et il se présenta durant quarante jours.
17 And Jesse said to David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this roasted grain, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;
Et Isaï dit à David: Prends donc pour tes frères cet épha de grain rôti et ces dix pains, et cours les porter à tes frères au camp.
18 And carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
Et ces dix tranches de caillé porte-les aux chefs de mille, et visite tes frères pour voir comment ils se trouvent, et t'informer de leurs désirs;
19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
or Saül et eux et tous les Israélites sont dans la vallée des Térébinthes en guerre avec les Philistins.
20 And David rose early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.
Alors David se leva le matin, et laissant les troupeaux à un gardien, il prit son fardeau et partit comme Isaï le lui avait commandé, et il arriva à la circonvallation, et l'armée qui se formait en ligne poussait le cri de guerre.
21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
Et les Israélites et les Philistins se rangèrent ligne contre ligne de bataille.
22 And David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran into the army, and came and greeted his brethren.
Et David laissa les valises qu'il portait aux soins du garde des bagages et courut à la ligne de bataille, et en arrivant il demanda à ses frères comment ils se trouvaient.
23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, from the armies of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words: and David heard them.
Et comme il parlait avec eux, voilà que le duelliste, le Philistin de Gath, nommé Goliath, sortit des rangs des Philistins et tint les mêmes discours, et David les entendit.
24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were exceedingly afraid.
Et à la vue de cet homme tous les Israélites s'enfuirent devant lui, et eurent une grande peur.
25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that hath come up? surely to defy Israel hath he come: and it shall be, that the man who shall kill him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.
Et les Israélites disaient: Avez-vous vu cet homme qui s'avance? C'est pour jeter à Israël un défi qu'il s'avance. Et celui qui le vaincra, le Roi l'enrichira d'une grande opulence et il lui donnera sa fille et il affranchira la maison de son père en Israël.
26 And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
Et David s'adressant aux hommes qui l'accompagnaient, dit: Qu'est-ce qui sera fait à celui qui vaincra ce Philistin-là et préservera Israël de l'opprobre? En effet qui est ce Philistin, cet incirconcis, pour jeter un défi aux bataillons du Dieu Vivant?
27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
Et le peuple lui tint le même langage et dit: Ainsi sera-t-il fait à l'homme qui le vaincra.
28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down here? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thy heart; for thou art come down that thou mayest see the battle.
Et Eliab, son frère aîné, entendit son entretien avec ces hommes, et Eliab fut enflammé de colère contre David et dit: Pourquoi donc es-tu descendu ici, et à qui tu laissé ce peu de brebis dans le désert? Je connais ta présomption et la malice de ton cœur; car c'est pour voir la bataille que tu es descendu.
29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?
Et David dit: Qu'ai-je donc fait? Ce n'est qu'une parole.
30 And he turned from him toward another, and spoke after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
Et David se détourna de lui et s'adressant à un autre il parla dans les mêmes termes et le peuple lui fit la première réponse.
31 And when the words were heard which David spoke, they reported them before Saul: and he sent for him.
Et les paroles prononcées par David furent entendues, puis rapportées devant Saül qui le fit chercher.
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
Et David dit à Saül: Que le cœur ne défaille à personne à cause de lui! Ton serviteur ira et se mesurera avec ce Philistin-là.
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
Et Saül dit à David: Tu ne saurais affronter ce Philistin pour te mesurer avec lui, car tu es un enfant, et lui, il est homme de guerre dès sa jeunesse.
34 And David said to Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
Et David dit à Saül: Ton serviteur faisait paître les brebis de son père, lorsque survinrent le lion et l'ours qui enleva une pièce du troupeau.
35 And I went after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
Et je me mis à sa poursuite et lui portai un coup et la lui arrachai de la gueule; et comme il se dressa contre moi, je le saisis par sa barbe et lui portai un coup et le tuai.
36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
Ainsi ton serviteur a abattu le lion et l'ours, et le Philistin, cet incirconcis, aura le sort de l'un ou de l'autre, car il jette un défi aux bataillons du Dieu Vivant.
