Genesis 24
1 Now, Abraham, was old, far gone in days, —and, Yahweh, had blessed Abraham, in all things.
Abraham var nu gammel og langt ute i årene, og Herren hadde velsignet Abraham i alle ting.
2 So Abraham said unto his servant, elder of his house, ruler of all that he had, —Place, I pray thee thy hand under my thigh;
Da sa Abraham til sin tjener, han som var den eldste i hans hus og rådet over alt det han hadde: Kjære, legg din hånd under min lend,
3 that I may put thee on oath, by Yahweh God of the heavens and God of the earth—That thou wilt not take a wife for my son, from among the daughters of the Canaanites in the midst of whom, I, am dwelling:
så vil jeg la dig sverge ved Herren, himmelens Gud og jordens Gud, at du ikke skal la min sønn ta sig en hustru av døtrene til kana'anitterfolket, som jeg bor iblandt,
4 but unto my own land and unto my own kindred, wilt go, —So shalt thou take a wife for my son—for Isaac.
men du skal dra til mitt eget land og til min slekt og hente en hustru til min sønn Isak.
5 And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman may not be willing to follow me into this land, —May I take back thy son, into the land from whence thou camest?
Tjeneren sa til ham: Men om nu kvinnen ikke vil følge mig hit til dette land, skal jeg da føre din sønn tilbake til det land som du er kommet fra?
6 And Abraham said unto him, —Beware that thou do not take back my son thither!
Abraham svarte: Vokt dig for å føre min sønn tilbake dit!
7 Yahweh, God of the heavens, and God of the earth, who took me out of the house of my father, and out of the land of my kindred, and, who spake to me, and who sware to me, saying, To thy seed, will I give this land, he, will send his messenger before thee, so shalt thou take a wife for my son from thence.
Herren, himmelens Gud, som førte mig bort fra min fars hus og fra mitt fedreland, og som talte til mig, og som svor mig til og sa: Din ætt vil jeg gi dette land, han skal sende sin engel foran dig, så du kan hente en hustru til min sønn derfra.
8 But if unwilling be the woman to follow thee, then shalt thou be clear from this mine oath, —Only my son, shalt thou not take back thither
Men dersom kvinnen ikke vil følge dig, da skal du være løst fra denne din ed til mig; bare du ikke fører min sønn tilbake dit!
9 So the servant placed his hand, under the thigh of Abraham, his lord, —and sware to him, over this thing.
Da la tjeneren sin hånd under Abrahams, sin herres lend og lovte ham dette med ed.
10 Then took the servant ten camels, from among the camels of his lord, and went his way, —all the goods of his master being in his hand, —so be mounted, and went his way unto Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.
Så tok tjeneren ti kameler av dem som hørte hans herre til, og drog avsted, og han hadde med sig alleslags kostelige ting som hørte hans herre til; han tok avsted og drog til Mesopotamia, til Nakors by.
11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city, against the well of water, —at the time of evening, at the time of the coming forth of the women that drew water,
Og han lot kamelene legge sig utenfor byen ved brønnen ved aftenstid, den tid da kvinnene pleier å komme ut og hente vann.
12 Then he said, O Yahweh, God of my lord Abraham! I pray thee cause it to fall out before me today, that thou deal in lovingkindness with my lord Abraham.
Og han sa: Herre, min herre Abrahams Gud! La det lykkes for mig idag, og gjør miskunnhet mot min herre Abraham!
13 Here am, I, stationed by the fountain of water, —and, the daughters of the men of the city, are coming forth to draw water:
Se, nu står jeg her ved denne kilde mens døtrene til mennene i byen kommer ut for å hente vann.
14 so it shall come to pass that the young woman unto whom I shall say. Let down pray. thy pitcher that I may drink, and she shall say, Drink, and to thy camels also, will I give to drink, that, her! hast thou appointed for thy servant for Isaac, And, hereby, shall I get to know, that thou hast dealt in lovingkindness with my lord!
La det nu bli så at den pike som jeg sier således til: Hell på din krukke, så jeg kan få drikke, og som da sier: Drikk, og jeg vil også gi dine kameler å drikke - at hun er den du har utsett for din tjener Isak, og av det vil jeg skjønne at du har gjort miskunnhet mot min herre.
15 And it came to pass, ere yet, he, had done speaking, that lo! Rebekah, was coming forth who had been born to Bethuel son of Milcah, wife of Nahor, brother of Abraham, —with her pitcher upon her shoulder,
Og se, før han hadde holdt op å tale, hendte det at Rebekka, en datter av Betuel, som var sønn til Milka og Nakor, Abrahams bror, kom ut med sin krukke på skulderen.
