Exodus 9
1 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and tell him, 'Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, says this: “Let my people go so that they may worship me.”
Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen: Ingredere ad Pharaonem, et loquere ad eum: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Hebræorum: Dimitte populum meum ut sacrificet mihi.
2 But if you refuse to let them go, if you still keep them back,
Quod si adhuc renuis, et retines eos:
3 then Yahweh's hand will be on your cattle in the fields and on the horses, donkeys, camels, herds, and flocks, and it will cause a terrible disease.
ecce manus mea erit super agros tuos: et super equos, et asinos, et camelos, et boves, et oves, pestis valde gravis.
4 Yahweh will treat Israel's cattle and Egypt's cattle differently and no animal that belongs to the Israelites will die.
Et faciet Dominus mirabile inter possessiones Israel, et possessiones Ægyptiorum, ut nihil omnino pereat ex eis quæ pertinent ad filios Israel.
5 Yahweh has fixed a time; he has said, “It is tomorrow that I will do this thing in the land.”'”
Constituitque Dominus tempus, dicens: Cras faciet Dominus verbum istud in terra.
6 Yahweh did this the next day: All the cattle of Egypt died, but none of the Israelites' animals died, not one animal.
Fecit ergo Dominus verbum hoc altera die: mortuaque sunt omnia animantia Ægyptiorum: de animalibus vero filiorum Israel nihil omnino periit.
7 Pharaoh investigated, and, behold, not even one animal of the Israelites died. But his heart was stubborn, so he did not let the people go.
Et misit Pharao ad videndum: nec erat quidquam mortuum de his quæ possidebat Israel. Ingravatumque est cor Pharaonis, et non dimisit populum.
8 Then Yahweh said to Moses and to Aaron, “Take some handfuls of ashes from a kiln. You, Moses, must throw the ashes up into the air while Pharaoh is watching.
Et dixit Dominus ad Moysen, et Aaron: Tollite plenas manus cineris de camino, et spargat illum Moyses in cælum coram Pharaone.
9 They will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt. They will cause blisters and sores to break out on people and animals throughout all the land of Egypt.”
Sitque pulvis super omnem Terram Ægypti: erunt enim in hominibus, et iumentis ulcera, et vesicæ turgentes in universa terra Ægypti.
10 So Moses and Aaron took ashes from a kiln and stood in front of Pharaoh. Then Moses threw the ashes up into the air. The ashes caused blisters and sores to break out on people and animals.
Tuleruntque cinerem de camino, et steterunt coram Pharaone, et sparsit illum Moyses in cælum: factaque sunt ulcera vesicarum turgentium in hominibus, et iumentis:
11 The magicians could not resist Moses because of the blisters, because the blisters were on them and on all the other Egyptians.
nec poterant malefici stare coram Moyse propter ulcera quæ in illis erant, et in omni Terra Ægypti:
12 Yahweh hardened Pharaoh's heart, so Pharaoh did not listen to Moses and Aaron. This was just as Yahweh had said to Moses that Pharaoh would do.
Induravitque Dominus cor Pharaonis, et non audivit eos, sicut locutus est Dominus ad Moysen.
13 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning, stand in front of Pharaoh, and say to him, 'Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, says this: “Let my people go so that they may worship me.
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen: Mane consurge, et sta coram Pharaone, et dices ad eum: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Hebræorum: Dimitte populum meum ut sacrificet mihi.
14 For this time I will send all my plagues on you yourself, on your servants and your people. I will do this so that you may know that there is no one like me in all the earth.
Quia in hac vice mittam omnes plagas meas super cor tuum, et super servos tuos, et super populum tuum: ut scias quod non sit similis mei in omni terra.
15 By now I could have reached out with my hand and attacked you and your people with disease, and you would have been eradicated from the land.
Nunc enim extendens manum percutiam te, et populum tuum peste, peribisque de terra.
16 But it was for this reason I allowed you to survive: In order to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed throughout all the earth.
Idcirco autem posui te, ut ostendam in te fortitudinem meam, et narretur nomen meum in omni terra.
17 You are still lifting yourself up against my people by not letting them go.
Adhuc retines populum meum: et non vis dimittere eum?
18 Listen! Tomorrow about this time I will bring a very strong hail storm, such as has not been seen in Egypt since the day it was begun until now.
En pluam cras hac ipsa hora grandinem multam nimis, qualis non fuit in Ægypto a die qua fundata est, usque in præsens tempus.
