Luke 1
1 To his Excellency, Theophilus. Many attempts have been already made to draw up an account of those events which have reached their conclusion among us,
૧આરંભથી જેઓ નજરે જોનારા તથા વચનના સેવકો હતા, તેઓએ આપણને કહ્યું છે તે પ્રમાણે,
2 just as they were reported to us by those who from the beginning were eye-witnesses, and afterwards became bearers of the Message.
૨આપણામાં પૂરી થયેલી વાતોનું વર્ણન કરવાને ઘણાંએ સ્વીકાર્યું છે;
3 And, therefore, I also, since I have investigated all these events with great care from their very beginning, have resolved to write a connected history of them for you,
૩માટે, ઓ માનનીય થિયોફિલ, મેં પણ શરૂઆતથી સઘળી વાતોની ચોકસાઈ કરીને, તને વિગતવાર લખવાનું નક્કી કર્યું,
4 in order that you may be able to satisfy yourself of the accuracy of the story which you have heard from the lips of others.
૪કેમ કે જે વાતો તને શીખવવામાં આવી છે, તેઓની સત્યતા તું જાણે.
5 In the reign of Herod, King of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the Division called after Abijah. His wife, whose name was Elizabeth, was also a descendant of Aaron.
૫યહૂદિયાના રાજા હેરોદની કારકિર્દીમાં અબિયાના યાજક વર્ગમાંનો ઝખાર્યા નામે એક યાજક હતો; તેની પત્ની હારુનની દીકરીઓમાંની હતી, તેનું નામ એલિસાબેત હતું.
6 They were both righteous people, who lived blameless lives, guiding their steps by all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
૬તેઓ બન્ને ઈશ્વરની આગળ ન્યાયી હતાં, તથા પ્રભુની સર્વ આજ્ઞાઓ તથા વિધિઓ પ્રમાણે નિર્દોષ રીતે વર્તતાં હતાં.
7 But they had no child, Elizabeth being barren; and both of them were advanced in years.
૭તેઓ નિઃસંતાન હતાં કેમ કે એલિસાબેત જન્મ આપવાને અસમર્થ હતી. તેઓ બન્ને ઘણાં વૃદ્ધ હતાં.
8 One day, when Zechariah was officiating as priest before God, during the turn of his Division,
૮તે છતાં ઝખાર્યા પોતાના યાજક વર્ગના ક્રમ પ્રમાણે ઈશ્વરની આગળ યાજકનું કામ કરતો હતો,
9 it fell to him by lot, in accordance with the practice among the priests, to go into the Temple of the Lord and burn incense;
૯એટલામાં યાજકપદના રિવાજ પ્રમાણે પ્રભુના ભક્તિસ્થાનમાં જઈને અર્પણ કરવા માટે તેને પસંદ કરવામાં આવ્યો.
10 and, as it was the Hour of Incense, the people were all praying outside.
૧૦ધૂપ સળગાવતા સમયે લોકોની સભા બહાર પ્રાર્થના કરતી હતી.
11 And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right of the Altar of Incense.
૧૧તે સમય દરમિયાન યજ્ઞવેદીની જમણી બાજુમાં જ્યાં ધૂપ સળગાવવામાં આવતો હતો ત્યાં પ્રભુનો એક સ્વર્ગદૂત ઊભેલો તેના જોવામાં આવ્યો.
12 Zechariah was startled at the sight and was awe-struck.
૧૨સ્વર્ગદૂતને જોઈને ઝખાર્યા ગભરાઈ ગયો, અને તેને બીક લાગી.
13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, whom you shall call by the name John.
૧૩સ્વર્ગદૂતે તેને કહ્યું કે, ઝખાર્યા, બીશ નહિ; કેમ કે તારી પ્રાર્થના સાંભળવામાં આવી છે, તારી પત્ની એલિસાબેતને દીકરો થશે, તેનું નામ તું યોહાન પાડશે.
14 He shall be to you a joy and a delight; and many shall rejoice over his birth.
૧૪તને આનંદ પ્રાપ્ત થશે, ને તેના જન્મથી ઘણાં લોકો હરખાશે;
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord; he shall not drink any wine or strong drink, and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit from the very hour of his birth,
૧૫કેમ કે તે પ્રભુની દ્રષ્ટિમાં મહાન થશે, દ્રાક્ષાસવ કે કોઈ ઉન્મત્ત પીણું પીશે નહિ; અને માતાના પેટમાં હશે ત્યારથી જ પવિત્ર આત્માથી ભરપૂર થશે.
