1 Kings 18
1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself to Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.
১এর অনেক দিন পরে, বৃষ্টি না হওয়ার তৃতীয় বছরের দিন সদাপ্রভু থেকে এলিয়ের জন্য এই বাক্য এলো, “তুমি গিয়ে আহাবকে দেখা দাও। পরে আমি দেশে বৃষ্টি পাঠিয়ে দিচ্ছি।”
2 And Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. And there was a grievous famine in Samaria.
২তাতে এলিয় আহাবকে দেখা দিতে গেলেন। তখন শমরিয়াতে ভীষণ দূর্ভিক্ষ হয়েছিল।
3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:
৩আর আহাব রাজবাড়ির পরিচালক ওবদিয়কে ডাকলেন। ওবদিয় সদাপ্রভুকে খুব ভয় করতেন।
4 For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
৪ঈষেবল যখন সদাপ্রভুর ভাববাদীদের মেরে ফেলছিলেন তখন ওবদিয় একশোজন ভাববাদীকে নিয়ে পঞ্চাশ পঞ্চাশ করে দুটো গুহায় লুকিয়ে রেখেছিলেন। তিনি তাঁদের খাবার ও জলের জোগান দিতেন।
5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all brooks: perhaps we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.
৫আহাব ওবদিয়কে বললেন, “তুমি দেশের মধ্যে যেসব উনুই ও ছোট নদীগুলির কাছে যাও। ঘোড়া আর খচ্চরগুলোর প্রাণ রক্ষার জন্য হয়তো কিছু ঘাস পাওয়া যাবে। নাহলে সমস্ত পশু হারাতে হবে।”
6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
৬তাঁরা দুইজন ঘুরে দেখবার জন্য দেশটা ভাগ করে নিলেন। আহাব নিজে গেলেন এক দিকে আর ওবদিয় গেলেন অন্য দিকে।
7 And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?
৭ওবদিয় পথ দিয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন, এমন দিনের, দেখ, এলিয় তাঁর সামনে; ওবদিয় তাঁকে চিনতে পেরে মাটিতে উপুড় হয়ে পড়ে বললেন, “আমার প্রভু এলিয়?”
8 And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.
৮তিনি বললেন, “আমিই সেই; যাও, তোমার প্রভুকে গিয়ে জানাও যে, এলিয় এখানে আছেন।”
9 And he said, How have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?
৯তিনি বললেন, “আমি কি পাপ করেছি যে, আপনি আপনার দাস আমাকে মেরে ফেলবার জন্য আহাবের হাতে তুলে দিচ্ছেন?
10 As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation nor kingdom, where my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.
১০আপনার ঈশ্বর জীবন্ত সদাপ্রভুর দিব্যি, এমন কোনো জাতি বা রাজ্য নেই যার কাছে আমার প্রভু আপনার খোঁজে লোক পাঠাননি। আর যখন তারা বলল, সেই লোকটি নেই; তখন তারা আপনাকে পায়নি বলে তিনি সেই সব রাজ্যের ও জাতির লোকদেরকেও শপথ করিয়েছেন।
11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.
১১এখন আপনি বলছেন, যাও, তোমার প্রভুকে বল, দেখুন, এলিয় এখানে আছেন।
12 And it shall come to pass, as soon as I have gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee where I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.
১২আর আমি আপনার কাছ থেকে চলে গেলেই সদাপ্রভুর আত্মা আমার অজানা কোনো জায়গায় আপনাকে নিয়ে যাবেন, তাতে আমি গিয়ে আহাবকে খবর দিলে যদি তিনি আপনাকে খুঁজে না পান, তবে আমাকে হত্যা করবেন; কিন্তু আপনার দাস আমি ছোটবেলা থেকে সদাপ্রভুকে ভয় করে আসছি।
13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD’S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
১৩ঈষেবল যখন সদাপ্রভুর ভাববাদীদের মেরে ফেলছিলেন, তখন আমি যা করেছিলাম, তা কি আমার প্রভু শোনেন নি? সদাপ্রভুর ভাববাদীদের একশো জনকে পঞ্চাশ পঞ্চাশ করে দুটো গুহায় লুকিয়ে রেখেছি এবং তাদের খাবার ও জলের জোগান দিয়েছি।
14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.
১৪আর এখন আপনি বলছেন, যাও, তোমার মালিক কে বল, দেখুন, এলিয় এখানে আছেন। তিনি তো আমাকে মেরে ফেলবেন।”
15 And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him to day.
১৫এলিয় বললেন, “আমি যাঁর সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে আছি, সেই বাহিনীগণের জীবন্ত সদাপ্রভুর দিব্যি, আমি আজ অবশ্য তাঁকে দেখা দেব।”
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
১৬তখন ওবদিয় আহাবের সঙ্গে দেখা করে কথাটা তাঁকে বললেন; তাতে আহাব এলিয়ের সঙ্গে দেখা করতে গেলেন।
17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?
