Luke 1
1 To his Excellency, Theophilus. Many attempts have been already made to draw up an account of those events which have reached their conclusion among us,
Comme plusieurs ont entrepris de composer un récit des choses qui sont reçues parmi nous avec une entière assurance
2 just as they were reported to us by those who from the beginning were eye-witnesses, and afterwards became bearers of the Message.

3 And, therefore, I also, since I have investigated all these events with great care from their very beginning, have resolved to write a connected history of them for you,

4 in order that you may be able to satisfy yourself of the accuracy of the story which you have heard from the lips of others.

5 In the reign of Herod, King of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the Division called after Abijah. His wife, whose name was Elizabeth, was also a descendant of Aaron.
Il y eut du temps d'Hérode, roi de Judée, un certain prêtre, nommé Zacharie, appartenant à la classe d'Abia; et il avait une femme qui appartenait aux filles d'Aaron, et son nom était Élisabeth.
6 They were both righteous people, who lived blameless lives, guiding their steps by all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
Or ils étaient l'un et l'autre justes devant Dieu, observant d'une manière irréprochable tous les commandements et décrets du Seigneur.
7 But they had no child, Elizabeth being barren; and both of them were advanced in years.
Et ils n'avaient pas d'enfant, vu qu'Élisabeth était stérile, et ils étaient l'un et l'autre avancés en âge.
8 One day, when Zechariah was officiating as priest before God, during the turn of his Division,
Or, il advint, pendant qu'il remplissait, lors du tour de sa classe, sa charge de prêtre devant Dieu,
9 it fell to him by lot, in accordance with the practice among the priests, to go into the Temple of the Lord and burn incense;
que le sort l'appela, selon l'usage de la prêtrise, à offrir l'encens en entrant dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur;
10 and, as it was the Hour of Incense, the people were all praying outside.
et toute la multitude du peuple était en prière au dehors à l'heure de l'encens.
11 And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right of the Altar of Incense.
Or un ange du Seigneur, qui se tenait à droite de l'autel de l'encens, lui apparut,
12 Zechariah was startled at the sight and was awe-struck.
et Zacharie fut troublé en le voyant, et la crainte s'empara de lui.
13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, whom you shall call by the name John.
Mais l'ange lui dit: « Ne crains point, Zacharie, car ta prière a été entendue, et ta femme Élisabeth t'enfantera un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jean;
14 He shall be to you a joy and a delight; and many shall rejoice over his birth.
et il sera pour toi une cause de joie et d'allégresse, et plusieurs se réjouiront de sa naissance;
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord; he shall not drink any wine or strong drink, and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit from the very hour of his birth,
car il sera grand devant le Seigneur, et il ne boira absolument point de vin ni de cervoise, et il sera rempli de l'esprit saint pendant qu'il sera encore dans le ventre de sa mère;
16 and shall reconcile many of the Israelites to the Lord their God.
et il ramènera plusieurs des fils d'Israël au Seigneur leur Dieu;
17 He shall go before him in the spirit and with the power of Elijah, ‘to reconcile fathers to their children’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, and so make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”
et lui-même marchera devant Lui avec l'esprit et la puissance d'Élie, pour ramener vers les enfants les cœurs des pères, et les rebelles aux sentiments des justes, afin de préparer pour le Seigneur un peuple bien disposé. »
18 “How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.”
Et Zacharie dit à l'ange: « A quoi reconnaîtrai-je cela? Car je suis un vieillard, et ma femme est avancée en âge? »
19 “I am Gabriel,” the angel answered, “who stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
Et l'ange lui répliqua: « Je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu, et j'ai été envoyé pour te parler et t'annoncer cette bonne nouvelle.
20 And now you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when this takes place, because you did not believe what I said, though my words will be fulfilled in due course.”
Et voici, tu seras muet et sans pouvoir parler jusques au jour où cela se réalisera, parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s'accompliront en leur temps. »
21 Meanwhile the people were watching for Zechariah, wondering at his remaining so long in the Temple.
Et le peuple attendait Zacharie, et l'on s'étonnait de ce qu'il s'arrêtait dans le sanctuaire;
22 When he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision there. But Zechariah kept making signs to them, and remained dumb.
mais lorsqu'il fut sorti il ne pouvait leur parler, et ils comprirent qu'il avait eu une vision dans le sanctuaire; et lui-même leur faisait des signes, et il demeura muet.
23 And, as soon as his term of service was finished, he returned home.
Et il advint, lorsque le temps de son service fut terminé, qu'il retourna dans sa demeure.
24 After this his wife, Elizabeth, expecting to become a mother, lived in seclusion for five months.
Or après ce temps-là Élisabeth sa femme conçut, et elle se cacha durant cinq mois,
25 “This is what the Lord has done for me,” she said, “now that he has deigned to take away the reproach under which I have been living.”