16 and shall reconcile many of the Israelites to the Lord their God.
૧૬તે ઇઝરાયલના ઘણાં વંશજોને તેઓના ઈશ્વર યહોવાહ તરફ ફેરવશે.
17 He shall go before him in the spirit and with the power of Elijah, ‘to reconcile fathers to their children’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, and so make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”
૧૭તે એલિયાના આત્માએ તથા પરાક્રમે ઈશ્વરની આગળ ચાલશે, એ માટે કે તે પિતાઓનાં મન બાળકો તરફ તથા ન માનનારાઓને ન્યાયીઓના જ્ઞાન પ્રમાણે ચાલવાને ફેરવે, તથા પ્રભુને માટે સિદ્ધ થયેલી પ્રજા તૈયાર કરે.
18 “How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.”
૧૮ઝખાર્યાએ સ્વર્ગદૂતને કહ્યું કે, ‘એ મને કેવી રીતે જણાય? કેમ કે હું અને મારી પત્ની ઘણાં વૃદ્ધ છીએ.’”
19 “I am Gabriel,” the angel answered, “who stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
૧૯સ્વર્ગદૂતે તેને ઉત્તર આપ્યો કે, ‘હું ઈશ્વરની સમક્ષતામાં રહેનાર ગાબ્રિયેલ છું; તારી સાથે વાત કરીને તને આ શુભ સંદેશ આપવાને મને મોકલવામાં આવ્યો છે.’”
20 And now you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when this takes place, because you did not believe what I said, though my words will be fulfilled in due course.”
૨૦એ વાત બનશે તે દિવસ સુધી તું બોલી શકશે નહિ, કેમ કે મારી વાતો જે ઠરાવેલા સમયે પૂર્ણ થશે તેં તેઓનો વિશ્વાસ કર્યો નહિ.
21 Meanwhile the people were watching for Zechariah, wondering at his remaining so long in the Temple.
૨૧લોકો ઝખાર્યાની રાહ જોઈ રહયા હતા, તેને ભક્તિસ્થાનમાં વાર લાગી, માટે લોકો આશ્ચર્ય પામ્યા.
22 When he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision there. But Zechariah kept making signs to them, and remained dumb.
૨૨તે બહાર આવ્યો ત્યારે તેઓની સાથે તે બોલી શક્યો નહિ; ત્યારે લોકો એવું સમજ્યા કે અંદર ભક્તિસ્થાનમાં તેને કંઈ દર્શન થયું હશે; તે તેઓને ઇશારો કરતો હતો, અને બોલી શક્યો નહિ.
23 And, as soon as his term of service was finished, he returned home.
૨૩તેના સેવા કરવાના દિવસો પૂરા થયા ત્યારે એમ થયું કે તે પોતાના ઘરે પાછો ગયો.
24 After this his wife, Elizabeth, expecting to become a mother, lived in seclusion for five months.
૨૪તે દિવસ પછી તેની પત્ની એલિસાબેતને ગર્ભ રહ્યો, તે પાંચ મહિના સુધી ગુપ્ત રહી, અને તેણે કહ્યું કે,
25 “This is what the Lord has done for me,” she said, “now that he has deigned to take away the reproach under which I have been living.”
૨૫‘માણસોમાં મારું મહેણું દૂર કરવા મારા પ્રભુએ પોતાની કૃપાદષ્ટિનાં સમયમાં મને સારા દિવસો આપ્યા છે.’”
26 Six months later the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
૨૬છઠ્ઠે મહિને ગાબ્રિયેલ સ્વર્ગદૂતને ગાલીલના નાસરેથ નામે એક શહેરમાં એક કુમારિકાની પાસે ઈશ્વર તરફથી મોકલવામાં આવ્યો હતો.
27 to a maiden there who was betrothed to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. Her name was Mary.
૨૭દાઉદના વંશના, યૂસફ નામે, એક પુરુષ સાથે તેની સગાઈ થઈ હતી; તેનું નામ મરિયમ હતું.
28 Gabriel came into her presence and said: “Hail, you who have been highly favoured! The Lord is with you.”
૨૮સ્વર્ગદૂતે તેની પાસે આવીને કહ્યું કે, ‘હે કૃપા પામેલી, સુખી રહે, પ્રભુ તારી સાથે છે!’
29 Mary was much disturbed at his words, and was wondering to herself what such a greeting could mean,
૨૯પણ એ વચન સાંભળીને તે ઘણી ગભરાઈ અને વિચાર કરવા લાગી કે, આ તે કઈ જાતની સલામ હશે!
30 when the angel spoke again: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.