19 Now then, send men and gather your cattle and everything you have in the fields to a safe place. Every man and animal that is in the field and is not brought home—the hail will come down on them, and they will die.”'”
Mitte ergo iam nunc, et congrega iumenta tua, et omnia quæ habes in agro: homines enim, et iumenta, et universa quæ inventa fuerint foris, nec congregata de agris, cecideritque super ea grando, morientur.
20 Then those of Pharaoh's servants who believed in Yahweh's message hurried to bring their slaves and cattle into the houses.
Qui timuit verbum Domini de servis Pharaonis, facit confugere servos suos, et iumenta in domos:
21 But those who did not take Yahweh's message seriously left their slaves and cattle in the fields.
qui autem neglexit sermonem Domini, dimisit servos suos, et iumenta in agris.
22 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Reach out with your hand toward the sky so that there will be hail in all the land of Egypt, on people, on animals, and on all the plants in the fields throughout the land of Egypt.”
Et dixit Dominus ad Moysen: Extende manum tuam in cælum, ut fiat grando in universa Terra Ægypti super homines, et super iumenta, et super omnem herbam agri in Terra Ægypti.
23 Moses reached out with his staff toward the sky, and Yahweh sent thunder, hail, and lightning to the ground. He also rained hail on the land of Egypt.
Extenditque Moyses virgam in cælum, et Dominus dedit tonitrua, et grandinem, ac discurrentia fulgura super terram: pluitque Dominus grandinem super Terram Ægypti.
24 So there were hail and lightning mixed with hail, very severe, such as had not been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.
Et grando et ignis mista pariter ferebantur: tantæque fuit magnitudinis, quanta ante numquam apparuit in universa Terra Ægypti ex quo gens illa condita est.
25 Throughout all the land of Egypt, the hail struck everything in the fields, both people and animals. It struck every plant in the fields and broke every tree.
Et percussit grando in omni Terra Ægypti cuncta quæ fuerunt in agris, ab homine usque ad iumentum: cunctamque herbam agri percussit grando, et omne lignum regionis confregit.
26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites lived, was there no hail.
Tantum in Terra Gessen, ubi erant filii Israel, grando non cecidit.
27 Then Pharaoh sent men to summon Moses and Aaron. He said to them, “I have sinned this time. Yahweh is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.
Misitque Pharao, et vocavit Moysen et Aaron, dicens ad eos: Peccavi etiam nunc: Dominus iustus: ego et populus meus, impii.
28 Pray to Yahweh, because the mighty thunderbolts and hail are too much. I will let you go, and you will stay here no longer.”
Orate Dominum ut desinant tonitrua Dei, et grando: ut dimittam vos, et nequaquam hic ultra maneatis.
29 Moses said to him, “As soon as I leave the city, I will spread my hands out to Yahweh. The thunder will stop, and there will not be any more hail. In this way you will know that the earth belongs to Yahweh.
Ait Moyses: Cum egressus fuero de urbe, extendam palmas meas ad Dominum, et cessabunt tonitrua, et grando non erit: ut scias quia Domini est terra:
30 But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet really honor Yahweh God.”
novi autem quod et tu, et servi tui necdum timeatis Dominum Deum.
31 Now the flax and the barley were ruined, for the barley was maturing in the ear, and the flax was in bloom.
Linum ergo, et hordeum læsum est, eo quod hordeum esset virens, et linum iam folliculos germinaret:
32 But the wheat and the spelt were not harmed because they were later crops.
triticum autem, et far non sunt læsa, quia serotina erant.
33 When Moses had left Pharaoh and the city, he spread out his hands to Yahweh; the thunder and hail stopped, and the rain came down no more.
Egressusque Moyses a Pharaone ex urbe, tetendit manus ad Dominum: et cessaverunt tonitrua et grando, nec ultra stillavit pluvia super terram.
34 When Pharaoh saw that the rain, hail, and thunder had ceased, he sinned again and hardened his heart, together with his servants.
Videns autem Pharao quod cessasset pluvia, et grando et tonitrua, auxit peccatum:
35 Pharaoh's heart was hardened, so he did not let the people of Israel go. This was the way that Yahweh had said to Moses that Pharaoh would act.
et ingravatum est cor eius, et servorum illius, et induratum nimis: nec dimisit filios Israel, sicut præceperat Dominus per manum Moysi.