16 Now the young woman! was of very pleasing appearance, a virgin whom, no man, had known, —and she went down unto the fountain, and filled her pitcher and came up.
Det var en meget vakker pike, en jomfru, som ingen mann var kommet nær. Hun gikk ned til kilden og fylte sin krukke og steg op igjen.
17 And the servant ran to meet her, —and said, I pray thee let me drink a little water out of thy pitcher.
Da løp tjeneren henne i møte og sa: Kjære, la mig få drikke litt vann av din krukke!
18 And she said, Drink my lord, —And she hastened and lowered her pitcher on her hand and let him drink.
Og hun sa: Drikk, herre! Og hun skyndte sig og tok krukken ned i sin hånd og lot ham få drikke.
19 And when she had done giving him drink, —she said For thy camels also, will I draw, until they have done drinking.
Og da hun hadde latt ham drikke så meget han vilde, sa hun: Jeg vil også hente vann til dine kameler, til de har fått nok.
20 So she hastened and emptied her pitcher into the drinking-trough, and ran again unto the well, to draw, —and she drew for all his camels.
Og hun skyndte sig og tømte sin krukke i vanntrauet og løp atter til brønnen efter vann og lot alle hans kameler få drikke.
21 Now the man, was eagerly watching her, —keeping silence to see—whether Yahweh had prospered his way., or not.
Og mannen så på henne og undret sig, men tidde stille for å få vite om Herren hadde latt hans reise lykkes eller ikke.
22 And it came to pass when the camels had done drinking, that the man took a ring of gold, half a shekel its weight, —and two bracelets for her hands, ten of gold their weight;
Da så kamelene hadde drukket, tok mannen en gullring som veide en halv sekel, og to armbånd som veide ti sekel gull, og la dem om hennes armer.
23 and said Whose daughter art, thou? I pray thee, tell me. Is there in the house of thy father a place for us to tarry the night?
Og han sa: Hvem er du datter til? Kjære, si mig det! Er det rum nok i din fars hus, sa vi kan overnatte der.
24 And she said unto him, Daughter of Bethuel, am, I,—[Bethuel] son of Milcah whom she bare to Nahor.
Hun svarte: Jeg er datter til Betuel, som er sønn til Nakor og Milka.
25 And she said unto him, Both straw and fodder in plenty, have we, —also a place to tarry the night.
Så sa hun til ham: Det er fullt op både av halm og fôr hos oss, og det er også rum til å overnatte.
26 Then the man bowed his head, and bent himself down unto Yahweh;
Da bøide mannen sig ned og tilbad Herren
27 and said, Blessed be Yahweh. God of my lord Abraham, who hath not withdrawn his lovingkindness and his faithfulness, from my lord, —I—being in the way, Yahweh led me unto the house of the brethren of my lord!
og sa: Lovet være Herren, min herre Abrahams Gud, som ikke har tatt sin miskunn og sin trofasthet fra min herre! Herren har ført mig på rette vei til min herres frender.
28 And the young woman ran, and told the household of her mother, —according to these words.
Men piken sprang hjem til sin mor og fortalte alt dette.
29 Now, Rebekah, had a brother, whose name, was Laban, —so Laban ran unto the man outside, unto the fountain.
Rebekka hadde en bror, som hette Laban; han sprang ut til mannen der ute ved kilden.
30 And it came to pass, when he saw the ring, and the bracelets on the hands of his sister, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister saying, Thus, did the man speak unto me, that he came unto the man, and lo! he was standing by the camels near the fountain;
For da han så ringen og armbåndene som hans søster bar, og hørte sin søster Rebekka si: Således talte mannen til mig, gikk han ut til mannen, og se, der stod han hos kamelene ved kilden.
31 and he said, Come in. thou blessed of Yahweh, —Wherefore shouldst thou stand outside, when I have made ready the house and a place for the camels?
og han sa: Kom inn, du Herrens velsignede! Hvorfor står du her ute? Jeg har jo gjort huset i stand, og der er rum for kamelene.
32 So the man came in towards the house, and ungirded the camels, —and there was given him straw and fodder for the camels, and water for bathing his own feet and the feet of the men who were with him;
Så gikk mannen inn i huset og lesste av kamelene; og Laban gav kamelene halm og fôr og kom med vann til ham og de menn som var med ham, til å tvette føttene i.
33 and [food] was set before him to eat, But he said, I cannot eat, until I have spoken my words. And he said—Speak!