૩૦સ્વર્ગદૂતે તેને કહ્યું કે, ‘હે મરિયમ, બીશ નહીં; કેમ કે તું ઈશ્વરથી કૃપા પામી છે.
31 And now, you shall be with child and give birth to a son, and you shall give him the name Jesus.
૩૧જો, તને ગર્ભ રહેશે, તને દીકરો થશે, અને તું તેમનું નામ ઈસુ પાડશે.
32 The child shall be great and shall be called ‘Son of the Most High,’ and the Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David,
૩૨તે મોટા થશે અને પરાત્પર ઈશ્વરના દીકરા કહેવાશે; અને ઈશ્વર પ્રભુ તેમને તેમના પિતા દાઉદનું રાજ્યાસન આપશે.
33 and he shall reign over the descendants of Jacob for ever; And to his kingdom there shall be no end.” (aiōn g165)
૩૩તે યાકૂબના વંશજો પર સર્વકાળ રાજ્ય કરશે, અને તેમના રાજ્યનો અંત આવશે નહિ.’” (aiōn g165)
34 “How can this be?” Mary asked the angel. “For I have no husband.”
૩૪મરિયમે સ્વર્ગદૂતને કહ્યું કે, ‘એ કેમ કરીને થશે? કેમ કે હું કુંવારી છું, અને હું કોઈ પુરુષ સાથે સંબંધમાં આવી નથી.’”
35 “The Holy Spirit shall descend upon you,” answered the angel, “and the Power of the Most High shall overshadow you; and therefore the child will be called ‘holy,’ and ‘Son of God.’
૩૫સ્વર્ગદૂતે તેને ઉત્તર આપ્યો કે, ‘પવિત્ર આત્મા તારા પર આવશે, અને પરાત્પર ઈશ્વરનું પરાક્રમ તારા પર આચ્છાદન કરશે; માટે જે તારાથી જન્મ લેશે તેને પવિત્ર ઈશ્વરનો દીકરો કહેવાશે.
36 And Elizabeth, your cousin, is herself also expecting a son in her old age; and it is now the sixth month with her, though she is called barren;
૩૬જો, તારી સગી એલિસાબેતે પણ તેની વૃદ્ધાવસ્થામાં દીકરાનો ગર્ભ ધર્યો છે; અને જે નિ: સંતાન કહેવાતી હતી, તેને આ છઠ્ઠો મહિનો જાય છે.
37 for no promise from God shall fail to be fulfilled.”
૩૭‘કેમ કે ઈશ્વર માટે કશું જ અશક્ય નથી!’
38 “I am the servant of the Lord,” exclaimed Mary; “let it be with me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.
૩૮મરિયમે સ્વર્ગદૂતને કહ્યું કે, ‘જો, હું પ્રભુની સેવિકા છું, તારા કહ્યાં પ્રમાણે મને થાઓ.’ ત્યારે સ્વર્ગદૂત તેની પાસેથી ગયો.
39 Soon after this Mary set out, and made her way quickly into the hill-country, to a town in Judah;
૩૯તે દિવસોમાં મરિયમ ઊઠીને પહાડી દેશમાં યહૂદિયાના એક શહેરમાં તરત જ ગઈ.
40 and there she went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth.
૪૦ઝખાર્યાને ઘરે જઈને એલિસાબેતને સલામ કહી.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child moved within her, and Elizabeth herself was filled with the Holy Spirit,
૪૧એલિસાબેતે મરિયમની સલામ સાંભળી ત્યારે બાળક તેના પેટમાં કૂદ્યું; અને એલિસાબેતે પવિત્ર આત્માથી ભરપૂર થઈને.
42 and cried aloud: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is your unborn child!
૪૨તથા ઊંચા સ્વરથી કહ્યું કે, ‘સ્ત્રીઓમાં તું આશીર્વાદિત છે, તારું બાળક પણ આશીર્વાદિત છે!’
43 But how have I this honour, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
૪૩એ કૃપા મને ક્યાંથી કે, મારા પ્રભુની મા મારી પાસે આવે?
44 For, as soon as your greeting reached my ears, the child moved within me with delight!
૪૪કેમ કે, જો, તારી સલામનો અવાજ મારે કાને પડતાં બાળક મારા પેટમાં આનંદથી કૂદ્યું.
45 Happy indeed is she who believed that the promise which she received from the Lord would be fulfilled.”
૪૫જેણે વિશ્વાસ કર્યો તે આશીર્વાદિત છે, કેમ કે પ્રભુ તરફથી જે વાતો તેને કહેવામાં આવી છે તેઓ પૂર્ણ થશે.
