1 Kings 20
1 And Benhadad the king of Syria gathered all his army together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.
১অরামের রাজা বিনহদদ তাঁর সমস্ত সৈন্য জড়ো করলেন। তিনি বত্রিশজন রাজা ও অনেক ঘোড়া আর রথ সঙ্গে নিয়ে শমরিয়া আক্রমণ করবার জন্য ঘেরাও করলেন এবং যুদ্ধ করলেন।
2 And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said to him, Thus saith Benhadad,
২তিনি কয়েকজন লোককে শহরে পাঠিয়ে ইস্রায়েলের রাজা আহাবকে এই কথা জানালেন, “বিনহদদ বলছেন,
3 Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the most comely, are mine.
৩‘তোমার সোনা ও তোমার রূপা আমার, আর তোমার স্ত্রী ও ছেলে মেয়েদের মধ্যে যারা ভালো, তারা আমার’।”
4 And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
৪উত্তরে ইস্রায়েলের রাজা বললেন, “হে আমার প্রভু মহারাজ, আপনার কথা ঠিক। আমি এবং আমার সব কিছুই আপনার।”
5 And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Benhadad, saying, Although I have sent to thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver to me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;
৫পরে দূতেরা আহাবের কাছে আবার এসে বলল, “বিনহদদ বলছেন, ‘তোমার সোনা রূপা, স্ত্রীদের ও ছেলে মেয়েদের যে আমাকে দিতে হবে আমি লোক পাঠিয়ে বলে দিয়েছিলাম।
6 Yet I will send my servants to thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thy house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatever is pleasant in thy eyes, they shall take it in their hand, and carry it away.
৬কিন্তু আগামী কাল এই দিনের আমার দাসদেরকে আমি তোমার কাছে পাঠাব। তারা আপনার রাজবাড়ী ও আপনার কর্মচারীদের বাড়িতে খোঁজ করবে এবং যে সমস্ত জিনিস আপনার চোখে মূল্যবান তা সবই নিয়ে আসবে।’”
7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
৭তখন ইস্রায়েলের রাজা দেশের সমস্ত প্রাচীনদের ডেকে বললেন, “অনুরোধ করি, বিবেচনা করে দেখ, এই লোকটি শুধু ক্ষতি করবার চেষ্টা করছে, কারণ সে যখন আমার স্ত্রীদের ও ছেলে মেয়েদের এবং সোনা রূপার জন্য আদেশ পাঠালে আমি তা দিতে অস্বীকার করিনি।”
8 And all the elders and all the people said to him, Hearken not to him, nor consent.
৮সব প্রাচীনরা এবং সমস্ত লোকেরা তাঁকে বলল, “আপনি শুনবেন না কিম্বা রাজি হবেন না।”
9 Therefore he said to the messengers of Benhadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
৯তখন আহাব বিনহদদের দূতদেরকে বললেন, “আমার প্রভু মহারাজকে বলবে যে, তাঁর প্রথম দাবি অনুসারে আমি সবই করব, কিন্তু এই কাজ করতে পারব না।” পরে দূতেরা তখন সেই খবর নিয়ে বিনহদদের কাছে চলে গেল।
10 And Benhadad sent to him, and said, The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
১০তখন বিনহদদ আহাবের কাছে এই সংবাদ পাঠালেন, “আমার অনুসরণকারী সব লোককে এক এক মুঠো করে দেবার মত ধূলোও যদি শমরিয়াতে থেকে যায় তাহলে দেবতারা যেন আমাকে শাস্তি দেন আর তা ভীষণভাবেই দেন।”
11 And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his armour boast himself as he that putteth it off.
১১তাতে উত্তরে ইস্রায়েলের রাজা বললেন, “তাঁকে বলবে, ‘যে লোক যুদ্ধের সজ্জা পরে, সে সজ্জা খুলে রাখা লোকের মত গর্ব না করুক’।”
12 And it came to pass, when Benhadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said to his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.