37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
Et David dit: L'Éternel qui m'a sauvé de la griffe du lion et de la griffe de l'ours, Lui-même me sauvera aussi de la main de ce Philistin-là. Et Saül dit à David: Va, et que l'Éternel soit avec toi!
38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.
Et Saül revêtit David de ses propres habits et lui mit sur la tête un casque d'airain, et lui endossa la cuirasse.
39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he tried to go; for he had not proved it. And David said to Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off from him.
Et David ceignit son épée pardessus ses habits, et il se mit à marcher, car il n'avait pas encore essayé. Alors David dit à Saül: Je ne saurais marcher avec cet équipement, car je ne l'ai pas encore essayé. Et David s'en débarrassa
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a bag; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
et il prit dans sa main sa houlette et se choisit cinq cailloux polis dans la rivière et les mit dans sa gibecière de berger qui lui servait de valise, et, sa fronde à la main, il s'avança contre le Philistin.
41 And the Philistine advanced and drew near to David; and the man that bore the shield went before him.
Cependant le Philistin se rapprochait toujours plus près de David, précédé de l'homme qui portait son bouclier.
42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
Et le Philistin ayant regardé et ayant vu David, il le méprisa; car c'était un adolescent (or il était blond, avec une belle figure).
43 And the Philistine said to David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staffs? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
Et le Philistin dit à David: Suis-je un chien, que tu te présentes à moi avec des bâtons? Et le Philistin maudit David par le nom de son dieu.
44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh to the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
Et le Philistin dit à David: Viens à moi pour que je livre ta chair aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre.
45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
Et David dit au Philistin: Tu viens à moi avec épée, lance et javelot, mais moi, je viens à toi avec le Nom de l'Éternel des armées, Dieu des lignes d'Israël, que tu as défié.
46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thy head from thee; and I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
Aujourd'hui l'Éternel te livrera à mes mains, et je te terrasserai et te couperai la tête, et aujourd'hui je livrerai les cadavres de l'armée des Philistins aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre, et toute la terre comprendra qu'Israël a un Dieu,
47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.
et toute cette assemblée comprendra que ce n'est pas par l'épée et le dard que l'Éternel sauve; car c'est ici la querelle de l'Éternel et Il vous livre à nos mains.
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew near to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
Et quand le Philistin se leva et se mit en marche et s'avança contre David, David se hâta et courut devant la ligne à la rencontre du Philistin.
49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took from there a stone, and slung it with his sling, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
Et portant sa main à sa gibecière il en tira une pierre qu'il lança avec la fronde, et il atteignit le Philistin au front et la pierre s'enfonça dans son front, et il tomba le visage contre terre.
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
Ainsi David avec une fronde et une pierre l'emporta sur le Philistin, à qui il porta ses coups et ôta la vie, sans avoir d'épée à la main,
51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
et David accourut et se plaçant près du Philistin, il se saisit de son épée et la tira du fourreau et le tua, et lui trancha la tête. Et les Philistins voyant leur héros mort, prirent la fuite.
52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, to the entrance of the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron.
Et les hommes d'Israël et Juda s'ébranlèrent et poussèrent un cri, et poursuivirent les Philistins jusqu'à l'ouverture de la vallée et jusqu'aux portes d'Ecron, et les Philistins frappés à mort, tombèrent dans le chemin de Saharaïm, et jusques à Gath et jusqu'à Ecron.
53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their tents.
Et les enfants d'Israël revenus après la chasse aux Philistins pillèrent leur camp.
54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
Et David prit la tête du Philistin et la porta à Jérusalem, quant à son armure il la déposa dans sa tente.
55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
Or lorsque Saül vit David s'avancer à la rencontre du Philistin, il dit à Abner, général de l'armée: De qui donc ce jeune homme est-il fils, Abner? Et Abner dit: Par ta vie, ô Roi je l'ignore.
56 And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.
Et le Roi dit: Eh bien! informe-toi de qui cet adolescent est fils.
57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
Et lorsque David revint après avoir abattu le Philistin, Abner le prit et vint le présenter à Saül, tenant la tête du Philistin à la main.
58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.
Et Saül lui dit: De qui es-tu le fils, jeune homme? Et David dit: Le fils de ton serviteur, Isaï de Bethléhem.