46 And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord,
૪૬મરિયમે કહ્યું કે, મારો જીવ પ્રભુને મહાન માને છે,
47 my spirit delights in God my Saviour;
૪૭અને ઈશ્વર, મારા ઉદ્ધારકમાં મારો આત્મા હરખાયો છે.
48 for he has remembered his servant in her lowliness; And from this hour all ages will count me happy!
૪૮કારણ કે તેમણે પોતાની સેવિકાની દીનાવસ્થા પર દ્ર્ષ્ટિ કરી છે; કેમ કે, જો, હવેથી સઘળી પેઢીઓ મને આશીર્વાદિત કહેશે.
49 Great things has the Almighty done for me; And holy is his name.
૪૯કેમ કે પરાક્રમી ઈશ્વરે મારે સારુ મહાન કૃત્યો કર્યા છે, તેમનું નામ પવિત્ર છે.
50 From age to age his mercy rests On those who reverence him.
૫૦જેઓ તેમનું સન્માન કરે છે, તેઓ પર તેમની દયા પેઢી દરપેઢી રહે છે.
51 Mighty are the deeds of his arm; He scatters the proud with their own devices,
૫૧તેમણે પોતાના પરાક્રમી હાથો વડે ઘણાં પરાક્રમી કાર્યો કર્યાં છે, અભિમાનીઓને તેઓનાં હૃદયની કલ્પનામાં તેમણે વિખેરી નાખ્યા છે.
52 he casts down princes from their thrones, and the lowly he uplifts,
૫૨તેમણે રાજકર્તાઓને રાજ્યાસન પરથી ઉતારી નાખ્યા છે, અને ગરીબોને ઊંચા કર્યા છે.
53 the hungry he loads with gifts, and the rich he sends empty away.
૫૩તેમણે ભૂખ્યાંઓને સારાં વાનાંથી તૃપ્ત કર્યા છે; અને શ્રીમંતોને ખાલી હાથે પાછા કાઢ્યાં છે.
54 He has stretched out his hand to his servant Israel, Ever mindful of his mercy
૫૪આપણા પૂર્વજોને તેમના કહ્યાં પ્રમાણે, ઇબ્રાહિમ પર તથા તેના વંશ પર
૫૫સદા દયા કરવાનું સંભારીને, તેમણે પોતાના સેવક ઇઝરાયલને સહાય કરી.’” (aiōn g165)
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned to her home.
૫૬મરિયમ આશરે ત્રણ મહિના સુધી તેની સાથે રહી, પછી પોતાને ઘરે પાછી ગઈ.
57 When Elizabeth’s time came, she gave birth to a son;
૫૭હવે એલિસાબેતના દિવસો પૂરા થયા, એટલે તેને દીકરો જનમ્યો.
58 and her neighbours and relations, hearing of the great goodness of the Lord to her, came to share her joy.
૫૮તેના પડોશીઓએ તથા સગાંઓએ સાંભળ્યું કે, પ્રભુએ તેના પર મોટી દયા કરી છે, ત્યારે તેઓએ તેની સાથે આનંદ કર્યો.
59 A week later they met to circumcise the child, and were about to call him ‘Zechariah’ after his father,
૫૯આઠમે દિવસે તેઓ છોકરાંની સુન્નત કરવા આવ્યાં, ત્યારે તેઓ તેના પિતાના નામ ઉપરથી તેનું નામ ઝખાર્યા પાડવા માંગતા હતા;
60 when his mother interposed: “No, he is to be called John.”
૬૦પણ તેની માએ તેઓને કહ્યું કે, ‘એમ નહિ, પણ તેનું નામ યોહાન પાડવું.’”
61 “You have no relation of that name!” they exclaimed;
૬૧તેઓએ તેને કહ્યું કે, ‘તારાં સગામાંના કોઈનું એવું નામ પાડેલું નથી.’”
62 and they made signs to the child’s father, to find out what he wished the child to be called.
૬૨તેઓએ ઇશારો કરીને તેના પિતાને પૂછ્યું કે, ‘તું તેનું શું નામ પાડવા ચાહે છે?’”
63 Asking for a writing-tablet, he wrote the words — ‘His name is John.’ Every one was surprised;
૬૩તેણે પથ્થરપાટી માગીને તેના પર લખ્યું કે, ‘તેનું નામ યોહાન છે.’”
64 and immediately Zechariah recovered his voice and the use of his tongue, and began to bless God.