১২বিনহদদের কাছে এই খবর গিয়ে যখন পৌঁছাল তখন তিনি ও অন্যান্য রাজারা তাঁদের তাঁবুতে পান করছিলেন। তিনি তাঁর লোকদের আদেশ দিলেন, “যুদ্ধের জন্য তোমরা তৈরী হও।” কাজেই তারা শহরটা আক্রমণ করবার জন্য তৈরী হল।
13 And, behold, there came a prophet to Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thy hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
১৩এর মধ্যে ইস্রায়েলের রাজা আহাবের কাছে একজন ভাববাদী এসে এই কথা ঘোষণা করলেন, “সদাপ্রভু বলছেন, ‘তুমি ঐ বিশাল সৈন্যবাহিনীকে দেখতে পাচ্ছ কি? আজই আমি ওদের তোমার হাতে তুলে দেব আর তখন তুমি জানতে পারবে যে, আমিই সদাপ্রভু’।”
14 And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
১৪আহাব বললেন, “কিন্তু কাকে দিয়ে তিনি তা করাবেন?” ভাববাদী উত্তরে বললেন, “সদাপ্রভু বলছেন যে, বিভিন্ন এলাকার শাসনকর্ত্তাদের অধীনে যে যুবক সৈন্যেরা আছে তারাই তা করবে।” আহাব জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “যুদ্ধটা শুরু করবে কে?” উত্তরে ভাববাদী বললেন, “আপনিই করবেন।”
15 Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty and two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
১৫আহাব এই কথা শুনে বিভিন্ন এলাকার শাসনকর্ত্তাদের অধীন যুবক সৈন্যদের জড়ো করলেন। তাতে তারা মোট দুশো বত্রিশজন হল। তারপর তিনি সব ইস্রায়েলীয় সৈন্যদের জড়ো করলে পর সাত হাজার সৈন্য হল।
16 And they went out at noon. But Benhadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.
১৬তারা দুপুর বেলায় বেরিয়ে পড়ল। বিনহদদ ও তাঁর সঙ্গে যুক্ত বত্রিশজন রাজা তাদের তাঁবুর মধ্যে পান করে মাতাল হয়েছিলেন।
17 And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Benhadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
১৭রাজ্যপালদের সেই যুবকরা বাইরে গেল; সেই দিন বিনহদদ খোঁজ নেবার জন্য লোক পাঠিয়ে দিলে তারা তাঁকে খবর দিল, “শমরিয়া থেকে লোকেরা এগিয়ে এসেছে।”
18 And he said, Whether they have come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they have come out for war, take them alive.
১৮তিনি বললেন, “তারা সন্ধির জন্য এসে থাকলে তাদের জীবন্ত ধরবে, আবার যুদ্ধের জন্য এসে থাকলেও তাদের জীবন্ত ধরবে।”
19 So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
১৯এর মধ্যে ওরা অর্থাৎ রাজ্যপালদের সেই যুবকরা ও তাদের পিছনে আসা সৈন্যদল শহর থেকে বের হল।
20 And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Benhadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.
২০তারা প্রত্যেকে তাদের নিজের নিজের বাধাদানকারীকে মেরে ফেলল। তা দেখে অরামীয়েরা পালিয়ে গেল আর ইস্রায়েলীয়েরা তাদের পিছনে তাড়া করল এবং অরামের রাজা বিনহদদ তাঁর কয়েকজন ঘোড়সওয়ারকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে ঘোড়ার পিঠে করে পালিয়ে গেলেন।
21 And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.
২১পরে ইস্রায়েলের রাজা বের হয়ে তাদের ঘোড়া ও রথ সব ধ্বংস করে দিলেন এবং প্রচুর অরামীয়দের হত্যা করলেন।
22 And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said to him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
২২পরে ঐ ভাববাদী ইস্রায়েলের রাজার কাছে এসে বললেন, “আপনার শক্তি বাড়ান এবং কি করতে হবে তা ভেবে দেখুন, কারণ আগামী বছর আসলে অরামের রাজা আপনাকে আবার আক্রমণ করবেন।”
23 And the servants of the king of Syria said to him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
২৩আর অরামের রাজার দাসেরা তাঁকে বলল, “ওদের দেবতাগুলো পাহাড়ের দেবতা, তাই আমাদের চেয়ে ওরা বেশী শক্তিশালী। কিন্তু আমরা যদি সমভূমিতে ওদের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করি তবে নিশ্চয়ই আমরা ওদের চেয়ে শক্তিশালী হব।