১৭এলিয়কে দেখে আহাব বললেন, “হে ইস্রায়েলের কাঁটা, এ কি তুমি?”
18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.
১৮এলিয় বললেন, “আমি কাঁটা হইনি, কিন্তু আপনি ও আপনার বাবার বংশের লোকেরাই; কারণ আপনারা সদাপ্রভুর আদেশ ত্যাগ করে বালদেবতাদের পিছনে গিয়েছেন।
19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, who eat at Jezebel’s table.
১৯এখন লোক পাঠিয়ে ইস্রায়েলের সবাইকে কর্মিল পর্বতে আমার কাছে জড়ো করুন। ঈষেবলের টেবিলে বালদেবতার যে চারশো পঞ্চাশজন ভাববাদী এবং আশেরার চারশোজন ভাববাদী খাওয়া দাওয়া করে তাদের নিয়ে আসুন।”
20 So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to mount Carmel.
২০তাতে আহাব ইস্রায়েলের সব লোকদের কাছে খবর পাঠালেন এবং কর্মিল পর্বতে ঐ ভাববাদীদের জড়ো করলেন।
21 And Elijah came to all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD is God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
২১পরে এলিয় লোকদের সামনে গিয়ে বললেন, “আর কতদিন তোমরা দুই নৌকায় পা দিয়ে থাকবে? যদি সদাপ্রভুই ঈশ্বর হন তবে তাঁর অনুসরণ কর, আর যদি বালদেবতাই ঈশ্বর হন তবে তাঁর অনুসরণ কর।” কিন্তু লোকেরা কোনো উত্তর দিল না।
22 Then said Elijah to the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
২২তখন এলিয় তাদের বললেন, “সদাপ্রভুর ভাববাদীদের মধ্যে কেবল আমিই বাকি আছি, কিন্তু বালদেবতার ভাববাদী রয়েছে সাড়ে চারশো জন।
23 Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will prepare the other bull, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:
২৩আমাদের জন্য দুটো ষাঁড় দেওয়া হোক। ওরা নিজেদের জন্য একটা ষাঁড় বেছে নিয়ে কেটে টুকরো টুকরো করে কাঠের উপর রাখুক, কিন্তু তাতে আগুন না দিক। আমি অন্য ষাঁড়টা নিয়ে কেটে প্রস্তুত করে কাঠের উপরে রাখব, কিন্তু তাতে আগুন দেব না।
24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
২৪তারপর ওরা ওদের দেবতাকে ডাকবে আর আমি ডাকব সদাপ্রভুকে। যিনি আগুন পাঠিয়ে এর উত্তর দেবেন তিনিই ঈশ্বর।” এই কথা শুনে সবাই বলল, “এ ভালো কথা।”
25 And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose one bull for yourselves, and prepare it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.
২৫এলিয় বাল দেবতার ভাববাদীদের বললেন, “তোমরা তো অনেকে আছ, আগে তোমরাই নিজেদের জন্য একটা ষাঁড় বেছে নিয়ে তৈরী কর এবং তোমরা নিজেদের দেবতাকে ডাক, কিন্তু আগুন দেবে না।”
26 And they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.
২৬যে ষাঁড়টা তাদের দেওয়া হল তা নিয়ে তারা তৈরী করে নিল। তারপর তারা সকাল থেকে দুপুর পর্যন্ত বাল দেবতাকে এই বলে ডাকতে লাগল, “হে বালদেব, আমাদের উত্তর দাও।” কিন্তু কোনো সাড়া মিলল না, কেউ উত্তর দিল না। যে বেদী তারা তৈরী করেছিল তার চারপাশে তারা নাচতে লাগল।
27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleepeth, and must be awakened.
২৭দুপুর বেলা এলিয় তাদের ঠাট্টা করে বললেন, “জোরে চিৎকার কর, সে তো দেবতা। হয়তো সে গভীর চিন্তা করছে, বা কোথাও গিয়েছে, বা পথে চলেছে। কিংবা হয়তো সে ঘুমাচ্ছে, তাকে জাগাতে হবে।”
28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.
২৮তখন তারা আরও জোরে চিৎকার করতে লাগল এবং তাদের ব্যবহার অনুসারে দেহে রক্তের ধারা বয়ে না যাওয়া পর্যন্ত ছোরা ও কাঁটা দিয়ে নিজেদের আঘাত করতে থাকল।
29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
২৯দুপুর গড়িয়ে গেল আর তারা বিকাল বেলার বলিদানের দিন পর্যন্ত ভাববাণী প্রচার করল, কিন্তু কোনো সাড়া পাওয়া গেল না, কেউ উত্তর দিল না, কেউ মনোযোগও দিল না।
30 And Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.
৩০তখন এলিয় সমস্ত লোকদের বললেন, “আমার কাছে এস।” তারা তাঁর কাছে গেল। এলিয় সদাপ্রভুর ভেঙে পড়া বেদী মেরামত করে নিলেন।
31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:
৩১এলিয় যাকোবের ছেলেদের প্রত্যেক গোষ্ঠীর জন্য একটা করে বারোটা পাথর নিলেন। এই যাকোবের কাছেই সদাপ্রভুর বাক্য এসেছিল, বলেছিলেন, “তোমার নাম হবে ইস্রায়েল।”
32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.
