Daniel 2
1 [One night] during the second year that Nebuchadnezzar ruled, he had a dream. The dream worried him very much; and [as a result] he could not sleep.
Im zweiten Jahre der Regierung Nebukadnezars aber hatte Nebukadnezar einmal Träume, so daß sein Geist in Unruhe versetzt wurde, und es um seinen Schlaf geschehen war.
2 [The next morning] he summoned his men who worked magic, fortune-tellers, those who worked sorcery, and those who studied the stars. [Because he had forgotten what he had dreamed, ] he insisted that they tell him what he had dreamed. As they stood there in front of the king,
Da befahl der König die Zauberer, Wahrsager, Beschwörer und Chaldäer zu berufen, damit sie dem Könige sagten, was er geträumt habe. Als sie nun erschienen und vor den König getreten waren,
3 he said, “I had a dream [last night] that worries me. [Tell me what I dreamed, because] I want to know what the dream [means].”
sprach der König zu ihnen: Ich hatte einen Traum, und mein Geist wurde in Unruhe versetzt vor Begierde, den Traum zu verstehen.
4 The men who studied the stars replied to the king, speaking in the Aramaic [language]. They said, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we hope that you will live a long time! Tell us what you dreamed, and [then] we will tell you what it means!”
Da antworteten die Chaldäer dem König aramäisch: O König, mögest du immerdar leben! Erzähle deinen Knechten den Traum, damit wir dir sagen, was er bedeutet!
5 But the king replied, “I have firmly decided that you must tell me the dream, and [also tell me] what it means. If you do not do that, I will [order my soldiers to] cut you into pieces, and to cause your houses to become only piles of stones!
Der König antwortete und sprach zu den Chaldäern: Mein Entschluß sei euch hiermit kund: Wenn ihr mir nicht den Traum und seine Deutung zu sagen wißt, werdet ihr in Stücke zerhauen, und werden eure Häuser in Misthaufen verwandelt.
6 But if you tell me what I dreamed and what it means, I will reward you. I will give you wonderful gifts and greatly honor you. So tell me what I dreamed and what it means!”
Wenn ihr mir aber den Traum und seine Deutung kundzuthun wißt, werdet ihr mancherlei Geschenke und reiche Ehre von mir empfangen. Thut mir also nun den Traum und seine Deutung kund!
7 But again they said, “Tell us what you dreamed, and [then] we will tell you what it means.”
Da antworteten sie abermals und sprachen: Der König möge nur seinen Knechten den Traum erzählen, dann werden wir sagen, was er bedeutet.
8 The king replied, “I know that you are just trying to get more time, because you know that I will do to you what I said that I would do.
Der König entgegnete und sprach: Ich weiß nun sicher, daß ihr nur Zeit zu gewinnen sucht, da ihr merkt, daß mein Entschluß euch kundgegeben ist.
9 If you do not tell me what I dreamed, you will be punished. [I think that] you have all agreed to tell me lies and [other] wicked things, because you hope that I will change ([my mind/what I am thinking]). But tell me the dream, and [then] I will know that you can [also] tell me what it means.”
Denn wenn ihr mir den Traum nicht anzugeben wißt, so bleibt es bei dem Urteilsspruch über euch, da ihr euch nur verabredet habt, mich zu belügen und zu betrügen, bis die Zeiten sich ändern. Darum sagt mir den Traum, damit ich erkenne, daß ihr mir auch zu sagen wißt, was er bedeutet.
10 The men who studied the stars replied, “There is no one on the earth who can do what you ask! There is no king, [even] a great and mighty king, who has [ever] asked his men who work magic or his fortune-tellers or men who study the stars to do something like that!
Da antworteten die Chaldäer dem König und sprachen: es giebt niemanden auf Erden, der die vom Könige gewünschte Auskunft geben könnte, wie denn niemals irgend ein großer und mächtiger König etwas dergleichen von irgend einem Zauberer oder Wahrsager oder Chaldäer verlangt hat.
11 What you are asking [us to do] is impossible. Only the gods can tell you what you dreamed, and they do not live among us!”
Die Sache, die der König verlangt, ist schwierig, da es niemanden anders giebt, der dem König Auskunft darüber erteilen könnte, als die Götter; die aber wohnen nicht bei den sterblichen Menschen!
12 The king was very angry when he heard that, so he commanded [his soldiers] that they execute all such wise men in Babylon.
Darob wurde der König so sehr aufgebracht und erbost, daß er den Befehl gab, alle Weisen Babels hinzurichten.