24 And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their places:
২৪আপনি এই কাজ করুন, রাজাদের সরিয়ে দিয়ে তাদের জায়গায় সেনাপতিদের নিযুক্ত করুন।
25 And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened to their voice, and did so.
২৫আর আপনার নিজের যত সৈন্য, যত ঘোড়া ও রথ নষ্ট হয়েছে, তত সৈন্য, তত ঘোড়া ও রথ সংগ্রহ করুন; তাহলে আমরা সমভূমিতে ইস্রায়েলের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করতে পারব। তখন নিশ্চয়ই আমরা তাদের চেয়ে শক্তিশালী হব।” তিনি তাদের কথায় রাজি হয়ে সেইমতই কাজ করলেন।
26 And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Benhadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
২৬পরের বছর আসলে বিনহদদ অরামীয়দেরকে জড়ো করে নিয়ে ইস্রায়েলের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করবার জন্য অফেকে গেলেন।
27 And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
২৭এদিকে ইস্রায়েলীয়দের জড়ো করা হল। তাদের খাবার জোগান দেবার ব্যবস্থা করা হলে পর তারাও অরামীয়দের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করবার জন্য বেরিয়ে গেল। ইস্রায়েলীয়েরা অরামীয়দের সামনের দিকে দুটি ছাগলের পালের মত ছাউনি ফেলল। কিন্তু অরামীয়েরা গোটা দেশটা জুড়ে থাকল।
28 And there came a man of God, and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thy hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
২৮তখন ঈশ্বরের একজন লোক এসে ইস্রায়েলের রাজাকে বললেন, “সদাপ্রভু এই কথা বলছেন, ‘অরামীয়েরা বলেছে, সদাপ্রভু পাহাড়ের ঈশ্বর, উপত্যকার ঈশ্বর নন; সেইজন্য আমি এই বিরাট সৈন্যদলকে তোমার হাতে তুলে দেব, আর এতে তোমরা জানতে পারবে যে, আমিই সদাপ্রভু’।”
29 And they encamped opposite one another seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.
২৯আর সাত দিন পর্যন্ত তারা একে অন্যের সামনাসামনি ছাউনি ফেলে থাকল, তারপর সপ্তম দিনের যুদ্ধ শুরু হয়ে গেল। ইস্রায়েলীয়েরা এক দিনের ই এক লক্ষ অরামীয় পদাতিক সৈন্য মেরে ফেলল।
30 But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Benhadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.
৩০বাদবাকী সৈন্যেরা অফেকে পালিয়ে গেল আর সেখানে তাদের সাতাশ হাজার সৈন্যের উপরে দেয়াল ধসে পড়ল। আর বিনহদদ সেখানে পালিয়ে গিয়ে বাড়ীর ভিতরের একটা কামরায় লুকিয়ে থাকলো।
31 And his servants said to him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: perhaps he will save thy life.
৩১পরে তাঁর দাসেরা তাঁকে বলল, “দেখুন, আমরা শুনেছি যে, ইস্রায়েলের রাজারা দয়ালু। চলুন, আমরা কোমরে চট পরে আর মাথায় দড়ি বেঁধে ইস্রায়েলের রাজার কাছে যাই। হয়তো তিনি আপনার প্রাণ রক্ষা করবেন।”
32 So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Benhadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
৩২পরে তাঁরা কোমরে চট পরে ও মাথায় দড়ি বেঁধে ইস্রায়েলের রাজার কাছে গিয়ে বললেন, “তোমার দাস বিনহদদ বলছেন যে, ‘অনুরোধ করি, আমার প্রাণ রক্ষা করুন’।” রাজা বললেন, “তিনি কি এখনও বেঁচে আছেন? তিনি আমার ভাই।”
33 Now the men diligently observed whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Benhadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Benhadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
৩৩সেই লোকেরা এটাকে ভাল লক্ষণ মনে করে তাড়াতাড়ি করে তাঁর কথা বুঝতে পেরে বলল, “হ্যাঁ, বিনহদদ নিশ্চয়ই আপনার ভাই।” রাজা বললেন, “আপনারা গিয়ে তাঁকে নিয়ে আসুন।” বিনহদদ বের হয়ে আসলে পর আহাব তাঁকে তাঁর রথে তুলে নিলেন।
34 And Benhadad said to him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
৩৪বিনহদদ বললেন, “তোমার বাবার কাছ থেকে আমার বাবা যে সব গ্রাম নিয়ে নিয়েছেন আমি সেগুলো আপনাকে ফিরিয়ে দেব। আমার বাবা যেমন শমরিয়াতে বাজার বসিয়েছিলেন তেমনি আপনিও দম্মেশকের বিভিন্ন জায়গায় বাজার বসাতে পারবেন।” আহাব বললেন, “একটা সন্ধি করে আপনাকে আমি ছেড়ে দেব।” এই বলে তিনি বিনহদদের সঙ্গে একটা সন্ধি করে তাঁকে ছেড়ে দিলেন।