« parce que, » disait-elle, « le Seigneur a ainsi agi envers moi au moment où Il a daigné effacer mon opprobre parmi les hommes. »
26 Six months later the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
Or, au sixième mois l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé de Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, nommée Nazareth,
27 to a maiden there who was betrothed to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. Her name was Mary.
auprès d'une vierge fiancée à un homme nommé Joseph, qui appartenait à la famille de David, et le nom de la vierge était Marie.
28 Gabriel came into her presence and said: “Hail, you who have been highly favoured! The Lord is with you.”
Et étant entré auprès d'elle, il lui dit: « Salut, toi qui es comblée de grâces, le Seigneur est avec toi! »
29 Mary was much disturbed at his words, and was wondering to herself what such a greeting could mean,
Mais elle fut troublée de cette parole, et elle réfléchissait sur ce que pouvait signifier une telle salutation.
30 when the angel spoke again: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.
Et l'ange lui dit: « Ne crains point, Marie; car tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu;
31 And now, you shall be with child and give birth to a son, and you shall give him the name Jesus.
et voici, tu concevras en ton sein et tu mettras au monde un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus.
32 The child shall be great and shall be called ‘Son of the Most High,’ and the Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David,
Il sera grand, et il sera appelé Fils du Très-Haut, et le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David son père,
33 and he shall reign over the descendants of Jacob for ever; And to his kingdom there shall be no end.” (aiōn g165)
et il régnera sur la maison de Jacob pour les siècles, et son règne n'aura point de fin. » (aiōn g165)
34 “How can this be?” Mary asked the angel. “For I have no husband.”
Mais Marie dit à l'ange: « Comment cela se fera-t-il, puisque je ne connais point d'homme? »
35 “The Holy Spirit shall descend upon you,” answered the angel, “and the Power of the Most High shall overshadow you; and therefore the child will be called ‘holy,’ and ‘Son of God.’
Et l'ange lui répliqua: « L'Esprit saint descendra sur toi, et une puissance du Très-Haut te couvrira; c'est pourquoi aussi l'être saint qui sera engendré sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
36 And Elizabeth, your cousin, is herself also expecting a son in her old age; and it is now the sixth month with her, though she is called barren;
Et voici, Élisabeth ta parente a, elle aussi, conçu un fils en sa vieillesse, et elle est maintenant dans son sixième mois, elle qui était appelée stérile;
37 for no promise from God shall fail to be fulfilled.”
car rien de ce qui vient de Dieu ne sera frappé d'impuissance. »
38 “I am the servant of the Lord,” exclaimed Mary; “let it be with me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.
Or Marie dit: « Voici la servante du Seigneur; qu'il me soit fait selon ta parole. » Et l'ange s'éloigna d'elle.
39 Soon after this Mary set out, and made her way quickly into the hill-country, to a town in Judah;
Or Marie s'étant mise en route en ces jours-là se rendit en toute hâte dans la montagne, dans une ville de Juda,
40 and there she went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth.
et elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie et salua Élisabeth.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child moved within her, and Elizabeth herself was filled with the Holy Spirit,
Et il advint, lorsque Élisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, que l'enfant bondit dans son sein, et Élisabeth fut remplie de l'Esprit saint,
42 and cried aloud: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is your unborn child!
et elle poussa un grand cri, et dit: « Tu es bénie entre les femmes, et le fruit de ton sein est béni!
43 But how have I this honour, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Et comment m'est-il accordé que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne à moi?
44 For, as soon as your greeting reached my ears, the child moved within me with delight!
Car voici, lorsque la voix de ta salutation est parvenue à mes oreilles, l'enfant a bondi d'allégresse dans mon sein.
45 Happy indeed is she who believed that the promise which she received from the Lord would be fulfilled.”
Et bienheureuse celle qui a cru à l'accomplissement de ce qui lui a été dit par le Seigneur! »
46 And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord,
Et Marie dit: « Mon âme exalte le Seigneur,
47 my spirit delights in God my Saviour;
et mon esprit s'est réjoui en Dieu mon sauveur,
48 for he has remembered his servant in her lowliness; And from this hour all ages will count me happy!
parce qu'il a jeté les yeux sur la bassesse de Sa servante. Car voici, dès maintenant toutes les générations m'appelleront bienheureuse,
49 Great things has the Almighty done for me; And holy is his name.
parce que le Tout-puissant a fait pour moi de grandes choses. Et Son nom est saint,
50 From age to age his mercy rests On those who reverence him.
et Sa miséricorde repose de générations en générations sur ceux qui Le craignent.