13 And because of what the king commanded, they sent some men to find me and my [three] friends, to execute us [also].
Als nun der Befehl erlassen war, die Weisen umzubringen, suchte man auch Daniel und seine Gefährten, um sie zu töten.
14 Arioch, the commander of the king’s guards, came to kill us. But I spoke to him very wisely and tactfully/skillfully.
Da wandte sich Daniel in kluger und verständiger Weise an Arjoch, den Obersten der königlichen Leibwache, der ausgezogen war, um die Weisen Babels zu töten.
15 I asked Arioch, “Why has the king made such a harsh/terrible decree?” So Arioch told me all that had happened [because of the king’s dream].
Er hob an und sprach zu dem königlichen Befehlshaber Arjoch: Weshalb ist dieser strenge Befehl vom König erlassen? Als darauf Arjoch Daniel den Sachverhalt mitgeteilt hatte,
16 I [immediately] went to talk to the king and requested that the king give me some time, so that I could find out [what the dream was and] what the dream meant.
begab sich Daniel zum König und bat ihn, ihm Zeit zu gewähren, da er alsdann dem Könige die Deutung geben werde.
17 Then I went home, and I told my friends, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, what had happened.
Darauf begab sich Daniel in seine Wohnung teilte seinen Gefährten Hananja, Misael und Asarja die Sache mit
18 I urged them to ask God, who lives/rules in heaven, to have mercy on us by telling us the secret [meaning of what the king dreamed], in order that we and the other wise men in Babylon would not be executed.
und wies sie an, bei dem Gott des Himmels in betreff dieses Geheimnisses um Erbarmen zu flehen, damit nicht Daniel und seine Gefährten mit den übrigen Weisen Babels hingerichtet würden.
19 And that night [God] gave to me a vision in which he revealed the secret. Then I praised God,
Daniel aber wurde sodann im Nachtgesichte das Geheimnis enthüllt. Da pries Daniel den Gott des Himmels.
20 saying, “We should praise God [MTY] forever, because [only] he truly is wise and powerful.
Daniel hob an und sprach: Gepriesen sei der Name Gottes von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit; denn sein ist die Weisheit und die Kraft.
21 He determines what events will happen through the years. He removes [some] kings and gives their authority to [new] kings. He is the one who causes people to become wise and enables those who study to understand [many] things.
Er führt den Wechsel der Zeiten und Stunden herbei, stürzt Könige und setzt Könige ein. Er verleiht den Weisen die Weisheit und den Einsichtigen die Erkenntnis.
22 He reveals things that are very mysterious; he is surrounded by light, but he knows things that are hidden [as though they were] in the darkness.
Er enthüllt die tiefsten und verborgensten Geheimnisse, weiß, was in der Finsternis geschieht, und das Licht wohnt bei ihm.
23 God, whom my ancestors [worshiped], I thank you and I praise you, because you have caused me to be wise and made me strong. You have told me what my friends and I asked you to tell us; and you have revealed to us what the king demanded to know.”
Ich danke dir, Gott meiner Väter, und preise dich, daß du mir die Weisheit und die Kraft verliehen hast und mich auch jetzt hast wissen lassen, was wir von dir erflehen; denn was der König zu erfahren verlangte, hast du uns offenbart.
24 Then I went to Arioch, the man whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men in Babylon. I said to him, “Do not kill those wise men. Take me to the king, and I will tell him what his dream means.”
Demgemäß begab sich Daniel zu Arjoch, dem der König aufgetragen hatte, die Weisen Babels hinzurichten, und sprach zu ihm also: Richte die Weisen Babels nicht hin! Führe mich hinein vor den König, so will ich dem Könige die Deutung geben.
25 So Arioch quickly took me to the king. He said to the king, “I have found [this man], one of the men whom we brought from Judah who [says he can] can tell you what your dream means!”
Da führte Arjoch Daniel eiligst hinein vor den König und sprach zu ihm also: Ich habe unter den aus der Heimat weggeführten Juden einen Mann gefunden, der dem Könige die Deutung geben will.
26 The king said to me, whose [new] name was Belteshazzar, “[Is this true]? Can you tell me what I dreamed and what it means?”
Der König hob an und sprach zu Daniel, der den Namen Beltsazar bekommen hatte: Bist du wirklich imstande, mir zu sagen, welchen Traum ich hatte, und was er bedeutet?