৩২সেই পাথরগুলো দিয়ে এলিয় সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশ্যে একটা বেদী তৈরী করলেন এবং তার চারপাশে এমন নালা খুঁড়লেন যার মধ্যে দুই কাঠা বীজ ধরতে পারে।
33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
৩৩পরে তিনি কাঠ সাজিয়ে ষাঁড়টা টুকরা টুকরা করে কাঠের উপর রাখলেন আর বললেন, “চারটা কলসী জলে ভরে এই হোমবলির ও কাঠের উপরে ঢেলে দাও।”
34 And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.
৩৪তারপর তিনি বললেন, “দ্বিতীয়বার ওটা কর।” এবং তারা দ্বিতীয়বার তাই করল। তিনি আদেশ দিলেন, “তৃতীয় বার কর।” তারা তৃতীয় বার তাই করল।
35 And the water ran around the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.
৩৫তখন বেদির চারদিকে জল গেল এবং নালা জলে ভরতি হয়ে গেল।
36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
৩৬পরে বিকালের বলিদানের দিন হলে পর ভাববাদী এলিয় কাছে এগিয়ে আসলেন এবং বললেন, “হে সদাপ্রভু, অব্রাহাম, ইস্হাক ও ইস্রায়েলের ঈশ্বর, আজকে তুমি জানিয়ে দাও যে, ইস্রায়েলের মধ্যে তুমিই ঈশ্বর এবং আমি তোমার দাস, আর তোমার আদেশেই আমি এই সব করেছি।
37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
৩৭শোনো সদাপ্রভু শোনো, যাতে এই সব লোকেরা জানতে পারে যে, হে সদাপ্রভু, তুমিই ঈশ্বর আর তুমিই তাদের মন ফিরিয়ে এনেছ।”
38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
৩৮তখন উপর থেকে সদাপ্রভুর আগুন পড়ে হোমবলি, কাঠ, পাথর ও ধূলো গ্রাস করল এবং নালার জলও শুষে নিল।
39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.
৩৯তা দেখে লোকেরা সবাই মাটিতে উপুড় হয়ে পড়ে বলল, “সদাপ্রভুই ঈশ্বর, সদাপ্রভুই ঈশ্বর।”
40 And Elijah said to them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
৪০তখন এলিয় তাদেরকে বললেন, “বাল দেবতার ভাববাদীদের ধর। তাদের একজনকেও পালিয়ে যেতে দিয়ো না।” তখন লোকেরা তাদের ধরে ফেলল। এলিয় তাদেরকে ছোট কীশোন নদীতে নিয়ে গেলেন এবং সেখানে তাদের মেরে ফেললেন।
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.
৪১তারপর এলিয় আহাবকে বললেন, “আপনি উঠে গিয়ে খাওয়া দাওয়া করুন, কারণ ভীষণ বৃষ্টির শব্দ শোনা যাচ্ছে।”
42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,
৪২এতে আহাব খাওয়া দাওয়া করতে গেলেন। আর এলিয় গিয়ে কর্মিলের চূড়ায় উঠলেন। তিনি মাটিতে নিচু হয়ে দুই হাঁটুর মধ্যে মুখ রাখলেন।
43 And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.
৪৩পরে তিনি তাঁর চাকরকে বললেন, “তুমি গিয়ে সাগরের দিকে চেয়ে দেখ।” সে গিয়ে দেখে বলল, “ওখানে কিছু নেই।” এলিয় বললেন, “সাতবার যাও।”
44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say to Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and go down, that the rain may not hinder thee.
৪৪সপ্তম বারে চাকরটি এসে বলল, “মানুষের হাতের মত ছোট একটা মেঘ সমুদ্র থেকে উঠছে।” তখন এলিয় তাকে বললেন, “উঠে গিয়ে আহাবকে বল যেন তিনি তাঁর রথ ঠিক করে নিয়ে নেমে যান, যেন প্রচন্ড বৃষ্টি আপনাকে যেতে বাধা না দেয়।”
45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
৪৫অমনি আকাশ মেঘে ও বাতাসে অন্ধকার হয়ে উঠল এবং ভীষণ বৃষ্টি এসে গেল। আহাব রথে করে যিষ্রিয়েলে গেলেন।
46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
৪৬আর সদাপ্রভুর হাত এলিয়ের উপর ছিল। তিনি তাঁর কাপড়খানা কোমর বাঁধনিতে গুঁজে নিয়ে আহাবের আগে আগে দৌড়ে যিষ্রিয়েলের প্রবেশ স্থানে গেলেন।