51 Mighty are the deeds of his arm; He scatters the proud with their own devices,
Il a exercé la force avec Son bras; Il a dispersé ceux qui s'enorgueillissaient dans les pensées de leur cœur;
52 he casts down princes from their thrones, and the lowly he uplifts,
Il a renversé du trône les potentats et Il a élevé les humbles;
53 the hungry he loads with gifts, and the rich he sends empty away.
Il a rassasié de biens les affamés, et Il a renvoyé les riches dénués de tout;
54 He has stretched out his hand to his servant Israel, Ever mindful of his mercy
Il s'est intéressé à Israël Son serviteur, et Il a eu souvenance de Sa miséricorde,
comme Il l'avait dit à nos pères, envers Abraham et sa postérité pour l'éternité. » (aiōn g165)
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned to her home.
Or Marie demeura avec elle environ trois mois, puis elle revint en sa maison.
57 When Elizabeth’s time came, she gave birth to a son;
Or, le moment où Élisabeth devait accoucher arriva, et elle mit au monde un fils.
58 and her neighbours and relations, hearing of the great goodness of the Lord to her, came to share her joy.
Et ses voisins et ses parents apprirent que le Seigneur avait fait éclater envers elle Sa miséricorde, et ils se réjouissaient avec elle.
59 A week later they met to circumcise the child, and were about to call him ‘Zechariah’ after his father,
Et il arriva qu'on vint au huitième jour circoncire l'enfant; et on lui donnait le nom de son père, Zacharie,
60 when his mother interposed: “No, he is to be called John.”
mais sa mère prenant la parole dit: « Non, mais il sera appelé Jean. »
61 “You have no relation of that name!” they exclaimed;
Et on lui dit: « Il n'est personne de ta parenté qui porte ce nom-là! »
62 and they made signs to the child’s father, to find out what he wished the child to be called.
Mais on demanda par signes à son père quel nom il voulait qu'on lui donnât.
63 Asking for a writing-tablet, he wrote the words — ‘His name is John.’ Every one was surprised;
Et ayant demandé des tablettes il écrivit ces mots: « Jean est son nom. » Et ils furent tous émerveillés.
64 and immediately Zechariah recovered his voice and the use of his tongue, and began to bless God.
Or sa bouche s'ouvrit aussitôt et sa langue se délia et il proférait les louanges de Dieu.
65 All their neighbours were awe-struck at this; and throughout the hill-country of Judea the whole story was much talked about;
Et la crainte s'empara de tous leurs voisins, et dans toute la montagne de Judée on se répétait tous ces récits,
66 and all who heard it kept it in mind, asking one another — “What can this child be destined to become?” For the Power of the Lord was with him.
et tous ceux qui les avaient entendus les serraient dans leur cœur, en disant: « Que sera donc ce petit enfant? » Et en effet la main du Seigneur était avec lui.
67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and, speaking under inspiration, said:
Et Zacharie son père fut rempli de l'Esprit saint, et prophétisa en ces termes:
68 “Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, Who has visited his people and wrought their deliverance,
« Béni soit le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, de ce qu'il a visité et racheté Son peuple;
69 and has raised up for us the Strength of our Salvation In the House of his servant David —
de ce qu'il nous a suscité une victorieuse délivrance dans la maison de David Son serviteur,
selon ce qu'il avait dit de tout temps par la bouche de Ses saints prophètes, (aiōn g165)
71 Salvation from our enemies and from the hands of all that hate us,
délivrance de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent;
72 showing mercy to our forefathers, And mindful of his sacred Covenant.
voulant faire miséricorde à nos pères et se souvenir de Sa sainte alliance,
73 This was the oath which he swore to our forefather Abraham —
du serment qu'il avait fait à Abraham notre père
74 That we should be rescued from the hands of our enemies,
de nous permettre, après avoir été délivrés de la main des ennemis, de Lui rendre un culte sans crainte,
75 and should serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness, In his presence all our days.
en suivant la piété et la justice devant Lui, durant toute notre vie.
76 And thou, Child, shalt be called Prophet of the Most High, For thou shalt go before the Lord to make ready his way,
Mais toi aussi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut, car tu marcheras devant le Seigneur pour préparer Ses voies,
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation In the forgiveness of their sins,
afin de donner à Son peuple la connaissance du salut par la rémission de leurs péchés,
78 through the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the Dawn will break on us from Heaven,
à cause des entrailles de miséricorde de notre Dieu, grâces auxquelles une aurore d'en haut nous visitera
79 to give light to those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, And guide our feet into the way of peace.”
pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et dans l'ombre de la mort, afin de diriger nos pieds dans le chemin de la paix. »
80 The child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the Wilds till the time came for his appearance before Israel.
Or le petit enfant grandissait et se fortifiait en esprit, et il se tenait dans les déserts jusques au jour de sa manifestation à Israël.