27 I replied, “There are no wise men or fortune-tellers or men who work magic or men who work sorcery who can tell such things to you.
Daniel hob vor dem König an und sprach: Das Geheimnis, welches der König zu wissen wünscht, vermöchte kein Weiser, Wahrsager, Zauberer und Sterndeuter dem Könige kundzuthun;
28 But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets. And he has shown in [your dream] what will happen in the future. Now I will tell you what you dreamed, the vision you saw [as you were lying] on your bed.
aber es giebt einen Gott im Himmel, der Geheimnisse enthüllt, und er hat dem Könige Nebukadnezar zu wissen gethan, was in der Endzeit geschehen wird. Mit deinem Traum und den Gesichten deines Hauptes, die du auf deinem Lager hattest, verhielt es sich so:
29 O King, while you were sleeping, you dreamed about events that will happen in the future. The one who reveals mysteries has shown you what is going to happen.
Dir, o König, stiegen auf deinem Lager Gedanken darüber auf, was hernach geschehen werde, und der, der die Geheimnisse enthüllt, hat dir zu wissen gethan, was geschehen wird.
30 And it is not because I am wiser than anyone else on earth that I know the meaning of this mysterious dream. It is because God wanted you to understand what you were thinking.
Mir aber ist dieses Geheimnis nicht infolge von Weisheit, die mir vor allen Lebenden zu eigen wäre, offenbart worden, sondern nur zu dem Zwecke, damit dem Könige die Deutung kund würde, und du über die Gedanken deines Inneren Auskunft erhieltest.
31 O King, [in your vision] you saw in front of you a huge and terrifying statue [of a man. It was] shining very brightly, and it was frightening and awesome.
O König, du schautest vor dich hin, da war vor deinen Augen ein gewaltiges Standbild. Dieses Bild war groß und sein Glanz außerordentlich; es stand vor dir, und sein Aussehen war furchtbar.
32 The head of the statue was [made] of pure gold. Its chest and arms [were made of] silver. Its belly and thighs [were made of] bronze.
Das Haupt dieses Bildes war von gediegenem Golde, seine Brust und seine Arme von Silber, sein Bauch und seine Lenden von Erz,
33 Its legs [were made of] iron, and its feet were a mixture of clay and iron.
seine Schenkel von Eisen, seine Füße teils von Eisen, teils von Thon.
34 As you watched, something cut a rock [from a mountain, but it was] not a human [who cut it]. The rock [tumbled down and] smashed the feet of the statue, feet [that were made of] iron and clay. It smashed them to bits.
Du schautest hin, da riß sich auf einmal ohne Zuthun von Menschenhand ein Stein los, traf das Bild auf seine teils eisernen und teils thönernen Füße und zertrümmerte sie.
35 Then the rest of the statue collapsed into a big heap of iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold. The pieces of the statue were as small as bits of chaff on the ground where it is threshed, and the wind blew away all the tiny pieces. There was nothing left. But the rock that smashed the statue became a large mountain that covered the whole earth.
Da zerstoben mit einem Male Eisen, Thon, Erz, Silber und Gold und flogen davon wie die Spreu im Sommer von den Tennen, und der Wind trug sie fort, so daß keine Spur mehr von ihnen zu finden war. Der Stein aber, der das Bild zerschlagen hatte, wurde zu einem großen Berg und füllte die ganze Erde aus.
36 That was what you dreamed. Now I will tell you what it means.
Das ist der Traum, und was er bedeutet, werden wir sofort dem Könige darlegen:
37 You are a king [who rules] over [many other] kings. The God who rules in heaven has caused you to rule over them and has given you great power [DOU] and has honored you.
Du, o König, du König der Könige, dem der Gott des Himmels die königliche Herrschaft, die Macht, die Stärke und Ehre verliehen hat,
38 He has caused you to be the ruler over all people, and [even] the animals and birds are controlled by you. [So] the head [of the statue] represents you.
in dessen Gewalt er überall, wo immer sie wohnen, die Menschen, die Tiere auf dem Felde und die Vögel unter dem Himmel gegeben und den er über sie alle zum Herrscher gemacht hat: du bist das goldene Haupt.
39 But after your [kingdom/rule] ends, there will be another [great] kingdom, [but it] will not be as great as yours. [The silver parts of the statue represent that kingdom]. Then there will be a third [great] kingdom [whose king] will rule over the whole earth. The bronze parts [of the statue represent] that kingdom.