Og de satte frem mat for ham; men han sa: Jeg vil ikke ete før jeg har båret frem mitt ærend. Og Laban sa: Tal!
34 Then said he, —Servant of Abraham, am I.
Da sa han: Jeg er Abrahams tjener;
35 Now, Yahweh, having blessed my lord exceedingly, and made him great, —and given him flocks and herds and silver and gold, and men-servants and maid-servants, and camels, and asses,
og Herren har storlig velsignet min herre, så han er blitt rik, og han har gitt ham småfe og storfe og sølv og gull og træler og trælkvinner og kameler og asener.
36 then did Sarah wife of my lord, bear a son to my lord, after she had become old, —so he gave to him all that he had;
Og Sara, min herres hustru, fødte min herre en sønn på sine gamle dager; og ham har han gitt alt det han eier.
37 And my lord put me on oath saying, —Thou shalt not take a wife for my son, of the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land, I, am dwelling;
Og min herre lot mig sverge og sa: Du skal ikke la min sønn ta sig en hustru av døtrene til kana'anitterfolket, i hvis land jeg bor;
38 but, unto the house of my father, shalt thou go, and unto my family, —and take a wife for my son.
men du skal gå til min fars hus og til min slekt og hente en hustru til min sønn.
39 So I said unto my lord, —Peradventure the woman will not follow me.
Da sa jeg til min herre: Men om nu kvinnen ikke vil følge mig?
40 And he said unto me, —Yahweh, before whom I have walked to and fro, will send his messenger with thee, so shall he prosper thy way, and thou shalt take a wife for my son out of my kindred and out of the house of my father.
Men han sa til mig: Herren, for hvis åsyn jeg har vandret, skal sende sin engel med dig og la din reise lykkes, sa du finner en hustru til min sønn av min slekt og av min fars hus.
41 Then, shalt thou clear thyself from mine oath, for thou shalt go in unto my kindred, —and, if they will not grant her unto thee, then shalt thou be clear from mine oath.
Da skal du være løst fra din ed til mig, når du kommer til mitt folk; og vil de ikke gi dig henne, så er du også løst fra eden til mig.
42 So I came in to-day, unto the fountain, —and I said O Yahweh God of my lord Abraham! if, I pray thee thou art prospering my way whereon I am going,
Så kom jeg da idag til kilden, og jeg sa: Herre, min herre Abrahams Gud! Å, om du vilde la denne min reise lykkes!
43 here, am I stationed by the fountain of water, —so then it shall come to pass that, the maiden that is coming forth to draw, and I shall say unto her Let me drink. I pray thee a little water out of thy pitcher;
Se, nu står jeg her ved denne kilde; la det nu bli så at om en ung pike kommer ut for å hente vann, og jeg sier til henne: Kjære, la mig få litt vann av din krukke,
44 and she shall say unto me Both, thou, drink, and for thy camels also, will I draw, the same, shall be the woman whom Yahweh hath appointed for the son of my lord.
og hun da sier til mig: Drikk du, og jeg vil også hente vann til dine kameler - så er hun den kvinne som Herren har utsett for min herres sønn.
45 Ere yet, I, could make an end of speaking unto mine own heart, lo! then Rebekah, coming forth, with her pitcher on her shoulder, and she went down to the fountain, and drew, —and I said unto her Let me drink I pray thee!
Før jeg hadde holdt op å tale således ved mig selv, se, da kom Rebekka ut med sin krukke på skulderen, og hun gikk ned til kilden og øste op vann; da sa jeg til henne: Kjære, la mig få drikke!
46 So she hastened and lowered her pitcher from off her, and said. Drink! and to thy camels also, will I give to drink, —So I drank and the camels also, she let drink.
Og hun skyndte sig og tok sin krukke ned og sa: Drikk, og jeg vil også la dine kameler få drikke. Så drakk jeg, og hun lot også kamelene få drikke.
47 Then I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said Daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom, Milcah, bare to him, —Then put I the ring upon her nose, and the bracelets upon her hands;
Og jeg spurte henne: Hvem er du datter til? Hun svarte: Jeg er datter til Betuel, som er sønn til Nakor og Milka. Da satte jeg ringen i hennes nese og armbåndene på hennes armer.
48 and bowed my head and bent myself down unto Yahweh, —and I blessed Yahweh God of my lord Abraham, who had led me in a way of faithfulness, to take the daughter of the brother of my lord for his son.
Og jeg bøide mig ned og tilbad Herren, og jeg lovet Herren, min herre Abrahams Gud, som hadde ledet mig på rette vei til å finne min herres brordatter til hustru for hans sønn.