૬૪તેથી તેઓ સર્વ અચંબો પામ્યા. તરત ઝખાર્યાનું મુખ ઊઘડી ગયું, ને તેની જીભ છૂટી થઈ, તે ઈશ્વરની સ્તુતિ કરતો બોલવા લાગ્યો.
65 All their neighbours were awe-struck at this; and throughout the hill-country of Judea the whole story was much talked about;
૬૫તેઓની આસપાસના સર્વ રહેવાસીઓને બીક લાગી, અને યહૂદિયાના આખા પહાડી દેશમાં એ વાતોની ચર્ચા ચાલી.
66 and all who heard it kept it in mind, asking one another — “What can this child be destined to become?” For the Power of the Lord was with him.
૬૬જેઓએ તે વાતો સાંભળી તે સર્વએ તે મનમાં રાખીને કહ્યું કે, ત્યારે આ છોકરો કેવો થશે? કેમ કે પ્રભુનો હાથ તેના પર હતો.
67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and, speaking under inspiration, said:
૬૭તેના પિતા ઝખાર્યાએ પવિત્ર આત્માથી ભરપૂર થઈને એવો પ્રબોધ કર્યો કે,
68 “Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, Who has visited his people and wrought their deliverance,
૬૮ઇઝરાયલના ઈશ્વર પ્રભુ સ્તુતિમાન થાઓ; કેમ કે તેમણે પોતાના લોકની મુલાકાત લઈને તેઓનો ઉદ્ધાર કર્યો છે.
69 and has raised up for us the Strength of our Salvation In the House of his servant David —
૬૯તેમણે પોતાના સેવક દાઉદના કુળમાં, આપણે સારુ એક પરાક્રમી ઉદ્ધારનાર આપ્યા છે,
૭૦( જગતના પહેલાથી ઈશ્વરે પવિત્ર પ્રબોધકોના મુખથી કહ્યું હતું તે પ્રમાણે, ), (aiōn g165)
71 Salvation from our enemies and from the hands of all that hate us,
૭૧એટલે તે આપણા શત્રુઓથી તથા આપણા પર દ્વેષ રાખનારા સર્વના હાથમાંથી આપણને બચાવે;
72 showing mercy to our forefathers, And mindful of his sacred Covenant.
૭૨એ સારુ કે તે આપણા પૂર્વજો પ્રત્યે દયા દર્શાવે, તથા પોતાનો પવિત્ર કરાર યાદ કરે,
73 This was the oath which he swore to our forefather Abraham —
૭૩એટલે તેમણે આપણા પિતા ઇબ્રાહિમની સાથે જે સમ ખાધા તે;
74 That we should be rescued from the hands of our enemies,
૭૪એ માટે કે તે આપણે સારુ એવું કરે કે, આપણે પોતાના શત્રુઓના હાથમાંથી છૂટકો પામીને, નિર્ભયતાથી આપણા આખા આયુષ્યભર તેમની આગળ
75 and should serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness, In his presence all our days.
૭૫પવિત્રાઈથી તથા ન્યાયીપણાથી તેમની સેવા કરીએ.
76 And thou, Child, shalt be called Prophet of the Most High, For thou shalt go before the Lord to make ready his way,
૭૬અને, ઓ પુત્ર, તું પરાત્પર ઈશ્વરનો પ્રબોધક કહેવાશે; કેમ કે તું પ્રભુની આગળ ચાલશે, એ માટે કે તું પ્રભુનો માર્ગ તૈયાર કરે,
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation In the forgiveness of their sins,
૭૭તથા તેમના લોકોને પાપની માફી મળવા માટે તેઓને ઉદ્ધારનું જ્ઞાન આપશે.
78 through the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the Dawn will break on us from Heaven,
૭૮અને આપણી માફી એ માટે થઈ કેમ કે આપણા ઈશ્વરની ઘણી દયા સ્વર્ગમાંથી ઉદ્ધારનાર ઊગતાં સૂર્ય સમાન આપણી પાસે આવે છે,
79 to give light to those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, And guide our feet into the way of peace.”
૭૯એ માટે કે અંધારામાં તથા મરણની છાયામાં જેઓ બેઠેલા છે તેઓને તે પ્રકાશ આપે તથા આપણા પગલાંને શાંતિના માર્ગમાં દોરી જાય.
80 The child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the Wilds till the time came for his appearance before Israel.
૮૦પુત્ર મોટો થયો, આત્મામાં બળવાન થતો ગયો, અને ઇઝરાયલમાં તેના જાહેર થવાનાં દિવસ સુધી તે અરણ્યમાં રહ્યો.