Nach dir aber wird ein anderes Reich, das geringer ist als das deinige, entstehen, und nach ihm ein anderes drittes Reich, das ehern ist und dessen Herrschaft sich über die ganze Erde erstrecken wird.
40 After that kingdom ends, there will be a fourth [great] kingdom. The iron [parts of the statue represent that kingdom]. [The army of] that kingdom will smash the previous kingdoms, just like iron smashes everything that it strikes.
Dann aber wird ein viertes Reich stark wie Eisen aufkommen; dem entsprechend, daß Eisen alles zertrümmert und in Stücke schlägt, wird es wie Eisen, welches zerschmettert, alle jene Reiche zertrümmern und zerschmettern.
41 The feet and toes of the statue that you saw, that were a mixture of iron and clay, indicate that the kingdom they represent will [later] be divided.
Und daß die Füße und die Zehen, wie du sahst, teils aus Töpferthon, teils aus Eisen bestanden, bedeutet: es wird kein zusammenhaltendes Reich sein; immerhin wird es auch von der Festigkeit des Eisens an sich tragen, dem entsprechend, daß du ja gesehen hast, wie Eisen mit der Thonerde vermischt war.
42 Some parts of that kingdom will be as strong as iron, but some parts will not remain together, just as iron and clay do not stick together.
Und daß die Zehen der Füße teils eisern, teils thönern waren, bedeutet: das Reich wird zum Teil stark und zum Teil zerbrechlich sein.
43 The mixture of iron and clay [in the statue] shows also that the rulers of those kingdoms that separate from each other will try to form alliances with each other as a result of members of the royal families of those kingdoms marrying each other. But that will not succeed, just as iron and clay do not stick together.
Daß aber das Eisen, wie du sahst, mit Thonerde gemischt war, bedeutet: trotz den Vermischungen durch Heiraten wird kein Zusammenhalt der einzelnen Teile zu stande kommen, wie sich ja auch Eisen mit Thon nicht vermischen läßt.
44 But while those kings are ruling, God who rules in heaven will establish a kingdom that will never end. No one will ever defeat its king. He will completely destroy all those kingdoms, but his kingdom will remain forever.
In der Zeit jener Könige aber wird der Gott des Himmels ein Reich aufrichten, das in Ewigkeit nicht zerstört wird, und sein Reich wird auf kein anderes Volk übergehen; es wird alle jene Reiche zertrümmern und ihnen ein Ende bereiten, selbst aber in Ewigkeit bestehen,
45 That is the meaning of the rock that something cut from the mountain, the rock that will crush to tiny bits the statue that is made of iron, bronze, silver, and gold. O king, the great God has shown you what will truly happen in the future. And you can trust [what I told you about] the meaning of the dream.”
wie du ja geschaut hast, daß sich vom Berge ein Stein ohne Zuthun von Menschenhand losriß und Eisen, Erz, Thon, Silber und Gold zertrümmerte. Ein großer Gott hat dem Könige kundgethan, was hernach geschehen wird, und der Traum ist wahr und seine Deutung zuverlässig.
46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar prostrated himself in front of me [in great respect]. He commanded [his people] that they burn incense and burn an offering of grain to honor me.
Da warf sich der König Nebukadnezar nieder auf sein Angesicht, verneigte sich tief vor Daniel und befahl, ihm Opfer und wohlriechende Spenden darzubringen.
47 The king said to me, “[Your God has enabled] you to tell me the meaning of this dream/mystery, so now I truly know that your God is greater than all the other gods and all other kings. He reveals [to people] things that they cannot know.”
Der König hob an zu Daniel und sprach: Es ist Wahrheit, daß euer Gott der Gott der Götter und der Herr der Könige ist und daß er Geheimnisse offenbaren kann, denn du hast dies Geheimnis zu enthüllen vermocht.
48 Then the king gave many gifts to me, and he [also] appointed me to rule over the entire province of Babylon, and [also] to be the boss of all his wise men.
Sodann erwies der König Daniel hohe Ehre; er machte ihm sehr viele und reiche Geschenke, übertrug ihm die Herrschaft über die ganze Provinz Babel und bestellte ihn zum obersten Befehlshaber über alle Weisen Babels.
49 I asked the king to appoint Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to [also] have important positions in Babylon province, and the king did what I asked him to do. But [I did my work while] I stayed at the king’s palace.
Und auf die Bitte Daniels übertrug der König Sadrach, Mesach und Abed-Nego die Verwaltung der Provinz Babel; Daniel selbst aber blieb am königlichen Hofe.