49 Now, therefore, if ye are dealing in lovingkindness and faithfulness with my lord, tell me, —and, if not, tell me, that I may turn unto the right hand or unto the left.
Dersom I nu vil vise godhet og trofasthet mot min herre, da si mig det, og hvis ikke, da si mig det, så jeg kan vende mig til en annen kant, til høire eller til venstre.
50 Then answered Laban and Bethuel and said, from Yahweh, hath come forth the word, —we cannot speak unto thee ill or well.
Da svarte Laban og Betuel og sa: Dette kommer fra Herren; vi kan intet si dig, hverken ondt eller godt.
51 Lo! Rebekah, is before thee, Take her and go thy way, —And let her become wife unto the son of thy lord, as Yahweh hath spoken.
Se, der står Rebekka; ta henne og dra bort og la din herres sønn få henne til hustru, som Herren har sagt!
52 And it came to pass when Abraham’s servant heard their words, that he bowed himself down towards the earth unto Yahweh.
Da Abrahams tjener hørte disse ord, bøide han sig til jorden for Herren.
53 Then the servant brought forth jewels of silver and jewels of gold and raiment, and gave unto Rebekah, —and precious things, gave he to her brother and to her mother.
Og tjeneren tok frem sølvsmykker og gullsmykker og klær og gav Rebekka; og hennes bror og hennes mor gav han også kostelige gaver.
54 And they did eat and drink he, and the men who were with him, and they tarried the night, —and when they arose in the morning, he said Let me go unto my lord!
Så åt de og drakk, han og de menn som var med ham, og de blev der om natten. Men da de stod op om morgenen, sa han: La mig nu fare hjem til min herre!
55 Then said her brother and her mother, Let the young woman remain with us some days or rather ten, —After that, she shall go.
Da sa hennes bror og hennes mor: La piken bli hos oss en tid, en ti dager eller så! Siden kan du reise.
56 And he said unto them, Do not hinder me, when, Yahweh, hath prospered my journey, —Let me go, that I may take my journey unto my lord!
Men han sa til dem: Hold mig ikke tilbake, nu da Herren har latt min reise lykkes! La mig få ta avsted, så jeg kan komme hjem til min herre!
57 Then said they, We must call the young woman and ask at her mouth.
Da sa de: La oss kalle på piken og spørre henne selv!
58 So they called Rebekah and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.
Så kalte de på Rebekka og sa til henne: Vil du reise med denne mann? Hun svarte: Ja, det vil jeg. -
59 So they let go Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant and his men.
Så lot de Rebekka, sin søster, og hennes fostermor og Abrahams tjener og hans menn reise.
60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, Our sister! become thou, thousands of ten thousands, —And let thy seed take possession of the gate of them that hate them!
Og de velsignet Rebekka og sa til henne: Vår søster, bli til tusen ganger ti tusen, og måtte din ætt ta sine fienders porter i eie!
61 Then mounted Rebekah and her young woman and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man, —so the servant took Rebekah. and went his way.
Og Rebekka og hennes piker gjorde sig ferdig, og de satte sig på kamelene og fulgte med mannen og tjeneren tok Rebekka med sig og drog avsted.
62 Now, Isaac, had come in at the entrance, of Beer-lahai-roi, —for, he, was dwelling in the land of the South:
Isak var nettop kommet tilbake fra en vandring til brønnen Lakai Ro'i; for han bodde i sydlandet.
63 and Isaac came forth to meditate in the field at the approach of evening, —so he lifted up his eyes and looked, and lo! camels, coming in.
Og Isak gikk ved aftenstid ut på marken for å ha en stille stund og da han så op, fikk han se nogen kameler som kom gående.
64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and saw Isaac, —so she alighted with haste from off the camel;
Og da Rebekka så op, fikk hun øie på Isak; og hun skyndte sig og steg ned av kamelen.
65 and said unto the servant, Who is this man that is walking in the field to meet us? And the servant said, That, is my lord. So she took the veil and covered herself.
Og hun sa til tjeneren: Hvem er denne mann som kommer oss i møte på marken? Tjeneren svarte Det er min herre. Så tok hun sløret og tilhyllet sig.
66 And the servant recounted to Isaac, —all the things which he had done.
Og tjeneren fortalte Isak alt det han hadde gjort.
67 And Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother; thus he took Rebekah and she became his wife and he loved her, —and Isaac consoled himself, for the loss of his mother.
Og Isak førte henne inn i sin mor Saras telt; han tok Rebekka hjem, og hun blev hans hustru, og han hadde henne kjær. Så blev Isak trøstet i sorgen over sin mor.