35 And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.
৩৫সদাপ্রভুর আদেশে শিষ্য ভাববাদীদের মধ্যে একজন তাঁর সঙ্গীকে বললেন, “দয়া করে আমাকে আঘাত কর।” কিন্তু লোকটি আঘাত করতে রাজি হল না।
36 Then said he to him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou hast departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he had departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
৩৬তখন সেই ভাববাদী তাঁকে বললেন, “তুমি সদাপ্রভুর কথার বাধ্য হলে না বলে আমাকে ছেড়ে যাওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই একটা সিংহ তোমাকে মেরে ফেলবে।” লোকটি চলে যাওয়ার পরেই একটা সিংহ তাকে দেখতে পেয়ে মেরে ফেলল।
37 Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.
৩৭সেই ভাববাদী আর একজন লোককে দেখতে পেয়ে তাকে বললেন, “দয়া করে আমাকে আঘাত কর।” লোকটি তাঁকে আঘাত করে ক্ষত করল।
38 So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
৩৮তারপর সেই ভাববাদী রাস্তার পাশে গিয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে রাজার জন্য অপেক্ষা করতে লাগলেন। তিনি তাঁর মাথায় কাপড় বেঁধে তা চোখের উপরে নামিয়ে এনে নিজের পরিচয় গোপন করলেন।
39 And as the king passed by, he cried to the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man to me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he shall be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
৩৯রাজা ঐ পথে যাওয়ার দিন সেই ভাববাদী কেঁদে তাঁকে বললেন, “আপনার দাস আমি যুদ্ধের মাঝখানে গিয়েছিলাম। তখন একজন লোক একজন বন্দীকে আমার কাছে এনে বলল, ‘এই লোকটাকে পাহারা দিয়ে রাখ। যদি সে হারিয়ে যায় তবে তার প্রাণের বদলে তোমার প্রাণ নেওয়া হবে, আর তা না হলে ঊনচল্লিশ কেজি রূপা দিতে হবে।’
40 And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said to him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.
৪০কিন্তু আপনার দাস আমি এদিকে ওদিকে ব্যস্ত ছিলাম, এর মধ্যে সে কোথায় চলে গেছে।” তখন ইস্রায়েলের রাজা বললেন, “ঐ শাস্তিই তোমার হবে। তুমি নিজের মুখেই তা বলেছ।”
41 And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel knew that he was of the prophets.
৪১তখন সেই ভাববাদী তাড়াতাড়ি চোখের উপর থেকে মাথার কাপড়টা সরিয়ে ফেললেন আর ইস্রায়েলের রাজা তাঁকে ভাববাদীদের একজন বলে চিনতে পারলেন।
42 And he said to him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
৪২সেই ভাববাদী রাজাকে বললেন, “সদাপ্রভু এই কথা বলছেন, ‘আমি যে লোককে ধ্বংসের অভিশাপের অধীন করেছিলাম তুমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিয়েছ। কাজেই তার প্রাণের বদলে তোমার প্রাণ আর তার লোকদের বদলে তোমার লোকদের প্রাণ যাবে।’”
43 And the king of Israel went to his house sad and displeased, and came to Samaria.
৪৩এতে ইস্রায়েলের রাজা বিষন্ন ও বিরক্ত হয়ে তাঁর নিজের বাড়িতে চলে গেলেন ও পরে তিনি শমরিয়াতে পৌঁছালেন।
